Preventing post-traumatic stress
2012-05-18 06:40:00
A decade after the start of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, studies have shown that the incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among troops is surprisingly low, and a Harvard researcher credits the drop, in part, to new efforts by the Army to prevent PTSD, and to ensure those who do develop the disorder receive the best treatment available. In an article that appears in the May 18 issue of Science, Professor of Psychology Richard J. McNally says there is reason for cautious optimism when it comes to the prevalence of PTSD. While early estimates suggested as many as 30 percent of troops might develop PTSD, current surveys show the actual rates ranging from 2.1 to 13.8 percent. The most rigorous survey of American troops found that 4.3% of all American military personnel deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan developed PTSD, and 7.6 of those reporting combat exposure did so. “As a society we’re much more aware of these issues than ever before,” McNally sa...

5 Tips to eliminate stress forever
2012-03-28 10:04:00
At different stages, you may think you feel stressed and share stories about it. Listen to words and tenses you use to describe observations.   You may fear history will repeat or worry about what has not yet happened.  How do you keep your head above water? Perhaps you also allow the mind to linger on missed opportunities because you felt something was too risky or you feared what would happen and got stressed.  Be attentive to how often you write and speak in the present tense.  Rest assured, life  exists beyond stress, and it is accessible to all.  Ponder these 5 tips to eiminate stress forever; 1) Let go of the past.  You cannot change the past so why spend your time thinking about it and talking about it? Watch what happens when people around you do this.  The pulse races, adrenalin kicks in and an emotional roller coaster can take over.  Know that a silent observer beyond brain and m...

Constant Stress Linked to Memory Loss
2012-03-13 06:08:00
Chronic stress may lead to memory problems by interfering with glutamate signaling in the prefrontal cortex, according to a study in mice. Young male rats exposed to repeated stress had significant memory impairment and suppression of glutamate transmission in that brain region, Zhen Yan, PhD, of the State University of New York at Buffalo, and colleagues reported in Neuron. The findings suggest that the prefrontal cortex ?is a more sensitive area in response to repeated stress, especially during the adolescent period when this region is still undergoing significant development,? the researchers wrote. Chronic stress can impair executive functions, such as memory and attention, and has been shown to trigger maladaptive changes associated with stress-related mental disorders. The major stress hormone cortisol, for instance, has been linked with depression.
Stress, Depression Linked to Accelerated Aging
2012-03-03 04:58:00
Shortened telomere length, which is known to be associated with aging, is also associated with depression and hypocortisolism, new research shows. These findings confirm earlier research showing shorter telomere length in depressed patients in comparison with nondepressed individuals from the general population, according to lead author Mikael Wikgren, PhD, from Umea* University in Sweden. ?It also goes on to suggest that this difference is related to a dysregulated stress response, which is a stress response pattern which has been tied to chronic stress,? he told Medscape Medical News. ?This, in turn, underlines the important role stress regulation plays in depressive illness, and, in view of telomere length being considered a marker of biological aging, suggests that stress accelerates aging.? The study is published in the February 15 issue of Biological Psychiatry.

Stress and the Holidays
2011-12-22 14:46:00
Stress and the Holidays.  Somehow they go hand in hand.  Overspending, too much food, lots of travel, work- and family-life balance; it is all a recipe for disaster. My own family of six knows first hand about all of these stresses.  The 18 year old wants a laptop for Christmas (and other various $$$ gadgets), the 9 & 6 year old have had way too many cookies and are pinging off the wall, and the one-year old doesn't like the car seat for more then 4 hour stretches at a time (making for a not so quiet trip to Grandma and Grandpa's last weekend).  And Mom and Dad can hardly wait for school to start again ... When speaking of Holiday stresses I can say "I get it!"  The DoD Community recognizes this and wants to be sure our military-families are taken care of.  We at MilitaryAvenue want to equip you, empower you and let you enjoy the time with your family you so richly deserve.  We know you will enjoy this newsletter and will come away with so...

Planting improves heart rate, stress levels of mentally challenged adults
2011-12-13 16:01:00
Participation in horticultural activities can improve confidence and social skills, cultivate a positive attitude, and rejuvenate the mind and body. Many studies have emphasized the effects of horticultural activities in relation to physical and psychological rehabilitation, but few have considered the influence of these types of activities on mentally challenged people?s autonomic nervous system (ANS) and on the stress hormone cortisol. A new study examined how activities such as pressing flowers, planting, creating flower arrangements, and making topiaries affect stress relief for patients who are mentally challenged. In the first experiment of the study, the heart rate variation (HRV) was measured in 30 mentally challenged people at a rehabilitation center in Daegu, South Korea. Researchers in the second experiment measured the cortisol levels of 20 mentally challenged people from a residential home in Yeongcheon, South Korea. Min-Jung Lee from the Department of Horticultural T...

Chronic post-traumatic stress disorder in women linked to history of rape,
2011-11-29 16:16:00
A Florida State University clinical psychologist has identified factors that could cause some women with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to have chronic, persistent symptoms while others recover naturally over time. At the conclusion of a two-year study of women from across the nation, Assistant Professor Jesse R. Cougle found that those with PTSD who reported a history of rape or severe childhood physical abuse were more likely to suffer chronic PTSD symptoms. What?s more, women who reported more ?re-experiencing? symptoms, such as nightmares and flashbacks, at the initial assessment were more likely to suffer from persistent PTSD symptoms two years after the study began. ?What makes our findings unique is the recovery component,? Cougle said. ?Most studies of this kind have looked at risk and resiliency or the factors that determine who develops PTSD and who doesn?t. We studied factors that influence recovery, or lack thereof, in a sample with PTSD.? ?What we found,int...

Marijuana could prevent post-traumatic stress symptoms
2011-09-21 18:38:00
Cannabinoids (marijuana) administration after experiencing a traumatic event blocks the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-like symptoms in rats, according to a new study conducted at the University of Haifa and published in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology. ?We found that there is a ?window of opportunity? during which administering synthetic marijuana helps deal with symptoms simulating PTSD in rats,? said Dr. Irit Akirav of the University of Haifa?s Department of Psychology, who led the study. In the study, which Dr. Akirav conducted with research student Eti Ganon-Elazar, the researchers set out to examine how administering cannabinoids (synthetic marijuana) affects the development of PTSD-like symptoms in rats, whose physiological reactions to traumatic and stressful events is similar to human reactions.
