Three-Way Race Shaping Up For Teachers Union Presidency
2009-10-26 20:47:00
There are a bunch of new stories posted on Substance, of interest especially for those of you engaged in the teachers union leadership contest that's taking place.  Former CTU president Debbie Lynch has formally announced that she's running against current president Marilyn Stewart.  CORE is running, too, but hasn't named a slate of candidates.  George Schmidt, the editor and publisher of Substance, was a member of the Lynch administration.  Several of his writers are CORE members.  What do you think of the various caucuses and candidates, and who do you think is going to win?  ...

Malware Defensive Techniques Will Evolve as Security Arms Race Continues
2009-09-21 08:06:00
"While the majority of malware attacks stick to tried and true methods, malware authors are getting better at being stealthy and finding ways to fight back against the security pros trying to thwart them. A well-known example of this is the Conficker worm disabling anti-virus updates by blocking infected computers from accessing the Web sites ...
There You Go Again: Jimmy Carter, Race, and Civility
2009-09-20 21:20:00
In the late 50’s and early 60’s Robert Welch, head of the John Birch Society, posed a threat to the advance of the nascent conservative movement by his malevolent speculation about the motives of those whom he considered enemies of the state, including the Eisenhower administration.  Left unchecked, the Bircher’s eruptions might have aborted Barry ...
With Anemic Ratings, Anderson Cooper Dwells on ?Race Factor?:Ignores Racist
2009-09-16 07:59:00
Thanks to Anderson Cooper, I got an extra few minutes of cardio last night.  As I was cooling down on the stairmaster, his CNN program came on one of the television monitors.  Breathlessly, he was reporting something I had just read on Gateway Pundit, the worst president in U.S. history (well, at least since the ...
Momentum Race Group to toss in the Camaro on the Koni Challenge!
2009-09-13 22:46:00
The following press release is no doubt just the first of the Camaros headed for the Koni Challenge. The major difference between the Camaros and Mustangs racing here and in the Rolex series is the engine - the Mustang has raced for several years with an engine that is not a production engine, against competitors with production engines. Unfair? Yes. Would it have been competitive otherwise? Apparently not, since Ford saw fit to force a non-production engine thru the sanctioning bodies. Of course, just about anything can be made to be competitive - look at the success of the original Saturn cars in endurance racing for several years. The Camaro will do well in a form that corresponds to it's production version. That's fair. Press Release follows: PRESS RELEASE:DALLAS, Texas - Momentum Race Group is pleased to announce it will be fielding a new two car team for the 2009 Grand-Am KONI Challenge competition. Featuring the new Riley Technologies-built Camaro, the team is putting to...

Handpicked Highlights: Who Would Win a Usain Bolt-JoePa Race?
2009-09-09 00:57:00
Paterno ready to tackle the 100-meter dash. Not only was longtime Penn State coach Joe Paterno back on the sideline after spending much of last season in the press box, but he managed to run onto the field with the team before Saturday's win over Akron.  Great to see Paterno healthier and mobile, although he admitted he's not ready to challenge Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt anytime soon. Not everyone in Happy Valley is healthy.  Nittany Lions fans should be concerned about linebacker Navorro Bowman, who left the game Saturday in the first quarter with an injury.  Blogger Eric Thomas wonders out loud if the Lions would be better off to sit Bowman a week or two and let him rest for...

So Predictable? When The Going Gets Tough, The Libs Play The Race Card

Well I bet nobody saw this coming.  Bogged down by sinking approval numbers for the President, and a growing disdain among Americans for the democrat led senate, Charles Rangel has enacted the ever-so-popular liberal defense mechanism, the race card.  Rangel, the Chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means committee stated that “bias” and “prejudice” toward Obama are fueling opposition ...

The Race for the Supporter's Shield
2009-08-31 09:33:00
Looking at the standings after the Fire's 1-0 loss to D.C. United late Saturday night, I came to the conclusion that any hopes the Fire had of taking the 2009 Supporter's Shield (the honor given to the league leaders at the end of the regular season) had burned out. The Fire had dropped another 3 points at home and the two squads in front of them - Columbus and Houston - were facing a pair of winnable games on Sunday. It should've been over for the Fire. Then Sunday happened....
Govt Of India Joins The ‘Job Site’ Race
2009-08-24 08:09:00
At a time when most of the youth in our country is facing a problem of employment which is scaled up with the recession, this initiative by the Government of India will win accolades. News here states that the GOI is creating a web portal which would consist of comprehensive details about the skilled manpower requirements of industry and the available skilled manpower in the country. Mr Harish Rawat, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, announced at the Global Skills Summit organized by FICCI, “Government has realized that it was time employment exchanges across the country were modernized“. There were other announcements too; but, the one that struck my thought process was that it will in verity turn out to be a boon for the youth. With increase in competition between this proposed government portal and the private job search sites, it is the youth who would benefit with the most accurate and reliable info being provided. It would be unfair to comment on who w...

Making Gates? issue a racial one prevents us from moving beyond race
2009-07-28 22:27:00
I have long believe that the primary goal of the gay movement should be promoting real and lasting social change, creating a society where we can live openly without suffering derision or marginalization because of our difference.  That is, people would see our sexuality as incidental to our essence. “Oh, you’re gay?” someone would say when ...

Henry Louis Gates: Nope, Certainly Race Had Nothing to Do with That
2009-07-23 14:30:00
Photo: Courtesy of Harvard UniversityHenry Louis Gates Jr. is awesome. Or so I thought until I found out he was a burglar. A Harvard professor and director of the W.E.B DuBois Institute for African-American Studies, Gates is one of the most thoughtful voices on race in America today. He's the author or editor of over fifteen books on African-American history, race relations and the culture wars. He's also the host, narrator and creative mind behind PBS's engrossing mini-series "African-American Lives," which traces the ancestral lineages of famous black Americans. It's an amazing show that somehow spans history and feels immediately personal at the same time (I must admit, despite how I feel about his love life, the Morgan Freeman...
The Death Race: An Endurance Event for Mind AND Body

The disclaimer and waiver for this event are easy enough to understand. Lacking the legalese that is so common in modern-day sport, the document has only three words: "I might die". After all, the event is called The Death Race for a reason. It's mascot? Try a partially-dismembered plastic ske
Warrior Dash Makes A Splash- Race Review

October race choice
2009-07-18 17:25:00
And the winner is………&hell-ip;….. With so many good ones out there this Fall, this was a really tough choice. If I was healthier and could pick only one race, it would have probably been the Portland marathon…. it’s one of my favorite of all time. Alas, my lung function has declined to the point where it would be really foolish, even for me, to attempt another full marathon…at least right now. So Ive decided instead, to play it smart (for a change) and do a shorter race much closer to home. The SJ Rock and Roll half marathon is a relatively new race here in this part of California, but its received really good reviews and my friends rave about it. This will be my first R&R race, so it will be a new experience for me. The event organizers have posted my story on their website(scroll down to the bottom of the page). With all the live music, it should be a really fun event. Id love to see you out there. For those of you who are t...

370Z at 24 hours Nurburgring race - followup
2009-06-27 17:36:00
Wondering what happened to the two 370Zs at this years 24 hour endurance race at Nurburgring? It was a disaster all around - and you can watch it unfold thanks to these YouTube videos. Note the wheel sitting on the side of the road with the front suspension upright still attached. And then for some reason they disassemble it - to reuse the upright? The Zs themselves were far from stock, using the older 3.5 liter engines and third-party sequential gearboxes. So there's not a lot we can learn from this for "civilian" track events. Nissan of Europe wanted to use this event to kick off the launch of the 370Z in Europe... but it didn't work out very well. The German motorsport show GRIP has provided approx. 42 minutes of video coverage, including in-car video from the yellow 370Z. All in German, although there is some English in the background and the results are apparent enough. Lots of extra video shows what it's like to spectate at this legendary event - consider this a...
Tour of America's Dairyland Stage 8 Road Race
2009-06-27 15:56:00
Team GEARGRINDER's Hartley Sports Yellow Jersey for Second Consecutive Day After Greenbush, WI - With just two days remaining in the inaugural Tour of America's Dairyland, Greenbush, Wis, hosted Stage 8 on Friday with a 10-mile loop road race dotted with dairy farms when not amid the gorgeous landscape and winding roads of the Kettle Moraine Forest.  Nature's foliage provided shade and a much-needed respite from the scorching heat of the Tour's recent stages.Accomplishing what teammate Frank Travieso did days earlier, Yosvany Falcon (Champion Porsche p/b Herbalife) of Miami stood highest on the podium in the Men's Pro Race, with Ryan DeWald (Battley Harley-Davidson) and Sheldon Deeny filling up the respective second and third blocks.  The Men's Overall yellow and...

Carl Long’s penalty reduced to 8-race suspension, but NASCAR still in dan
2009-06-18 21:31:00
Welcome back ladies and gentleman, well I guess third time is a charm, the reason why I say that is this is the third time I have written on this Carl Long penalty from the first article I wrote here on RaceDriven called “NASCAR: Should we expect that this record penalty against Carl Long will be the normal penalty for everybody?”, then at the beginning of the month (June 2009) after the NASCAR appeals board heard the penalty and only reduced the suspension to the Cup Series, I wrote on this for a second time in an article I called “NASCAR and the appeals board gets it wrong with the Carl Long penalty. So here we are again for the third and last installment because there’s no other options, since then after an unsuccessful appeal with the appeals board, Carl Long filed a final appeal with the Stock Car Racing commissioner Charles Strang and that final appeal was heard on Monday in Chicago, yesterday, the commissioner ruled and only reduced the suspension from 12-races to eigh...

Are NASCAR victories tainted if the race is called early? I.e. Reutimann’
2009-06-01 22:12:00
I guess I am a little bit late to the party, but you know I had to make my grand entrance in the only way I know how, anyway, over the past week, the talk in NASCAR has centered around the latest first time winner David Reutimann and how he won this first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career victory last Monday at the Coca-Cola 600.Now last weekend was one of the biggest Motorsports weekends all season long and just so happen to be the longest with the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 all on the same day, however while the Monaco Grand Prix and the Indy 500 did go off as scheduled, but weren’t the races that should have shined, the Coca-Cola 600 had to be postponed until Monday.I had been looking forward to the Coke 600 as season long and unfortunately it just didn’t go off as anyone expected. Monday was really no better with the one and off rain showers that plagued the race from going full out all day long. After a good NASCAR All-Star race with this ne...

370Z in the 24 Hours of Nurburgring endurance race
2009-05-23 20:48:00
We're following the 24 hour race at the famous Nurburgring track this weekend and came across this pic of a 370Z competing in the race. It'd be interesting to know how it's setup... from the pic below we can see a massive front oil cooler, cold air intake, and deep front airdam. And the cuts made in the front fascia to feed cooling air to the intakes and radiator. Stay tuned for more details, if we can find them. We're very interested in what it takes to make a 370Z work on the track - we've talked before about coolers and the like and this car is a rolling example of what works - or doesn't. We'll see in 24 hours what shape they're in.
Bay to Breakers - A Race To Remember
2009-05-21 09:15:00
More at Zennie62.com | Follow me on Twitter! | Get my widget! My Bay to Breakers Sunday started unlike any in the past 19 or more years and it was even better than the "KGO coolness" of the last seven years. From 2002 to 2007, I'd get up at 4:30 in the morning to meet my friend Beth at the KGO Radio "Morning Stretch" held in the lobby of One Market Street before the start of the run. The basic advantage of being with KGO Radio was the free coffee and orange juice in the morning, plus we were at the start of the line, right where I could get hit by flying tortillas and giant beach balls. Sadly, in 2008 KGO Radio pulled its sponsorship of the event but we still managed a front-line position. This year was just plain different. My constant trips between California and Georgia where my Mom lives made planning for the B2B difficult this time around. I'm not complaining, it's just the fact of family life right through here. But just by asking I managed to score a p...
