Obama widens Virginia poll lead over McCain
2008-10-02 17:50:00
The latest Virginia state poll of the presidential race shows Barack Obama widening his lead over John McCain. Obama leads McCain by a 53-44% count among likely Virginia voters in a CNN/Time poll, a nine-point margin outside of the margin of error.Obama's advantage is also now reflected on InTrade where he's given a 59% probability of winning the state and a 67% chance of winning the election nationally as a whole. The Virginia poll was taken after the initial U.S. House failure of the bailout package, heightening the importance of the economy where Obama holds his greatest advantage. If the election cycle remains almost solely focused on the economy, no strategy will change the eventual outcome of an Obama national win. McCain needs the election to focus on something else, anything else between now and Election Day to have any chance at all._____________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _______________________...

Congress approves Metro long-term federal funding
2008-10-02 15:05:00
The U.S. Senate approved a bill late Wednesday that authorizes up to $1.5 billion over a ten year period to maintain basic maintenance of the Metro subway and bus system. The U.S. House had earlier approved the bill that includes the Metro funding, wrapped in an omnibus rail safety package. President Bush is expected to formally sign the measure.Federal funding for Metro will be contingent on the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia each dedicating $50 million per year for Metro. D.C. and Maryland have no problems providing such funds but the authorization for Virginia support has become wrapped up in the state's ongoing transportation dispute. The Washington Post notes though that Virginia is required by state law to match federal transport money.Continued funding for Metro is an obvious essential for the effective daily transport of the local federal workforce so there was a legitimate interest in federal funding of the system. The efforts of local congressmen especially t...

New bailout / rescue bill passes Senate with full area support
2008-10-02 12:41:00
A modified version of the $700 billion bailout / rescue package passed the U.S. Senate Wednesday night with full support of area senators. Barbara Mikulski (D) & Ben Cardin (D) from Maryland and John Warner (R) & Jim Webb (D) from Virginia all voted in favor of the compromise measure which passed by a 74-25 mark. To their credit, majorities of both Democrats and Republicans voted in support.Among the modifications between the Senate bill and the recently failed House one were an increase in the FDIC insurance on bank deposits to $250,000 and an extended array of business tax reductions and pork spending add-ons.The Senate measure will now go back to the House where it's hoped that the Republicans who may be more inclined to support this new version will more than offset the Democrats who may be more inclined to oppose it. However imperfect this new bill may be, it needs to be passed quickly before the credit crunch becomes a credit chokeout.Washington Post, AP via WTOP/103.5_______...

Maryland, Navy football score road upsets over top 25 teams
2008-09-30 16:26:00
Saturday, September 27 became a memorable day for road upsets in local college football as the Maryland Terrapins took down #20 ranked Clemson, 20-17, while the Navy Midshipmen followed with an even more stunning win over #16 ranked Wake Forest, 24-17.Maryland's win was propelled by Darrius Heyward-Bey who made a 76-yard run during one touchdown drive and made the score outright on a second drive to key the second-half comeback effort. Clemson's first-half offensive dominance was largely shuttered in half two. At 4-1 with a game at hapless Virginia next, Maryland is now primed to reach to make a run in the wide open ACC title chase.By contrast, the Navy Midshipmen scored their upset win based largely on their first half effort, triggering five turnovers against the plagued Wake Forest squad. Eric Kettani ran for 175 yards total as Navy held on for the win. With a 3-2 mark and a schedule to eventually get easier, the Mids should now be favored to gain the six wins needed for D.C.'...

Washington Redskins stun the world, upset Dallas 26-24
2008-09-30 15:41:00
On a weekend of local football upsets, the Washington Redskins scored the most celebrated one of all, stunning the Dallas Cowboys by a 26-24 count. The upset win marked the Redskins' third straight victory under head coach Jim Zorn and its most remarkable one, coming in at over 11 point underdogs. In large measure, Washington's resurgence has come about through the awakening of quarterback Jason Campbell. After a disturbing end to the postseason, Campbell has shined, going 20 for 31 with two touchdown passes at the Cowboys. Zorn's West Coast offense still left room for a running attack with Clinton Portis getting 121 yards. The Skins attack was also remarkably disciplined, not giving up a turnover for the fourth straight game.On the other side, the Redskins defense held Dallas' rushing game to 44 yards, while qb Tony Romo generated impressive statistics only during a last-ditch comeback effort that fell short. The only major lowlight was the absence of defensive end Jason Taylor ...

Most D.C. area congressmen supported bailout bill
2008-09-30 12:04:00
Despite reservations, most Washington, D.C. area representatives generally voted in favor of the $700 billion banking bailout bill that fell to defeat Monday in the U.S. House. Unlike a certain House speaker, Majority Leader Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md. 5th) gave a stirring closing speech in favor of the measure, invoking the names of prominent Democratic and Republican supporters alike in his bipartisan appeal for the bill. The notable exception to the affirmative trend was freshman Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md. 4th) who pivoted to the far left in helping vote down the measure. In her opposition statement, Edwards cited what she considered a lack of new financial regulations and protections for her constituents. While her "no" vote will prove popular in the 4th district short-term, her judgment is the classic case of making the perfect to be the enemy of the good. The drying of the credit markets that seems inevitable without the bill's passage would benefit no one in the Maryland 4th distr...

Remains of two children found in Calvert County residence
2008-09-30 00:28:00
A Calvert County , Maryland woman told investigators in a child abuse case that the remains of two adopted girls were in a drop-in freezer in the basement of her home. Renee Bowman of Lusby, Md. was charged with child abuse in the beating of a third adopted daughter. According to a Calvert County sheriff's office press release, the investigation of Bowman was triggered after her seven year old adopted daughter escaped from a locked bedroom. Bowman subsequently confessed to beating the one adopted daughter and the storage of the other two children's remains for seven months since her move from Rockville. Any charges for the deaths of the other two children would likely come out of Montgomery County, notes the Washington Post. The freezer has been transported in whole to Baltimore for state forensic examination. The three children were adopted by Renee Bowman out of the District of Columbia. City officials have claimed that all proper procedures were followed but the Bowman tragedy i...

Washington Redskins face long odds in Dallas showdown
2008-09-28 19:54:00
Despite running off two straight wins in hard-fought fashion, the Washington Redskins face long odds in week four's encounter at the Dallas Cowboys. The NFC East leaders have run off three straight dominant wins to become the consensus best NFL team to date, standing as 11 point favorites against Washington in Texas Stadium.Aside from the Redskins facing the prospect of a seemingly unbeatable dvision foe, they also have to make the adjustments to cope with star defensive end Jason Taylor. The former Miami Dolphins superstar was lost by injury for an indeterminate length of time, ending his consecutive game streak in the process. Not to repeat the obvious but Washington will need to place at its best to have any realistic hope of a late afternoon win. Start time is 4:15 p.m. EDT on WTTG/FOX/5 & WTEM/980 radio.___________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ __________________...

Maryland football faces road test in ACC opener
2008-09-27 14:44:00
The Maryland Terrapins face their most difficult test of the college football season to date, traveling to Death Valley for their ACC conference opener at the #20 nationally ranked Clemson Tigers. Maryland comes into conference play with a 3-1 record, having been upset at Middle Tennessee State but subsequently scoring an upset against California. Clemson will be a more difficult test than either one of those teams, rallying for three straight blowout wins after an opening loss. The Terrapins' chances should improve though, assuming running back Da'Rel Scott can make his expected return to action. (12 p.m., WDCA/20, WJFK/106.7)Semi-local powers Virginia Tech and Navy also face long odds in away battles this weekend. The Virginia Tech Hokies faces undefeated Big 12 power Nebraska before what should be a rabid campus crowd. (8 p.m., WJLA/ABC/7, WTEM/980) The Navy Midshipmen may face the most difficult task of all at national #16 Wake Forest (3:45 p.m., ESPNU, WTOP/1050). In other lo...

Stadium study positive on D.C. United in Prince George's County, Md.
2008-09-24 10:53:00
An economic impact study of a potential D.C. United -owned soccer specific stadium in Prince George's County , Maryland has yielded a positive result. The study commissioned by the Maryland Stadium Authority reported that a soccer stadium would yield over 1000 job equivalents and create up to $6 million in tax revenue to be shared by the state and county. The specific site of any potential new stadium, widely rumored to be New Carrollton or Greenbelt, was not factored into the study. The study assumes that more than 50 annual events would occur in the proposed stadium including D.C. United MLS pro matches, Washington Freedom women's pro matches, national team and tournament matches plus music concerts on a permanent stage incorporated into the stadium design. While the county executive branch seems tentatively in support of the stadium idea, two council members interviewed by the Post questioned the report assumptions. What this report should hopefully do is jump start the stadium sea...

Doug "Greaseman" Tracht death reports a likely hoax
2008-09-24 09:58:00
Claims made that radio disc jockey The Greaseman (a.k.a. Doug Tracht) is dead appear to now be false, the result of a deliberate hoax perpetuated by his current employer, DC101 (WWDC/101.1) radio. Speculation about The Greaseman's demise started with the posting of a YouTube remembrance tribute video with the text "Doug 'The Greaseman' Tracht, 1950-2008." An on-air announcement about Greaseman's "death" was made Tuesday evening over DC101 during the 5 p.m. hour followed by the playing of songs that Greaseman would have supposedly wanted.Since that point though, absolutely no media outlets have confirmed Doug Tracht's alleged demise. An e-mailer posted to the DCRTV metamedia site found no evidence of unusual activity around Tracht's house. More notably, a source has since posted to Southern Maryland Online that Tracht himself was successfully contacted by phone two hours after reports surfaced about him supposedly being deceased. While it isn't immediately clear yet if Doug Tr...

Obama, McCain near even in latest Virginia presidential polling
2008-09-23 15:11:00
Barack Obama maintains a small and statistically insignificant 49% to 46% advantage in the latest Washington Post/ABC News presidential race poll of Virginia residents, reports the Post. The result parallels the findings of other polling firms that have pushed Obama on top but with margins below the margin of error.McCain had established a more solid lead in the Virginia polling before last week's near collapse of the U.S. financial system forcibly brought attention back to Obama's strongest (and McCain's weakest) issue. America's regained economic focus gas also helped the Democratic nominee to reestablish a more solid lead in national polls over his Republican counterpart. This week's Virginia polls take on extra importance with the advent of early voting across the commonwealth. However ridiculous it may be for balloting to start before the first Obama/McCain debate is even held, its launch could well prove the deciding factor for Virginia's key electoral votes. ___________...

Navy football overcomes halftime deficit to defeat Rutgers
2008-09-21 17:03:00
In danger of falling to a 1-3 mark, the Navy Midshipmen overcame a 14-6 halftime deficit against Rutgers , kicking a late 4th quarter field goal and scoring a key interception to secure the 23-21 upset win. The Annapolis Capital noted that returned Navy quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada and fullback Eric Kettani led the final scoring drive in the game's closing minutes.Navy's triumph before an Annapolis sellout crowd kept Midshipmen hopes viable to reach the six wins needed for EagleBank Bowl eligibility. On a side political note, presidential candidate John McCain attended the first quarter of game action but didn't stick around to see the impressive Mid comeback. In other D.C. area game action, Virginia Tech scored a close cut 20-17 win at North Carolina, Maryland walloped Eastern Michigan by a 51-24 count, Howard gave up the first 51 points against Florida A&M en route to its own 51-24 loss, Georgetown was annihilated 47-7 at Yale and James Madison overcame a three touchdown ...

Washington Redskins face resurgent Arizona squad
2008-09-21 13:08:00
Coming out of week two with their first 2008 season victory in hand, the Washington Redskins are set to face a suddenly resurgent Arizona Cardinals squad. The Cardinals come in as an old Rams flashback squad, led by starting quarterback Kurt Warner en route to a 2-0 start. On the hometown side, the Redskins offense finally woke up in last Sunday's comeback over the New Orleans Saints. Jason Campbell showed the promise expected of him in the West Coast offense last week, especially in connections to Santana Moss. Combined with the expected impressive defensive outing, another strong Campbell performance should be enough for a second straight Washington win.Kickoff time is 1 p.m. Sunday on WTTG/FOX/5 & WTEM/980 radio.___________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ ________________________________...

Navy football faces virtual must win vs. Rutgers
2008-09-20 18:04:00
The Navy Midshipmen face a virtual must win college football game this weekend against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. While competitive throughout, Navy has been beset by injuries en route to a 1-2 mark, the one win coming against FCS team Towson. A loss this weekend would leave Navy at 1-3, in serious danger of not gaining the six wins needed for an EagleBank Bowl berth. The Midshipmen hope that the expected fulltime returns of qb Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada and fullback Eric Kettani will be enough to overcome a similarly reeling 0-2 Rutgers squad. On a side note, presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (and his Secret Service detail) are expected in attendance at Annapolis for the game. (3:30 p.m., CBSCS, WTOP/1050).Elsewhere, the Virginia Tech Hokies face a tough ACC test at undefeated North Carolina (3:30 p.m. WJLA/ABC/7, WTEM/980), the Maryland Terrapins hope to avoid the upset hosting Eastern Michigan (1 p.m., ESPN360, WJFK/106.7), the Georgetown Hoyas need a miracle at Yale (12:30...

D.C. Council passes gun measure in attempt to forestall Congress
2008-09-17 18:07:00
The D.C. Council passed a new gun control law on an emergency basis Tuesday in an attempt to forestall congressional intervention on the issue. The council's second emergency gun law allows the registration of most semiautomatic weapons and for gun owners to keep weapons loaded in their homes. It was the restrictions against such practices in the council's first emergency measure that prompted a new lawsuit and the threat of congressional action. Despite the council's belated work, an NRA-backed congressional measure to annihilate the District of Columbia's gun regulatory authority altogether is expected to pass the U.S. House with the support of Republicans and conservative Democrats. What the council's action may do is allow the U.S. Senate a desperately needed out against doing the same. What has become obvious in the months since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the original D.C. gun ban is the poor judgment of both national and local politicians. The D.C. Council begged f...

Abby Wambach leads allocation to new Washington Freedom
2008-09-17 13:07:00
Star forward Abby Wambach leads the group of three U.S. women's national team players allocated to the Washington Freedom pro franchise of the new Women's Professional Soocer (WPS) league. The striker played for the Freedom during its original run in the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) and will no doubt be welcomed back by the D.C. area's women's soccer fandom. Wambach missed the Olympics with a broken leg but expects to be fully recovered for her WPS debut. The two other allocations from the USA national team pool are long-time defender Cat Whitehill and local defender Ali Krieger who played for the Freedom's lower tier squad during the gap time without any full women's pro soccer league.Women's Professional Soccer will launch in 2009 with the Washington Freedom among the seven planned franchises. Unlike the WUSA days, WPS will be a financially downscaled operation with most Freedom home matches set for the less expensive Maryland SoccerPlex. Only three of ten home ...

2008-09-16 14:24:00
The Potomac Nationals won the Carolina League championship of class A+ minor league baseball last week, defeating the Myrtle Beach Pelicans three games to one. The title was the first one by a full season minor league affiliate of the Washington Nationals since the parent club arrived in D.C., giving some hope for the beleaguered organization. The title win was also the second consecutive Carolina League championship to be claimed by a D.C. area club. The Frederick Keys won the Mills Cup in 2007 but did not qualify for the league playoffs this go-round.Potomac clinched the title at their home field in Woodbridge, Va. off an 8-2 game four rout, establishing what tuned out to be the clinching runs in the first inning with a Dee Brown two-run homer. Potomac's toughest win turned to actually be its game three triumph, overcoming a three run deficit with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning for an 8-7 ten inning triumph._________________________________ _____________________________...

Campbell went 24 for 36 on the day with no interceptions, an almost complete turn from the opening week's anemic performance and even from the much shorter passing game under Gibbs last season.Further brighter notes included Clinton Portis rushing 96 yards on 21 carries and the still knee-braced Jason Taylor getting his first official sack with Washington.
