Travel Bargain: Couchsurfing = Free Lodging on Vacation
2009-11-07 16:04:00
Take a look at this post introducing the concept of Couchsurfing over at Chicago Now's travel blog, Chicago Outbound. As a cheapskate, I love the notion of couchsurfing, which means staying on other peoples' couches or in their spare bedrooms for free. Sure, that's something backpackers have always done, but nowadays they have a Web site so you can find your couches to sleep on or offer up your own.
Lawsuit: Lufthansa and UAL ruined vacation
2009-10-27 20:19:00
A Kentucky couple is suing Lufthansa and United Airlines for damages resulting from a series of events that caused them to miss a family vacation in Florida.According to the complaint, Vladimir Shtapov and Vera Shtapova, residents of Louisville, Kentucky, were scheduled to leave the City of Perm (Russian Federation) on June 30, 2009 and return home to Kentucky in time to leave for a vacation in Florida with their son and his family.  The complaint states that the following series of events then occurred:- The couple was supposed to board the June 30th Lufthansa flight back to Kentucky via Frankfurt, Germany at 3:20am but at 6am, the LH agent advised that "the cargo door would not close" and the flight...
Seville: A Slow Day Before the elBulli Dinner
2009-09-23 04:42:00
Brunch was at hotel recommended restaurant called Al Alcantina. This is located around the central square in Seville historic city center. We had a table outside the restaurant. Our waitress was really friendly and helpful. No bread here ... they served us those thingy above. It was rock hard and definitely on the dry side. We took a couple and then left it alone. The waitress recommended the Ensaladilla La Alcantina which she said was the prize winner of the Best Classic Tapas in the 2003 Seville Fair of Tapas. Sure, we said ... it was worth a try. ?8.70 is how much it costs. It was creamy, served cold and refreshing -- absolutely marvelous. We had never had these before. I think it is made with mayo with potatoes and some vegetables. The puzzling thing is how could this have been classified as tapas? So I did some research and indeed it is considered as SPANISH tapas despite the Russian word in the name.

Protected: Seville: Stages of Spanish Style Bullfighting
2009-09-22 05:38:00
There is no excerpt because this is a protected post.
Seville: Bullfighting
2009-09-21 16:00:00
Each night, there will be three matadors who will fight six bulls. Yeah ... we learned from the Bullfight Museum tour that these bulls are born and bred for this one night. If you ask me, it is a one side fight. The whole sequence are made to weaken the bull gradually ...
Seville: Self-Service, Toothpick Tapas
2009-09-21 04:30:00
Their bread was pretty good. Oh back to the tapas. We ended up ordering quite a number of tapas. Some we selected from the bar, others were brought to our table. The above is cured meat and cheese. We like the one above. It is Cheese, Walnut, Raisin, and Chocolate Sauce. It is like a dessert to us.
Seville: Rabo de Toro and Plaza de Espana
2009-09-20 23:53:00
Time to eat. After the visit to the Bullfighting Museum in the morning, it just occurred to me that there is one thing that we had not eaten yet in Spain ... Rabo de Toro! I remember reading somewhere that the bull killed in the bullfight is sold in the market for its meat. The meat is not prime meat but the best part is the Rabo de Toro. So we went scouring for a place for Rabo de Toro. We went to a few places asking if they have Rabo de Toro. That drew smiles from a number of places we went to. We finally found one restaurant which turned out to be pretty good which has that. He he he ... you know which part of the bull that the Rabo de Toro is made of? We sat at the patio and was immediately served olives and water. The olives was salty and sour. For the life of me, I can never learn to appreciate olives. Yet it is so popular around the Mediterranean.
Seville: The Bullfight Museum
2009-09-20 07:01:00
Near the Torre del Oro, we began to see sculptures of Matadors. We were near the Bullfight museum. One of the things we planned to do in Spain was to watch a bullfight. Bullfighting is very much a popular sport in southern Spain unlike in Barcelona where people do not like bullfighting. Our hotel concierge told us that summer is the off season for bullfighting. It was disappointing to us but at least we planned to just visit the Bullfight Museum.
Seville: El Cortes Ingles
2009-09-19 19:16:00
We went to El Cortes Ingles. Yeah, it is a departmental store but it has a great cafeteria. More importantly, people don't smoke here! Wrong choice. English is also at a premium here. At least the waiters (in bow ties and tuxedos!) were very professional, polite and patient. The Summer menu above is in Spanish but we already know quite a number of Spanish words. We could piece together some words to know what some of these means. It is a 3-course menu for ?9.95. I remember calculating that we were spending a lot of money on drinks (was almost $40 Canadian already!). We told ourselves that we are bringing two, maybe three, bottles of 2L bottles the next day even if it means breaking my back carrying it in the backpack. You know, I like the formal-ness in Spain even in serving water in nice glasses. Mind you, this is a cafeteria.
Seville: Real Alcazar
2009-09-17 05:03:00
Next stop that afternoon was to visit the Real Alcazar. Alcazar is the Spanish word meaning Castle. It phonetically sounds the same right? Actually the word Alcazar is based on the Arabic word al qasr, also meaning castle. The word Real means Royal. So, Real Alcazar means the Royal Castle. Real Alcazar is still in use by the Spanish royal family as the official residence in Seville. The section is off limits to tourists. We were told that they live ... on the apartments on the second floor.
Seville: The Cathedral of Seville
2009-09-16 04:31:00
We were surprised to learn that the Cathedral of Seville is the third largest church in the world. This cathedral was built immediately after the re-conquest of the city from the Moslem Moors. It was built on top of the great Moorish mosque. The bell tower used to be a minaret. When it was built they wanted to make this the biggest and grandest of all churches to show off the reconquest of the city. For many years before the reconquest, Iberia peninsular was under the control of the muslim. I think Spain is about the only country that had successfully re-conquered the country from the Moors and turned back the tide of Islam. In the process, it had made Spain more Christian. The Cathedral of Seville is huge with soaring roof with pointed arches of the Gothic style. This style allows building of this size without having thick walls to support the structure ...
Seville: Hotels in Spain
2009-09-14 15:47:00
We don't normally post about hotels but we will make it an exception this time. This is because we were so pleased with the hotels in Spain throughout. We were particularly impressed with the hotel in Seville. Even though it was a last minute booking, we managed to snag a hotel called the Best Western Cervantes Hotel right in the middle of old Seville. It was just ?50. We did not expect much especially with a "Best Western" name to it. We selected this primarily because of the low price, location and the reviews we found on Trip Advisor.
Seville: From Barcelona via Girona on Ryanair
2009-09-13 22:10:00
From fearing being late for the flight, we ended up waiting because the flight was delayed 90 minutes. Frankly, it was a frustrating wait because Ryanair did not even have anyone at the gate for the whole time to let anyone know how long more it was going to take. There are no aero bridges. So everyone had to embark the flight from the tarmac and having to carry our own baggage up and down the stairs. There were no seat assignments on budget carriers. You have to pay extra for the right to get on first to secure better seats. For cheapo like us, we ended having to rush. At least the Spaniards are generally courteous.

Euro'tion 2009 (read: European Vacation)
2009-09-03 05:44:00
WARNING! This will be a loooooong narra'tion! It's just over a month now since I returned from our Euro'tion Tour. Seems almost a distant memory. Therefore, I felt it necessary to capture some of the highlights before they fall through the sieve that is my mind.We flew into London on Thursday 18th June for 4 nights. Dear and I caught a couple of shows over the weekend - Hairspray & Sister Act. Gay much? Most enjoyable, although we were a little disappointed that Sister Act did not contain any of the original songs from the film. Nevertheless, they were camp & catchy. We were ecstatic to hear about Saturday nights' headline act at Heaven... Sophie Ellis-Bextor, especially given her recent rise to Rancer fame with Heartbreak. But what a strange evening that turned out to be! Before heading to Heaven we went to GAY bar for drinks. Quite horrendous and overcrowded. Think downstairs Shift in the Video Bar. Before long we made our way to Heaven. Now, according to all reports, t...

Now that making money online is letting me save some money for both rainy days and perhaps a vacation sometime soon, I am looking into venues that are both relaxing and economical for A and myself to visit. We found some nice places that are worth considering for sure and one of them is the Myrtle Beach Golf Resort. If not for the fact that both me and A don't golf, the Myrtle Beach Golf Package is surely attractive as is the Myrtle Beach Golf Vacations and would definitely be in our shortlist. The best thing about the place is also because you just book online. No fuss no mess..If you are a golfer.. definitely a must check!Cheerio...

On Vacation, But Still Drinking Well

I’m in Hilton Head, South Carolina this week, and just wanted to share a wine that I had the other night: The Descendientes de Jose Palacios 2007 Bierzo “Petalos.” This is a red that we’ve had in some of our classes before, and it definitely deserves a mention again here. Because not only is it ...

How you can tell your family vacation is over…before it starts.
2009-07-29 07:04:00
Husband, two kids, and I are traveling up the Pacific Coast Highway this summer. Why? Because there’s nothing good on television. First we had to get there. Tampa to Los Angeles took three lifetimes and one annoying Lindsay Lohan movie. We spent the day in the Dallas/Ft. Worth airport because American Airlines decided at the last minute that our plane’s engine looked too much like Swiss cheese. As a result, the Robinson Clan didn’t get to see much of Los Angeles. Too bad, because I really wanted to show the kids what happens with little talent and the right hair care products, but enough about the Jonas Brothers. We’ll learn that lesson at a later date. We finally landed in the City of Angels, drove to Santa Barbara, and fell asleep. After a few hours drooling on ourselves, we woke up to a wind chill factor colder than Buffalo, and I immediately wondered what home, a bottle of wine, and a few dozen tranquilizers would feel like. Here is what I learned. A vacation, it’s of...
Adventurous exercising on vacation
2009-07-22 04:03:00
Summer is the time when families and friends head out and take a vacation.  Hopefully, the vacation has everyone heading somewhere that has normal summer weather (unlike Chicago which is experiencing one of its coldest summers ever).  Just because you head out from the city does not mean your exercise routine has to suffer. If you're near the ocean lace up those gym shoes (or go barefoot to create an uneven surface thereby challenging your body to work harder) and head out to the beach for a run. The sound of the ocean will create a calming effect for you as well.  Who doesn't love feeling the ocean water at their feet anyway?...

Back From A Long Vacation
2009-07-14 20:17:00
Taking a vacation is something that everyone needs to do every once in a while. Well, I am back from a long vacation from the Philippines. My children and I have been away from home for 4 months and 2 weeks. Now, we are back and back to a normal life. It definitely ranks as my best vacation. I had a great time with my family. Hubby was in the Philippines too, but he stayed there for only 2 weeks. He arrived on June 17, and then we returned on June 30. We had two connecting flights; it started from Manila to Japan, to Chicago, and then to Tennessee. My flight to the Philippines felt like it took me too long, because I was alone with Maria and Bianca; but upon our return, it wasn’t so bad, because hubby was with me. Our flights took us 24 hours, including the waiting period for connecting flights. It’s good to be home. Now, I am back on my regular blogging.

2009-07-02 17:43:00
It won’t be after I put my dick in it. Here’s something you may not know, Internet: sitting around all week while on jury duty, waiting for hours upon hours to be called in and told to spit out your gum and asked how much you hate the blacks and also the jews, is a lot like an all-day trip to the DMV, possibly to have your car’s title and registration placed solely in your name after you get divorced. Except with jury duty, you’re able to pass the time daydreaming that maybe, just maybe, you’ll get to send someone to the chair by week’s end. Fingers crossed! Here’s a haiku I wrote about an experience I had outside city hall: It’s not that I can’t spare the thirty-three cents, hobo; I just choose not to. I know I ended that last line with a preposition, but haiku is a Japanese art form, and Engrish is far less grammatically rigid.

"Vacation all I ever wanted. Vacation had to get away..." the Go-Go's had it right. Face it, we need vacation time to stay sane. So what's wrong with those of you not taking vacation this summer? Results of a new Harris Interactive poll of more than 1,000 adults in the U.S. released last week showed 30 percent said they don't plan to go on vacation this summer. Maybe if they took a vacation, they wouldn't say such crazy things!  Continue reading to find out more poll results and my Top 5 suggestions on how to feel like you're on vacation....

A New Variation on a Familiar Theme - The Summer Vacation
2009-05-07 00:44:00
“I’m on a pilgrimage to see a moose.” I’ve explored this before, but for those just joining us - What is anticipated with pleasure, experienced with discomfort, and remembered with nostalgia? No, I’m not talking about getting arrested at a political protest or losing your virginity. I’m talking about the legendary, feared, dreaded and lampooned Family Vacation. This summer, my family and I are flying to California, renting a car, and heading north. When relaying our plans to coworkers and friends, they usually start blinking nervously before wondering out loud, “Two nine year-olds in a car for a week? Are you high?” High on life, my friend. High. On. Life. There are two reasons for this trip. Guilt: I have been promising the kids a California vacation for the past three years. Instead they’ve been treated to three summers of “Are we moving to Colorado Springs again?” The annual road trips from Tampa to The Springs or back again included fun stops in Katrin...
