MHR University - The "Show Blitz" System
2008-06-08 16:43:00
Some time ago I wrote that I am guessing new Denver defensive coordinator uses one of two systems.  One is the "Zone Blitz "  system championed by defensive master mind Lebeau.  The other is the "Show Blitz", a system used by former Broncos coordinator Coyer. I tend to think we might go with one of these two systems because we have the right kind of personnel to run either, and because Coach Shanahan has stated he wants to return to Denver's style of defense.  Whether that means one of these systems, or whether he just means an aggressive system is hard to know. The Show Blitz system (spoken as if one is saying, "the team is showing blitz") is a fun system to watch for fans.  In a nutshell, the LBs and safeties creep up to the line of scrimmage on many downs and "show" a blitz is coming.  At the snap, most of the players either bring an overwhelming blitz, or drop back.  In most applications the players go back into zone, but in the Coyers system t...

Denver Broncos Team Camp Day 3 - News and Notes
2008-06-06 15:24:00
After taking Wednesday off, the Broncos got right back to work on Thursday.  As a sidenote, Mike Shanahan was a guest on Sirius NFL Radio yesterday talking about everything from Javon Walker/Travis Henry to Selvin Young to Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall.  Looking to find some audio for ya but it was an interesting 10 or so minutes.  Back to business..... There are several articles out now talking about the Broncos drive for better character. Of course, these negative piles of journalistic pizzle are taking shots at the Broncos "focus", implying that character only comes into the equation when teams are losing. If you'd like to focus on the stuff going on off the field you can do that HERE and HERE. For me, I am going to focus on the field. The Broncos have cut bait with alot of locker room-cancer guys in the past few months and I support it, even if the the perception is the talent level of the team has dropped. I don't agree, and feel it is the name recognit...

For his career, Elam owns just about every scoring record in Broncos History, including Games Played, Points Scored, Field Goals Made, Field Goals Attempted, Field Goal Percentage, Extra Points Made and Extra Points Attempted. Elam also earned League Honors, going to 3 Pro Bowls...

The Greatest Broncos of All Time....By The Numbers - #0
2008-06-04 19:28:00
He we go.  This series, starting with #0, will take us all the way until the Broncos and Raiders get ready to open the 2008 season.  It is my hope that it will inform, entertain, and create some debate among Broncos fans about different guys that have worn different numbers.  In some cases, there will be no debate because a number was only worn by one person.  That is the case with #0, who saw just one season of activity in a Broncos uniform. The Greatest Bronco To Ever Wear #0 - John Olszewski, FB -- 1962 Johnny 'O' Olszewski was an All-American Running Back at CAL from 1949-1952 before being drafted with the 4th Overall pick in the 1953 NFL Draft by the Chicago Cardinals.  Johnny O played for the Cardinals from 1953 – 1957 earning Pro Bowl honors in both 1953 and 1955 and Western Conference first team honors in 1956. After being dealt to the Washington Redskins in 1958 Johnny O became the ‘Skins primary back for three seasons and was first...

Denver Broncos Team Camp Day 2 - News and Notes
2008-06-04 14:16:00
Rod Smith makes an appearance, Ebenezar Ekuban is getting frustrated and #20 was barely off the back of Travis Henry before another player laid claim. All that and more in today's Team Camp update! No one knows exactly what the future is for Rod Smith but one thing's for sure, it will involve helping the Denver Broncos in some way, shape or form. Smith showed up on the practice field yesterday to help out with the receivers and expressed his love for the Orange and Blue - I love the Denver Broncos, I love the organization, so there ain’t nothing that I wouldn’t do to help. Whether it is on the field or off the field, anything I can do, even just sitting there and talking to some of the guys who are playing receiver now, just giving them little tips and stuff like that. I enjoy that because I know it is going to help them, therefore it helps the organization. There isn’t anything that I wouldn’t do to get us back to where I feel we belong. Smith already...

MHR's Forgotten Broncos -- Frank "The Trip" Tripucka
2008-06-04 01:00:00
Would you think a guy who never threw more touchdowns than interceptions in his career would ever get his number retired?  I would have said, "Hell no", before I learned that Mr. Francis M.J. "Frank " Trip ucka did.  The Denver Broncos have retired exactly three jerseys in its storied history.  The two obvious ones of John Elway's #7 and Floyd Little's #44 stood out, but then I noticed that ole #18 was retired long before both.  In the coming weeks, Guru will be doing his run down of the greatest Broncos ever to wear certain numbers.  It promises to be a very good series, but I can guarantee that his 18th post will be quite dull.  Since only one guy has ever worn the number.       Frank Tripucka was an All American in 1948 while playing for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, going 9-0-1 that season finishing #2 in the nation.  He was drafted number one overall by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1949 draft, but the Eagles traded Tr...

The Greatest Broncos Of All Time....By The Numbers - An Introduction
2008-06-03 20:07:00
I'll say it, right off the bat, this isn't what you think.  Well, acually, it is what you think.  A new series here on MileHighReport that will break down the best Broncos of all time, with a twist.  With just under 100 days until the Broncos and Raiders get their respective 2008 regular season's under way I figured I would find a way to pass the time and have some fun. Here's what is going to happen.  I am going to break down the Greatest Broncos to ever wear a certain number.  Starting with #0(yep, someone wore #0 for the Broncos) and going all the way to #99 I'll give you who I think was the best player to ever wear a certain number.  A couple of gimmies, of course, will be the guys that have had their numbers retired.  Other easy ones will be numbers that were only worn by one player.  In that case, consider this a history lesson. Of course, there is going to be a debate and I will include a poll, where applicable, to figure out if yo...

Denver Broncos Team Camp Day 1 - News and Notes
2008-06-03 15:14:00
The news from yesterday wasn't all about Travis Henry. The team was back on the practice field, this time for Team Camp . Looks like the Broncos are testing the waters using John Lynch as a part-time player - On nickel situations, Marlon McCree replaces John Lynch at safety. How they use Lynch this season, along with the other safeties on the roster, will be a huge question throughout the summer Ebenezar Ekuban was being used at DT on third down, similar to the way he was being used in 2006. DeWayne Robertson participated in his first full practice as a member of the Broncos and came out of it none the worse for wear - It felt good. I went full-go. We're getting a lot of good coaching out there from Bill (Johnson) and Jake (Burney). We've just got to take the coaching and keep progressing. Robertson has a chronic knee condition and is coming back from off-season wrist surgery. 460 Pounds. That's what Broncos Guard Montrae Holland likes to bench press - It's the mos...

'Enough Is Enough'; Shanahan Tired Of Travis Henry's Antics
2008-06-03 13:58:00
Time to put this to bed.  We have talked at nauseum about Travis Henry, and now that the poster boy for moral standing is no longer wearing Orange and Blue, we can put the Travis Henry era behind us.  First, Mike Shanahan closed the book by meeting with memebers of the media, discussing his reasons why the cord was cut with last season's prized Free Agent acquisition -- The release speaks volumes.  You've got the little things, and if you don't do the little things, obviously you can't count on somebody. I think our players expected it. I don't think it really surprised anybody. They know the type of standard we demand and if you don't step up to that standard, you're not going to be with us. We have certain expectations about the way we do things. He didn't meet those. That's it. So this is the way we're going to go. He's an excellent running back, but to do the things, (to) go where we want to go, everybody's got to be going the right direction. (He...

Not Wanting Competition, Travis Henry Stopped Showing Up
2008-06-03 04:23:00
So says Bill Williamson on Hashmarks - The Broncos' decision to release Travis Henry this morning has been coming for months. Broncos insiders said the team had been unhappy with Henry virtually all spring. In a rare statement about a released player, Denver coach Mike Shanahan made a point to say Henry had a lack of "commitment" to the team. The final straw came in the past week when Henry stopped attending the team's OTA sessions. Yes, Henry was hurt with a hamstring injury he suffered 17 days ago, but injured players are required to show up for work. Henry didn't. Perhaps he was upset that he knew he had to fight for playing time with Selvin Young, Ryan Torain and Michael Pittman. Whatever the reason, the team tired of Henry's lack of dedication. The Henry experience in Denver was one giant disaster. After he signed a five-year deal with more than $12 million in bonuses, Henry's days in Denver began to get rocky last August when it was disclosed in a Georgia court that he ...

Conventional Wisdom on Player Stocks 6-2-08
2008-06-02 19:30:00
Who's stock is rising and falling in the last couple of weeks?  Some Denver players look better than expected, and some are in trouble. Note: As I was writing this story, Travis Henry lost his job.  I had his stock in decline, but was nearly finished with the entire story when Guru published the breaking news. Let's look at who is is looking good, and who may be in trouble so far... Travis Henry RB - Major Decline "There are no more chances for Travis, and he understands that," Shanahan said. "As time goes on, we'll see how he handles that situation. The key is he has to stay healthy and keep his nose out of trouble. If he doesn't, somebody else will come in and do the job. It's not like we don't have the ability to go in different directions." (courtesy, Denver Post) When I read this quote from Shanhan I was surprised.  It was a pretty harsh statement, and an indication that Henry's time with Denver was in trouble.  THen came this: He wouldn'...

Guru's Point: The Hall of Fame
2008-06-02 05:03:00
Fans might need to try and do more to help get these Broncos in the Hall .  Unfortunately, even those efforts might not be enough.  I recently read a great article from 2006 about Floyd Little and the lack of Broncos in the Hall of Fame . Little is very humble about it, just the way we as fans pride ourselves in our team.  Check out these Floyd Little quotes…they’re even somewhat sad.  I’m not going into the debate on who should or shouldn’t be in the Hall here, I’m simply talking about the lack of Broncos in the Hall: something all of us at MHR have thought about. "Forget about Floyd Little, the [Hall of Fame] has already forgotten about me,'' he said. "But how do you go to six Super Bowls and only have one representative? That's disrespectful to overlook our players. My concern today is Denver.'' - The guy’s humble and he’s loyal to this team and just as pissed as a lot of us: just as pissed as us fans...

Put Your Best Guy on the Field, or Not?
2008-06-01 18:24:00
It sounds crazy, but do you always want your best guys on the field?  Why or why not?  Who wouldn't want to see the stars of the team on the field doing what they do best? Let's face it, we love to see our most talented and gifted guys on the field.  We also love to see the excitement that is brought with having these guys in play.  But where we as fans desire to see excitement and top notch players, coaches prefer to do what brings the team the best shot of winning. Read more...   Here's an example;  we love to see DEs who pass rush.  They are more fun to watch than run stopping DEs, and they demonstrate a tangible reward for the viewer, which is to say sacks and hurry ups.  For Denver fans, few things are more exciting to contemplate on the DL than pairing sackmaster Doom with potential superstar Jarvis Moss.  Imagine the excitement of watching both DEs dart in from both sides and disrupt play after play!  But is this so...

Why He'll Make the Team #1: Wesley Woodyard
2008-05-31 13:03:00
As my first attempt at some useful copy here on MHR, I thought I would start at the bottom of the barrel, try to counter-act some the negativity that comes with the months of scrutiny between combine and season, and try to make an argument for why some of the guys who are falling off of people's depth charts will end up on the squad. I am calling the series: Why He'll Make the Team We are going to start first with one of my favorite UFA pickups of the year, Wesley Woodyard. Admittedly I, as a Lexington, KY native, hold a place in my heart for UK Wildcats, but this guy has a whole lot going for him. He also took a lot of knocks in the last few months. We will look at those, and then I'll try to refute them. The Criticisms Most scouting profiles on Woodyard complain about 3 things: his "tweener" size, lack of direction changing speed and concerns about his strength. In addition his body control and hip fluidity have been questioned. Let's deal with his size first. The criti...

The Quest: Offensive Comparison '07 vs '08
2008-05-31 06:01:00
This post is an historic one for me as it is my 100th since joining Mile High Report almost a year ago.  I am currently working on several different upcoming posts and I was wondering if I should make a certain one my historic post, but then I thought I should just stick to what my original schedule was.  This was planned to be my next post, therefore, it will have to be my 100th post.  I recently posted my positional comparison for the defense along with grading the performance of the 2007 group and also applying a preliminary grade for what I see as potential upgrades or downgrades for each position.  I felt incomplete not having done the offense as well, so here it is. The 2007 offensive group had a solid core surround by a couple of glaring deficiencies.  The story of our season was told best by a series of posts called “NPTB” or No Points Left Behind that can be found all over the MHR Community during last season.  Our offe...

Broncos Quarterback Camp Day 7 - Darrent Williams Teen Center Opens
2008-05-30 15:15:00
Today will mark the final day of the Broncos Quarterback Camp .  There won't be much time off, however, as the team gets right back to work next week.  AS a reminder, here are the important dates remaining for the Broncos this "Re-Loading Season" -- Team camp: June 2-6; June 9-13 (tentative). * Minicamp: July 7-8. * Training camp: Players report July 24. Much of the news yesterday happened off the field as the Darrent Williams Teen Center was officially opened during a ceremony that was attended by Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen, Head Coach Mike Shanahan, Rosalind Williams, Darrent's mother and 30-40 Broncos players. PHOTO COURTESY It was a moving day, complete with 27 Orange and Blue colored balloons being released into the bright-blue Denver sky and speeches from dignitaries and Broncos staff alike. I could grab all the quotes, talk about all that was said, but feel it would do the whole thing a disservice. There are two quotes I feel deserve mention, one from Darren...

MHR University - RB Depth Schemes
2008-05-29 23:00:00
As Denver looks at how to use their RB depth, let's take a brief look at the different ways that teams use RB depth. Each has advantages and disadvantages, and one isn't really the "best" way to go. It's a matter of what the team has available. Today we'll focus on roles of a RB with respect to depth (not roles in respect to player talent, like "power" or "speed"). These depth roles include primary, spell, change of pace, and rotational. I figured this very short article would be good because we are focused on camp right now (and Guru's great updates), and because battles for depth positions are key right now. Enjoy! Primary The advantage to having a primary back is that a team has a back they can count on to play most downs in a game, and to excell in his position. The drawbacks is that he costs more, and if he goes down there is rarely someone good enough left to take his place. Teams like Denver have the advantage of a system that negates the need for a primary bac...

Denver Broncos Quarterback Camp Day 6 - News and Notes
2008-05-29 13:22:00
Some much to say, so little space!  Actually, I have all the space I want, and it's a good thing.  Yesterday seemed to be a busy day for guys getting injured(Dre Bly), guys feeling better(Jay Cutler) and guys that are simply off their rocker(Todd Sauerbrun).  We'll start with the Quarterback. Jay Cutler says he is completely back to normal, or at least what normal is now. The weight is back to normal, the conditioning is back to normal, and cutler is ready to go -- I feel fine, I feel like I did last year at camp. I've gotten everything back, I can definitely feel a difference from March. I've got all of my zip. I can make all the deep throws. It definitely feels good to do that again. Culter's teammates are also glad to see the 'old Jay' back -- Brandon Stokely - It's almost like night and day between right now and the end of last year. Patrick Ramsey - He's not a different person. Jay's Jay, but at the same time, he's easier to be around - and I don'...

The Quest: Defensive Comparison '07 vs '08
2008-05-28 23:31:00
“The Quest ” for me must begin with the defense.  2007 was the worst defense statistically the Broncos have fielded in a long time. At least when it comes to the most important stat, Points Allowed.  The Broncos gave up 409 points last season, only the 1-15 Miami Dolphins gave up more points in the AFC.  In short, this defense was an embarrassment to the organization and its fans.  I want to believe that our veterans have a quiet determination and swagger this offseason that they didn’t display at the beginning of last season.  Okay, so the veterans are saying all the right things again this year.  What does that mean?  Nothing actually.  They are professionals and any company/organization wishes to portray a united front to the public.  What we need to do is to compare this year’s projected starters with last years dismal group.  And as a group, 2007 was quite dismal. NOTE: I saw that HT had already posted a...

Michael Pittman Passes Physical, Officially Joins Broncos
2008-05-28 17:23:00
The Denver Broncos on Wednesday signed unrestricted free-agent running back Michael Pittman, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Broncos also on Wednesday waived fourth-year safety Marviel Underwood.Pittman (6-foot-0, 228 pounds) is an 11th-year player who joins the Broncos from Tampa Bay, where he spent the previous six seasons (2002-07). The running back played his first four professional seasons (1998-2001) with Arizona after the Cardinals selected him in the fourth round (95th overall) of the 1998 NFL Draft from Fresno State University. In 145 career regular-season games (78 starts), Pittman has totaled 5,307 rushing yards on 1,316 carries (4.0 avg.) with 21 touchdowns. He ranks second among all active NFL running backs (Tampa Bay’s Warrick Dunn) with 3,400 receiving yards on 415 catches (8.2 avg.) with eight scores. The veteran stands ninth in the league among all active running backs with 8,707 career yards from ...

Denver Broncos Quarterback Camp Day 5 - News and Notes
2008-05-28 13:52:00
I hope you all had a great Holiday weekend.  I know I did and I once again thank those of you that kept the site rolling along.  The Broncos also enjoyed the weekend before getting back to it yesterday.  Let's take a look at was was seen and heard on Day 5. Travis Henry has been officially put on notice. The Broncos reached a tentative agreement with Free Agent RB Michael Pittman, which should become official today after the 32 year-old passes a physical. You can read more about it HERE and HERE. We'll get to Henry in one second. As for Pittman, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus for those keeping score at home, thinks he can get some things done for the Broncos - There's a lot of ways Michael can help the Broncos, he can play fullback, halfback, he can catch the ball out of the backfield, return punts and return kicks. He's a versatile back. Pittman, whose arms dwarf most mens' thighs in terms of pure girth, feels healthy and ready to go -- I know I can play. I've ...
