Teams, engineers and riders spend hundreds of thousands of hours every year attempting to gain control of the minutest detail of motorcycle racing. Each part of the engine is weighed, balanced, analyzed and tested, even down to the bolts and washers holding the engine together. Frames, chassis, wheels, brakes and suspension are calibrated, adjusted, tuned and aligned. Riders run and cycle to gain aerobic fitness, work out with weights to gain muscular strength, and use sports psychologists to help them develop concentration and confidence. Even the mechanics and team members work both on fitness and skills, to help avoid even the tiniest lapse of concentration which could make the difference between winning and being forced to retire with mechanical problems. 2007-07-14 13:26:00 The weather has warmed up considerably at the Sachsenring, but no change at the top of the timesheet. Casey Stoner continued his terrifiying domination at the German track, over 3/10ths faster than his team mate, and big surprise, Loris Capirossi. Capirossi has been almost invisible for most of the sessions, and indeed, for most of the season, and with negotiations with Ducati stalled, needs a strong result to get his career back into gear. This looks like the first, tentative step on the way. But Capirossi's small steps are as nothing compared to Casey Stoner's giant leaps. The Australian had one awe-inspiring run of 10 laps, 7 of which were in the 1'22 bracket. Of the 21 full laps he rode, 9 were 1'22s. Where Casey's race pace seems to be in the high 1'22s, for the mere mortals of the field, such as Valentino Rossi, race pace will be somewhere in the low 1'23 bracket. 2007-07-13 17:05:00 Another session dominated by Casey Stoner this afternoon. Stoner was consistently the fastest rider, and took another big chunk out of the lap record today. Valentino Rossi was once again the only man who could get anywhere near Stoner, finally closing to within 35/100ths of the Australian. The big surprise of the session is Sylvain Guintoli up in 4th spot. Guintoli set his fastest time on a set of qualifiers, but was quick on the previous laps on harder compound tires. Whether he can carry this form into qualifying remains to be seen, but the Dunlops have looked better than ever so far at the Sachsenring. This afternoon's session was riddled with incidents, with rider after riding running off the track, though few actually crashed and hurt themselves. But the session was rounded off with a piece of grand theater, with Nicky Hayden's Honda RC212V self-destructing in the most spectacular manner, spewing out smoke and engine parts onto the track down the front straight. Unfortunately, no one remembered to tell Casey Stoner, as already in the first session, he has shattered the lap record by over 2/10ths of a second. Stoner was consistently faster than everyone else in the session. Interesting to see Carlos Checa in 2nd spot, he was another surprise, being so fast on a bog stock Honda satellite bike. And an even bigger surprise is to see Sylvain Guintoli, on Dunlop tires, in 9th spot, ahead of Dani Pedrosa down in 11th. Nicky Hayden isn't as far forward as last time out at Assen, and Valentino Rossi is loitering down in 8th spot, while team mate Colin Edwards is up in 4th. But where Assen's transformation from public roads to closed racetrack was a long process of sections being removed piece by piece, in a form of death by a thousand cuts, the Sachsenring sprang fully-formed from the brow of the ADAC, the German automobile organization, rising from the ashes of the legendary but deadly street circuit which was finally killed off after three riders lost their lives there in 1990. The old road circuit was discarded, and over a period of three years, a new circuit arose around the ADAC traffic safety center, another wry irony, the old Sachsenring having claimed so many lives. Although both Randy de Puniet and Anthony West are doing very well on the updated Ninja ZX-RR, the Kawasaki Racing Team feel they need an experienced and talented rider to put their machine on the box, where they feel it belongs. And now, it seems, a decision could be near. Motorcycle News is reporting that Kawasaki will announce that they have signed either Loris Capirossi, Marco Melandri or John Hopkins at the Sachsenring MotoGP round in Germany on the weekend of July 15th. Loris Capirossi is believed to be the most likely name to be signed, as the Italian veteran is deeply unhappy at his treatment by Ducati. Already, Honda have announced that they expect Dani Pedrosa to re-sign his contract with HRC and Repsol Honda for 2008, and now, Motorcycle News is carrying a story about another key player. According to MCN, John Hopkins will be announcing his future plans at the Sachsenring MotoGP round. Hopkins told MCN that he had three firm offers on the table from various manufacturers: An offer to renew his contract with Suzuki; An offer of a factory ride for Kawasaki; And an offer to join the Tech 3 Yamaha team. In addition, Hopper had had some interest from Ducati, and talks with Fausto Gresini's satellite Honda team, but neither of these had gone further than initial conversations.
