Flash Memory .how it works.......
2008-06-02 07:52:00
Flash memories are solid state electronic devices with random access memory capabilities used for fast digital information storage. They are used in a wide range of applications, such as storing BIOS routines in typical digital computers, as medium capacity hard drives for digital cameras or as memory cards for laptop computers and video consoles. The technology used to manufacture flash memories is based on EEPROM (electrically erasable programmable read-only memory) chips, which consist of memory banks formed of storing cells disposed in a grid of columns and rows. A basic storing cell has two MOS-FET transistors at each intersection, and are separated by an oxide layer. The two transistors are known as the floating gate and the control gate. When the floating gate is connected to the row, the cell stores a '1' logic bit. The value changes to '0' logic through a process known as the Fowler-Nordheim tunneling, which alters the distribution of electrons inside the floating gate. W...

5 Megapixel Motorola Slider Leaked
2008-06-02 07:46:00
A brand new Motorola handset has been recently spotted on the Web, and it seems that this is another phone made by Moto in collaboration with Kodak. The first Moto-Kodak device is the ZN5, which was seen in real and clear photos about one month ago. And while we knowalmost all there is to know about ZN5, the new Motorola handset is still a mystery when it comes to its name and its full list of features.Appeared over at Boy Genius Report, the new and unnamed yet Motorola is a slider phone, unlike the ZN5 which comes in a candybar form factor. Anyway, the slider has a 5 Megapixel camera (like the ZN5) with flash and video, but no auto focus (apparently). Now,this wouldn't be the first photo camera without auto focus, but it's among the few 5 Megapixel ones to lack this feature. Then again, the new phone can only be a prototype, and when Moto is releasing the final version of it, auto focus might also be included. But these are just speculations, and until something official comes ou...

Google expanding core search capabilities
2008-05-31 19:55:00
The expansion of Google 's core search capabilities into applications such as cross-language information retrieval and book-searching were detailed by a company official Thursday who also predicted more personalization for searching.During a keynote presentation at the Google I/O conference in San Francisco, Marissa Mayer, Google vice president for search products and user experience, said search would be expanded in devices such as phones and cars; search results also will include new media types."You'll see things like videos, images, graphs," stitched together as a holistic answer to a query, she said.Personalization, Mayer said, might include knowing where users are and knowing what they have searched on previously. She listed a roster of different Google projects, some in beta stage. Mayer cited Google Translate, a service now in beta that can perform translations across languages."If the answer exists in any language, we can find it," Mayer said.Google is delving into book sea...

Seagate to offer solid-state drives next year
2008-05-31 19:53:00
Seagate will introduce its first SSD (solid-state drive) storage and 2TB hard drive next year, company CEO Bill Watkins said. The company's first SSD product will be targeted at enterprises that need speedy storage and can afford to pay a premium for the expensive drives. Seagate has no plans to release SSD drives for consumers as the high prices could deter them for the next few years, Watkins said in an interview. The release date and price information for the 2TB hard drive were not available. Seagate released 1TB hard drives, the Barracuda 7200.11 and Barracuda ES.2, in the middle of 2007.While there is no competition now between hard drives and SSDs, Seagate is thinking of going to SSDs in the long term to replace hard drives."SSDs are not price-competitive yet," Watkins said. The storage market is driven by cost per gigabyte, and though SSDs provide benefits such as power savings, they won't be in laptops in the next few years, Watkins said. Low-power consumption capabilities ...

Asus Eee PC 900 Ultra Mobile PC
2008-05-31 08:29:00
Soon after we began posting images and information regarding the original Asus Eee PC from the Computex show in Taipei in June of last year, we knew Asus had a hot product on their hands. In fact, our initial hands-on preview of the Eee PC was so popular, it has actually been one of the most heavily trafficked articles we've ever posted here on HotHardware. The combination of the Eee PC's ultra small form factor, features, and affordable price made it attractive to such a broad range of technology consumers, that readers from around the globe poured in to check out Asus' slick, Linux-based, mini-machine.A few months later, we followed up with our . By the time early Eee PCs were ready for the retail market, Asus had morphed the machine from a competitor of the OLPC XO to a UMPC for the masses. In the move, pricing increased from initial reports, but that didn't stop the Eee PC from being wildly popular. The Eee PC was still priced low enough to allow budget conscious consu...

S3 launches Chrome 440 GTX graphics processor
2008-05-31 08:26:00
Just over two months after introducing the first Chrome 400-series graphics card, S3 has added a new, faster variant to its lineup. From the outside, the new Chrome 440 GTX doesn't look very different from the Chrome 430 GT, with the same low-profile design and cooler. The two cards' GPUs are both 65nm, DirectX 10.1-capable parts with the ability to decode 1080p Blu-ray video. However, S3 has outfitted the Chrome 440 GTX with GDDR3 RAM, and it claims the new card offers higher overall performance than the DDR2-powered 430 GT. A chart on its website shows the newcomer yielding a 15% greater score than AMD's Radeon HD 3470 in 3DMark06 onWindows Vista. For reference, S3 claims its Chrome 430 GT outperforms the slower Radeon HD 3450 by 20% or so in the same benchmark.S3 has opted to price the Chrome 440 GTX at only $69, making it just $10 pricier than the 430 GT. That's also about $10 more expensive than the Radeon HD 3470, a Sapphire-built version of which can be had for $59.99 on N...

VIA announces Nano processor
2008-05-30 08:44:00
Watch out, Intel: there's a new kid in the low-power, low-cost processor arena that could very well give Atom some stiff competition. VIA formally introduced its Isaiah processor earlier this morning, christening it Nano and forecasting the arrival of derived systems in the third quarter of this year.Nano has a superscalar 64-bit architecture with speculative, out-of-order execution, much like Intel's Core 2 chips (but unlike Atom, which has simper in-order execution). Each Nano CPU also has SSE instruction support, two 64KB L1 caches, a 16-way associative 1MB L2 cache, an 800MHz front-side bus, and a wealth of on-die cryptographic acceleration and security features.Of course, power is the name of the game in this market, so VIAdesigned Nano to be power-efficient from the start. The company's new baby is based on 65nm process technology, supports a C6 sleep state, and features "new circuit techniques and mechanisms for managing the die temperature, reducing power draw and improvi...

Far Cry 2 Hands-on Preview
2008-05-29 08:30:00
With a development team that had nothing to do with the original Far Cry, and the only link between the two being Ubisoft's ownership of the trademark, Far Cry 2 may sound like a dull cash-in. But judging by Shacknews' preview, the game actually has much to offer.Shacknews' Nick Breckon got a chance to test Far Cry 2 first-hand, and he paints a tantalizing description of a huge, vivid game that lets players explore and mold the course of the story to their whims. Far Cry 2 features a 19-square-mile (50-km˛) game world, a"branching mission-based plot," warring factions, wildlife, and a fancy graphics engine with real-time radiosity rendering and destructible vegetation. Ubisoft is developing the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC versions simultaneously, though, so it hasn't been quite as indulgent on the graphics front as Crytek was with Crysis.Breckon sums up his impression of the Far Cry 2 experience in one word: variety. "It's a full menu of a game, a long list of cool features...

Performance of Dell XPS 730 H2C Gaming System
2008-05-29 08:25:00
Dell's XPS branded products have come a long way since they first appeared in 1993. Starting life as a performance trim for the Dimension product line, Dell has nurtured XPS into a well-known and respected premium performance brand. While not all XPS branded products are specifically targeted at gamers, gaming has always been at the core of the product line-up. The XPS brand's flagship desktop and notebook products have always been heavily gaming oriented, but it looks like that is set to change. The XPS 730 is Dell's latest XPS flagship desktop product, the fourth generation of the XPS 700 series, and it may be the last. Or at least the last XPS flagship product as we currently know them; large, aggressively styled behemoths sporting the latest hardware and adorned with colorful LED lighting. A week after the XPS 730 was launched, news regarding the demise of XPS as a gaming brand began to circulate. Since its acquisition of Alienware in the summer of 2006, Dell has effectively b...
