Free Palestine: INTIFADA! ???????
2008-06-01 16:50:00
TIME - "Has Maliki Conquered Sadr City?"
2008-05-22 00:09:00
From Time magazine:"Sa'ad Mutlieck was one resident of Sadr City heartened to see armored columns of Iraqi Army forces rolling deep into his neighborhood on Tuesday. "We hope the government is serious about ending all the armed groups so life could be back to normal," said Mutlieck. "The situation is very, very bad."'Odd; hadn't Maliki and Iraqi forces totally screwed up and lost (or not gained) Sadr City. I recall that was the line when Amb. Crocker and General Petraeus were in D. C.. It was Tet all over again right? Should Time be reporting this? I mean seriously, it didn't happen over night and doesn't that qualify it as a loss and old news that no one really cares about anyway?DeMediacratic Nation Blogrolls
Irak : Les affrontements de Sadr City font 11 morts
2008-05-14 03:14:00
Fallujah Revisited: Bush, Petraeus Prepare 'Cleansing' of Sadr City
2008-05-10 00:16:00
by Chris Floyd I.George W. Bush and David Petraeus are preparing to make a new Fallujah in Sadr City, home to two million Shiites in Baghdad. Thousands of people are already fleeing the area before the full-scale slaughter and destruction begin. As in Fallujah, the multitudes who cannot escape will be trapped in a "free fire zone", subjected to ruthless bombardment and ground assault. Thousands — perhaps tens of thousands — of innocent civilians stand in the shadow of imminent death. The assault is part of the run-up to the coming attack on Iran — an attempt to secure the rear of that new front by destroying Iraq's Shiite nationalist forces. It is also part of an on-going effort to eliminate the strongest rival to the Shiite extremists that Bush has installed in office in Iraq, before the conquered land's fall elections. The preliminary assault on Sadr City has already begun, of course. As the BBC notes, in the last seven weeks around 1,000 people ...
Death toll in Sadr City fighting approaching 1,000
2008-05-01 20:02:00
BigNewsNetwork.com A spokesman for the Iraqi government's Baghdad security operations says 925 people have been killed in Sadr City. The spokesman, Tahseen al-Sheikhly, said Wednesday 2,600 others have been wounded. Sadr City has been the scene of fierce clashes pitting U.S. and Iraqi forces against Shi'ite militiamen loyal to radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. The death toll announced Wednesday is much higher than previous estimates, which indicated about 400 people had been killed in Sadr City in the past month. Meanwhile, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has vowed to disarm militias by force and disband the Shi'ite Mahdi Army, Sunni insurgent groups and al-Qaida in Iraq.

al-Maliki: Sadr City is Terorist Safe Haven
2007-06-30 18:26:00
This morning U.S. forces "rolled into" Sadr City in an effort to hunt down Iranian-linked militants. Clearing militants of all stripes out of all parts of Baghdad is one of the goals of the surge of US forces in Iraq which has been underway since February, yet Iraq's prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, has condemned today's raid since his office didn't pre-approve it. Moqtaqa al-Sadr, the senior Shia cleric in Sadr City (which is named after his father), heads one of the factions which is part of al-Maliki's government alliance as well as the Mehdi Army, one of the two most prominent Shia militias operating in Iraq. He also depends heavily on Iran for support: al-Sadr fled there when Saddam Hussein ruled Iraq, and fled there again this spring in the earliest stages of the U.S. surge. Sadr City, with a population of around 2 million, contains roughly 1/3 of the population of Baghdad. Yet al-Maliki has declared the area off limits to U.S. operations in the past, and today's rai...

U.S. Forces Open Push Into Sadr City
2007-03-05 00:48:02
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Hundreds of U.S. soldiers entered the Shiite stronghold of Sadr City on Sunday in the first major push into the area since an American-led security sweep began last month around Baghdad. Soldiers conducted house-to-house searches through the densely populated grid of squat two- and three-story buildings, but met no resistance in a district firmly in the hands of the Mahdi Army militia led by the radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, said Lt. Col. David Oclander. Maj. Gen. William Caldwell, a U.S. military spokesman, told Al-Arabiya television U.S. officials spoke daily with community leaders in Sadr City before entering the stronghold. “If you go to Sadr City today you will see joint Iraqi and American troops cooperating with the head of the Sadr City council,” Caldwell said in comments translated into Arabic. “There is no problem between the two sides, and we are trying to set up a small security center there.” Full Story Here: U.S. Forces Ope...
