Thursday morning / afternoon tickets for Ultimate Fight Night 12 go on presale for UFC Fight Club Members at 10AM PT / 1PM ET.  Followed up with a newsletter presale on Friday and a general ticket sale on Saturday.  The Ultimate Fight Night will take place at The Palms in Las Vegas Nevada on January 23rd 2008.  The featured Welterweight fight will be between Josh Burkman and Mike Swick, while the featured middleweight fight between Drew McFedries and Patrick Cote.  Also fighting that night, Thiago Tavares and Michihiro Omigawa, Cory Hill and Joe Veres, among others that will be announced.

UFC Lightweight Championship Belt is on the Line - Stevenson vs. Penn

Despite last weeks mentioning that Sean Sherk would keep His UFC Lightweight Belt , today, UFC.com announced that on January 19th 2008, Joe Stevenson and BJ Penn will face off at UFC 80 Rapid Fire for the Lightweight Championship Belt once possessed by Sean Sherk. On December 4th, the California State Athletic Commission decided to reduce Sherk’s suspension from the UFC, but the UFC decided to withdraw Sherk’s recognition as the UFC Lightweight Champion. Dana White stated, “I have nothing but respect for Sean Sherk and I believe he’s been honest throughout this whole process, But BJ Penn and Joe Stevenson will be fighting for the lightweight title at UFC 80 on January 19th and Sean Sherk will fight the winner for the title.”

It was announced at the end of The Ultimate Fighter 6 Finale that Forrest Griffin and Quinton Rampage Jackson would be the coaches for TUF season 7.  Not only is this an amazing announcement because it validates Forrest as being at a level capable of training UFC newcomers, but additionally, because Forrest is given an opportunity at the end of the season to face off with Rampage!  The two will face off for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship belt.

Big John McCarthy Leaves the UFC as a Referee

It’s official, Big John McCarthy is retiring as a UFC Referee for an opportunity to become an on-air personality and adviser with Toronto-based The Fight Network. Tonight, TUF 6 finals will be John’s last bout with the UFC, unfortunately ending with 99 refereed events for the UFC - 100 would have been cool? But then again, the UFC wasn’t the only place that he refereed, and considering this, he has worked at over 500 mma events in total… I guess the 100 mark isn’t so cool after all?

It was announced today by Yahoo Sports that Sean Sherk will keep his UFC lightweight title.  According to the short story, today “the UFC confirmed that Sherk remains the promotion’s 155-lb. titleholder.” So I guess this makes the Joe Stevenson / BJ Penn Interim title a worthless tag?  Hopefully the winner of the BJ vs Joe fight will get a title shot against Sean.

Loomy on the sherdog forums posted this 1up video game magazine cover for the new street fighter IV video game and man is he right, the street fighter character Ryu depicted on the cover of the magazine looks just like Joe Lauzon .  As Loomy astutely points out, artists are often inspired by things they see in popular culture, so there is a possibility that Joe influenced him.  Great find Loomy!

UFC Referee Big John McCarthy May Announce a Retirement!

According to MMA Junkie, Big John McCarthy, the infamous “Let’s get it on!” UFC Referee who’s been around since the early days of the UFC, may announce a retirement this Friday. According to MMA Junkie, McCarthy is scheduled for an interview to make an important announcement. According to sources, this announcement may very well be his retirement…  Junkie stated that McCarthy has refereed 98 of the total 100 UFC events.  It seems very possible that John might end his career on his 100th event which would be UFC 80 granted he participates in UFC 79.  The results of the interview will be interesting.

Something New… Watch UFC 79 Live at an Arena?

The UFC is doing something different this time.  UFC 79 is being held at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas Nevada on December 29th 2007.  Although it’s taking place on the West Coast, the East Coast will have the ability to watch the event live at Madison Square Garden on Big Screen TV’s.  Matt Serra will be hosting the “VIP Party”, ticket prices will be $30. So what do you think? Would you go to an arena to watch a UFC event on a big screen tv with a ton of other people? Or would you just pay the money for PPV on your home TV?

Horrible News, MMA Fighter Sam Vasquez Dies After Injury

Horrible news, it was announced yesterday that Houston Texas MMA Fighter Sam Vasque z passed away weeks after being injured at Renegades Extreme Fighting in Texas’ Toyota Center. According to the report, Vasquez was knocked out in the third round of his bout with Vince Libardi. Sam lost consciousness and began to seizure. According to Sherdog.com, after “enduring separate surgeries to remove blood clots from his brain as well as a massive stroke” Sam was discharged from the St. Joseph Medical Center intensive care and later transferred to Hospice. According to the fight sanctioning committee, Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, “To date, the evaluation shows that this event was conducted in compliance with all procedures”. Randy Couture met with Dana White this past Wednesday. Among the topics discussed was a fight between Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 81. According to Tom Hamlin of Yahoo, Couture turned down the offer.  Now, remember, we don’t know the terms of the proposed fight and we don’t know his reasoning for turning down the fight.  Couture suggested that he wants some time to with his newly wed wife, to travel and enjoy his home; “I want to take some time and go on a vacation, spend some time with my wife.
