2008 Year in Review
2008-12-31 15:39:00
Welcome to my 4th annual year in review, where I take the first line or two of the first entry of each month in order to produce a random and (hopefully) interesting summary of 2008. January: New Year?s Day used to be one of the best days of the year as a sports fan. February: Are you just sitting around your home waiting for the game to start?March: Did you know that this week (March 3-9, 2008) is National Procrastination Week?April: In preparing for the upcoming vacation, we thought it might be about time to join the 21st century and purchase a digital camera.May: In addition to more upbeat stories about the economy and the fact that Rev. Jeremiah Wright won?t go away, one of the major news items this week was the Miley Cyrus pictures taken by Annie Leibovitz for Vanity Fair.June: I have watched each of the first four games of the Stanley Cup Finals in a different state.July: What do I have in common with Hillary Clinton? A: Shots of Crown RoyalAugust: So I?m at my fancy Chicago h...
Me vs. Debt - 2008 Year in Review
2008-12-23 15:26:00
So I've started thinking about my goals for 2009. Its only appropriate to take a look back at 2008 first...I went into 2008 with huge goals! I can't describe how thankful I am for that. Even though I didn't meet every goal, I made great progress. I feel 1000% better about my situation than I did back in 2007. Lets go through the list of my 2008 resolutions:8 Ways to Cut My Net Worth Debt in Half in 2008Credit Card DebtI am going to pay off my $14,939 credit card debt by putting $1400 per month towards it. First and foremost, I have to eliminate high interest credit card debt. The sooner, the better. In my original Financial Resolution for 2008 post I described my plan. Since then my $17k goal has been reduced to $15k but my plan remains the same. My budget has been cut down to bare essentials. I'm going to start making more time to tutor and keep selling my stuff for extra income. So did I pay off ALL of my credit card debt? No. I did keep my expenses low and I worked...

Our 2008 TV Year in Review (Part I)
2008-12-23 00:05:00
Favorite supporting character: Forget frienemies Blair and Serena. GOSSIP GIRL’s best duo is, without doubt, Blair and her maid, Doretta. Most successful homeless guy: Okay, we know Alton Brown – host of The Food Network’s IRON CHEF AMERICA as well as numerous other programs – isn’t actually homeless, but geez… could someone buy the guy a mirror? And a comb? Most reliable laffer: There’s nothing better — or harder to pull off — than a good farce, which is why WORST WEEK amazes us with its ability to do so each and every week. Biggest cop-out: We were disappointed when DIRTY SEXY MONEY, obviously uncomfortable with transgender character Carmelita (given surprising depth by real-life transsexual Candis Cayne), took the easy way out by having Patrick’s mistress gunned down. Best example of a hair don’t: Already one of the most annoying – not to mention classless — personas on SURVIVOR: GABON, Randy didn’t do himself any favor with that Mohawk. Most...

Burrito Year in Review
2008-09-10 16:43:00
I?ve written and deleted numerous sentences to start this post. It?s hard to explain the significance of earning free burritos for a year at California Tortilla. How can I properly express my love of burritos, the subsequent desire never to have a burrito again and then the realization that burritos really are good? Well, let?s go back to August 2007. As part of the grand opening of a new location, California Tortilla has a promotion where the first 10 people in line at 11am will get free burritos every week for a year. When they opened last August, I was #8 and wrote all about my experiences waiting in line.So now that the year is complete, here is the summary of my California Tortilla adventure:Free Burritos: 34Free Quesadillas: 13Free Chips & Queso: 2Free Salads: 1Missed Weeks: 4Total Savings: $278.09I?m sure that you have lots of questions, so I?ll try to answer them.Q: Did you get sick of burritos?Yes. I had burritos for several months and decided that maybe I should eat ...

2007 Sabermetric Year in Review: Arizona Diamondbacks
2008-04-13 07:01:00
Kids, if you’re out there reading this, take the following piece of advice. Never ever ever ever do a baseball annual. When I first started this series, I actually figured I’d be done by Spring Training. What was I thinking!?!?! We end our very long tour (stop #30) of the U.S. in the Arizona Desert ...
2007 Sabermetric Year in Review: Atlanta Braves
2008-04-06 05:48:00
My second-to-last stop on the tour (#29!) was actually my last stop on my actual tour of the U.S. Well, it’s not exactly a tour, but my wife is from Atlanta, and we were down there with my in-laws (and my nieces!). But it sounds cooler to say things like “I’m on a tour of ...
2007 Sabermetric Year in Review: Baltimore Orioles
2008-03-28 07:26:00
The tour makes its last stop in an American League stadium in Baltimore. It must be frustrating to be an Orioles fan. Listing off what the Orioles have done in the past few years sounds like a record on repeat (4th, 4th, 4th, 4th…) Record: 69-93, 4th in AL East (see there it is again) Pythagorean Projection (Patriot formula): 70.22 wins ...
2007 Sabermetric Year in Review: Boston Red Sox
2008-03-27 07:27:00
I’ll try to be magnanimous, but these are the same Red Sox that broke my heart this past October. And there’s only one… nevermind… I went to Boston about this time last year. I have to say, pretty town. I walked around Fenway (it was before the season started, so no game and no “Sweet Caroline“ for me…) ...
2007 Sabermetric Year in Review: Chicago Cubs
2008-03-25 06:15:00
OK, the will-they-or-won’t-they-b-ut-you-know-they-eventually-wil-l thing with the Cubs and the Orioles over Brian Roberts is reaching tension levels not matched since Pam and Jim. Other than that, my adopted home team is swimming along nicely. Stop #26 on the tour is just up the street to Wrigley Field (which is every bit as gorgeous as it looks ...
2007 Sabermetric Year in Review: Chicago White Sox
2008-03-25 06:13:00
Well, the next stop (#25) on the tour will be a short trip, although I never really get down to the South Side. If you ever want to know how deep that Sox/Cubs/South Side/North Side divide goes in Chicago, allow me to tell the following story. In 2005, right after the White Sox won the World Series ...

How to tell that someone is not actually from Ohio. I mention that I’m from Cleveland. They mention that their friend Larry is from Cincy thinking that there’s an off-chance that I know him (because we must have grown up near each other). I chuckle when I think of the fact that I’ve been in ...
2007 Year In Review: October Red Sox-ALDS
2008-03-17 20:26:00
As we move deeper into the offseason, I will be recalling month by month the 2007 season of the World Champion Boston Red Sox.      &-nbsp;    &n-bsp;    &nb-sp;    &nbs-p;     -;     - AMERICAN LEAGUE DIVISION SERIES- BOSTON RED SOX VS. LOS ANGELES ANGELS. GAME ONE: The Sox started off the playoffs with a bang.  Josh Beckett was phenominal in his first playoff start with Boston.  Beckett threw a complete game shutout, allowing just 4 hits and striking out 8.  YOOOUK got the offense started, with a HR in the bottom of the 1st.  Ortiz added a 2 run HR later on, and Lowell added in another RBI, which was plenty of enough for Beckett.  Sox were dominant and headed into Game 2 with a fully rested bullpen and a 1-0 lead. GAME TWO: Game 2 was arguably the most exciting game of the postseason.  A back and forth affair came down to one...

2007 Sabermetric Year in Review: Cleveland Indians
2008-03-13 07:00:00
My favorite spot on the tour. Stop #23. In a very real way, it’ll be the next stop on my tour of the U.S., since I’m moving (back) there this summer. Please excuse any momentary lapses in objectivity on my part. I love the Indians. Record: 96-66, 1st in AL Central (Won ALDS 3-1 over Yankees, Lost ALCS 4-3 ...
2007 Sabermetric Year in Review: Colorado Rockies
2008-03-11 05:30:00
A friend of mine is a big Rockies fan. He grew up in Denver, and at the beginning of October, he was planning a trip back home to visit his parents. His wish was that he could go back home and see the Rockies in the World Series. He didn’t exactly get his wish (the weekend ...

2007 Year In Review: September Red Sox
2008-03-08 05:13:00
As we move deeper into the offseason, I will be recalling month by month the 2007 season of the World Champion Boston Red Sox.      &-nbsp;    &n-bsp;    &nb-sp;    &nbs-p;     -;     - SEPTEMBER After losing 4 in a row to end August, Red Sox Nation was very nervous for the start of baseball's final month.  But the Sox gave exactly what the fans ordered, a fast start-one included with unexpected history... PERFORMANCE OF THE MONTH Some young minor league dude named Clay Buchholz was set to pitch his 2nd career major league start and certainly no one expected to see history on that night.  Buchholz went on to throw the 17th no-hitter in Red Sox history.  It was an unbelievable night and a great moment that will never be forgotten.  This kid instantly rose to fame and the Sox got 10 times the energy boost they needed. The Sox went on...

Triangle (NC) Market Trends: 2006 Year in Review
2008-03-07 00:00:00
In reviewing the market trends over the past 12 months in the Triangle area (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill), several noteworthy items surfaced which highlight the steady growth in this vibrant metro area. To start: 1. Resale closings of existing homes were up 11% over this 1 year period. 2. The average sales price for housing across the counties was 225k (Orange County ? Chapel Hill posted the highest average price and appreciation over this timeframe). 3. New housing starts and commercial development remained strong. Although average days on the market for typical homes in the area averages just under 3 months (~72 days), the inventory on hand continues to absorb steadi
2007 Sabermetric Year in Review: Detroit Tigers
2008-03-04 07:02:00
This is a dangerous one for me to write. I’ve made no secret that I’m an Indians fan, and the Tigers and the Indians are shaping up to challenge one another this coming season for the AL Central. Oh well… looks like my next stop (#21) is a jaunt across I-94 to Detroit to take ...

2007 Sabermetric Year in Review: Florida Marlins
2008-02-20 07:50:00
The tour continues, I believe to stop #20 in Miami. I still harbor (pun?) a certain amount of irrational resentment toward the Marlins for the following offenses: 1) wearing teal after the 90’s ended, 2) the 1997 World Series. Seeing that the Marlins have torn down and re-built about 15 times since then, maybe I need to get over it.  Record: 71-91, 5th in NL East Pythagorean Projection (Patriot formula): 71.51 wins (790 runs scored, 891 runs allowed) Team Statistical Pages: Baseball Reference Baseball Prospectus FanGraphs MVN Blog: Marlins Today More Marlins Resources: Latest News Contract Status (this is actually worth reading. I’m serious) Trade Rumors Overview: In his book, The Baseball Economist, which is a fantastic read, J.C. Bradbury, the guy who writes Sabernomics, picks the Marlins (and the Indians!) as a team that will have success in the future because they don’t over-spend for the talent that they put on the field. I suppose when your payroll is on...
Jay Cutler -- 2007 Video Year In Review
2008-02-12 17:15:00
Jay Cutler loses games, right?  Well, some have said that he makes crucial mistakes.  This video takes that theory to task.  Perhaps the best 5 minute or so breakdown of the 2007 Broncos that can be found.  Enjoy! Jay_Cutler_2007_Video.wmv
2007 Sabermetric Year in Review: Kansas City Royals
2008-02-11 17:39:00
Seeing that we’re soon closing in on Spring Training I wanted to lend my colleague Pizza Cutter a Sabermetric YIR hand in order to get these bad boys done before the real New Year’s Day. Next up on that list of teams to review - those Royals from the good old KC. Record: 69-93, 5th in AL Central Pythagorean Projection (Patriot formula): 73.6 wins (706 runs scored, 788 runs allowed) Team Statistical Pages: Baseball Reference Baseball Prospectus FanGraphs MVN Blog: Royals Authority More Royals Resources: Latest News Contract Status Trade Rumors Overview: I don’t think I would be blowing anyone’s mind by saying that the Royals have not been very good lately. In the last fifteen years they have produced only two winning seasons (1993, 2003) and finished in 3rd place during both of those seasons. In fact, their highest seasonal finish since 1993 came in 1995 when the triumvirate of Mark Gubicza, Kevin Appier, and Tom Gordon led them to a 2nd place, 70-74 finish. W...
2007 Sabermetric Year in Review: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
2008-02-10 06:08:00
A few weeks ago, I was driving through Anaheim. I was in town to do a job interview (true story… I could theoretically be living in L.A. in a few months), and I drove past Angel Stadium and Disney Land (about a mile apart). So, in a sense, when I say that this is stop ...
2007 Year In Review: July & August Red Sox
2008-02-10 04:14:00
As we move deeper into the offseason, I will be recalling month by month the 2007 season of the World Champion Boston Red Sox.      &-nbsp;    &n-bsp;    &nb-sp;    &nbs-p;     -;     - JULY Although the Sox were coming off their worst month of the year in June (13-14), they were still well in control of the AL East entering July.  But, the Sox continued to play sub-par as they reached the "dog days of Summer." After losing the first game in July to Texas, the Sox bounced back with 4 in a row, including a sweep over Tampa Bay, in their first meeting of the year.  However, they were swept in a 3 game set @ Detroit to end the 1st half of the year.  The Sox entered the all star break with a solid 9.5 game lead in the AL East, but the Yanks were back @ .500 and that was not a good sign.  After starting the second half with a 3-5 r...

2007 Year In Review
2008-01-12 19:41:00
2007 marked the first year that Mixed Martial Arts was recognized on a somewhat level playing field with the rest of the sports world. Even though a lot of time and effort was put into the general expansion of the sport, the fighters and promoters still had enough left in the tank to make this the most compelling year the sport has ever seen. Some storylines were good for the sport while others hurt its reputation, but each provided publicity, the one thing this sport will never turn down. Originally written for MMA MadnessStory of the year: The Purchase of PRIDE. This deal, years in the making, brought just about every major fighter (with the exception of Fedor Emelianenko) under the UFC?s tent. It paved the way for dream match ups we thought we?d never see. And it added freshness to two divisions which had recently run stale. No more just Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell ? suddenly, Rampage Jackson, Dan Henderson, and Wanderlei Silva were all possibilities! And with Andrei Arlovski an...
