39 Verbs at Packer Schopf Gallery
2009-10-15 23:55:00
by Jeriah HildwineBunnies by Laurie Hogin (though not those featured at Packer Schopf)Steph and I had been in Kentucky for the Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot, but expedited our return so we could attend a one-night only event at Packer Schopf Gallery.  I always make it a point to attend Packer's events, as they are almost always excellent, and this one proved to be no exception.  Produced by Industry of the Ordinary, the exhibition consisted of 39 artists, each of whom made a work of art inspired by a prompt in the form of a single verb, different for each artist....
Chicago Cubs Headlines for Friday: Packer Week Edition!!!!
2009-09-11 15:13:00
Come on, you didn't expect me to go all week without mentioning the Packers game, did you? Even though THE BEST FOOTBALL GAME EVER is on tap for Sunday night, baseball is still in full swing. Let's concentrate on the matter at hand. Paul Sullivan gives us ten reasons to keep watching the Cubs. Warning, some of these may be stupid: 1 Cra-Z's starts : When Zambrano walked off the mound last year before Piniella got there, the manager called him back and told him never to do that again. When Zambrano walked off the mound muttering Wednesday, Piniella chided him in the dugout.  (snip) 2 I-Cubs: Randy Wells' arm, Jake Fox's bat, Andres Blanco's glove and Sam Fuld's...
Robert Horvath and Karen Savage at Packer Schopf
2009-09-11 02:30:00
by Niki Grangruth In the main gallery space, Robert Horvath's large paintings of giant organism-like forms are a combination of molecular biology illustrations and the backgrounds for sci-fi movies. Horvath creates fictional organisms inspired by the book The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins, which investigates how natural selection of genes affects evolution. Horvath's organisms seem to be forming, disintegrating and mutating. Using hyper-saturated colors, he paints forms that alternate between organic forms tand geometric shapes and 3D polygons....

I'll take bids on the Packer football, but I'll never part with the Flutie
2009-04-02 04:41:00
I have only two things that could properly be considered sports collectibles: my football autographed by every member of the Superbowl-winning, Brett Favre-led Green Bay Packers, and my far-more-valuable photo of me standing in front of Doug Flutie's empty locker in Buffalo.I bet that latter one is priceless. But I've had my hands on some other sports memorabilia. I had an autograph from former Packer Brent Fullwood. And I got Bo Ryan and Barry Alvarez to autograph some junk for my father-in-law. All in all, though, kind of a sad collection, given how much I love sports. I was thinking about that tonight because I was browsing around "Authentic Sports Collectibles.com," a site that sells... authentic sports collectibles. I browsed over there in the first place because The Boy's birthday is coming up, and if anything, he's more of a sports nut than I am, and I thought maybe getting him some autographed stuff might be kind of cool -- we checked out a store once when we were on...

Up and down game for Packer draft picks
2008-08-12 16:38:00
Among the Green Bay Packers' seven 2008 draft choices on the offensive side of the ball, it was an uneven game against the Cincinnati Bengals. While a couple of players were up to the occassion like Matt Flynn, there were also some that played poorly like Breno Giacomini. The Good:Matt Flynn -- The seventh round draft choice played better than the Packers' second round draft choice at quarterback. Flynn led a touchdown scoring drive that was capped off by a screen pass for a touchdown by Kregg Lumpkin. And if Lumpkins wouldn't have fumbled late in the fourth quarter, Flynn might have led another.Jordy Nelson -- Most of Nelson's fireworks came on punt returns when he got ample opportunities. His four returns went for a 7.8 yard average highlighted by a 16 yard return. He also played solidly on offense when he registered two receptions and was a target for at least one more that fell incomplete.Jermichael Finley -- His two receptions were nothing special, but his blocking drew prai...
Best/worst case scenario for Packer defensive ends
2008-08-10 15:24:00
Today we take a look at the Green Bay Packer defensive ends in our best and worst case scenarios for the 2008 season:Aaron Kampman -- There's no reason to think the two time Pro Bowler is going to have any letdown in his play. He's still young enough that there's plenty of energy left in his body and he'll be hungry for a Super Bowl ring. He plays the run and the pass equally well. Best case, he leads the entire NFL in sacks and becomes first team All-Pro. Worst case, Kampman has his first non-Pro Bowl season in three years.Cullen Jenkins -- Due to some nagging injuries, Jenkins had a down year in 2007. Can he return to his 2006 form or will he rebound in a big way? If the Packer defense is going to improve on last year's numbers, they'll need an improved effort from Jenkins especially considering the injuries along the defensive front. Best case, Jenkins has the type of season he had in 2006 when he played solid at defensive end, and on passing downs he becomes one of the NFL...
Best/worst case scenarios for Packer defensive tackles
2008-08-09 23:03:00
In our continuing series, today we take a look at the best and worst case scenarios for this year's Green Bay Packer defensive tackles:Ryan Pickett -- Pickett is one of the most underrated players in the entire NFL. He absolutely clogs up the middle of the field making it hard for opponents to run up the gut. His ability to keep blockers off the linebackers is top notch. And his hustle to make plays all over the field despite his size goes unnoticed by the national media. Best case, Pickett starts to get some recognition for his outstanding play as he has an All-Pro season. Worst case, his current hamstring issues linger and he becomes just another guy.Johnny Jolly -- Jolly's upcoming court date in Texas hangs over the head of the Packers. If he's convicted, he stands to get a four game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Best case scenario, Jolly somehow avoids suspension and becomes a solid starter that fills the void left by Corey Williams' departur...
Best/worst case scenarios for Packer linebackers
2008-08-08 18:55:00
In our ongoing series, we now preview the linebackers in our best case/worst case scenarios:A.J. Hawk – Now in his third year, this may be the season Hawk puts it all together. And that’s not to insinuate that Hawk hasn’t played well his first two years. He’s been reliable as German engineering. It’s just that he hasn’t had that breakout streak of game changing plays that he was known for in college. Best case scenario, Hawk has a Pro Bowl year full of interceptions, forced fumbles and recoveries. In addition, they add the blitz to his repertoire, which results in at least five sacks. Worst case, Hawk stagnates and was the same old player he was his first two seasons, reliable but unremarkable.Nick Barnett – With any possible legal troubles behind him, Barnett could pick up where he left off last year, his finest season as a professional. It’s a shame he didn’t get a Pro Bowl he deserved. He made plays all over the field, plain and simple. Best case, he earns a Pro...
Packer O-line work on fumble recovery
2008-08-08 18:39:00
With a little time to spare before the next sequence of practice began, offensive line coach James Campen had maybe four minutes to kill. He got the entire offensive line unit taking part in a fumble recovery drill in which a ball was buried underneath a veritable heap of mats and pads. The linemen would proceed to search for the ball in a scrum-like fashion. Campen could be heard instructing, “Peel somebody off,” as the players hunted for the ball.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Packer wideouts working on the little things
2008-08-08 18:35:00
During a redzone team portion of practice, several receivers made nice catches along the sidelines while trying to stay in bounds. Chris Francies and Jordy Nelson both caught passes that went for touchdowns. Unfortunately, the Press-Gazette also noted that Francies dropped a couple balls after making some nice ones.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Eat up.
Best/worst case scenarios for Packer cornerbacks
2008-08-06 16:31:00
Today's installment of the best and worst case scenarios for every player on the Green Bay Packers 80 man training camp roster continues today with the cornerbacks:Al Harris -- It was a confusing year for Al Harris. Most people will probably point to Harris' poor performance in the NFC Championship game in failing to adequately cover Plaxico Burress. But yet he made the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career. Harris had a solid season, but not exactly the type that gets you to the Pro Bowl. It's just another example in a long line that players get voted into the Pro Bowl long after they're due as sort of a career achievement. That being said, Harris is aging, but he's not yet at the point where his skills are severely diminished. Best case, he makes the Pro Bowl again, and actually has a Pro Bowl type of year to deserve it. Worst case, age catches up to Harris and there are more games like last year's NFC Championship. Although Harris certainly remains a starter no matter w...
Best/worst case scenario for Packer safeties
2008-08-06 01:55:00
For the second year in a row, we present our best and worst case scenarios for every player on the Green Bay Packers 80-man pre-season roster. We start with the safeties:Nick Collins -- Collins has always been a solid but far from spectacular player. He's been a willing tackler but not a fierce hitter. He's been good in pass coverage but fails to make many interceptions. The best case scenario has him putting it all together in his fourth year and really, really breaking out. He has the talent. The worst case scenario has him losing his job to Aaron Rouse. If that happens, he's likely to stick around at least this year as a back-up, but he's unlikely to stick around Green Bay any longer in that type of role.Atari Bigby -- Bigby has the potential to build off a solid first year as a starting player. There's the possibility he will pick up where he became the NFL's defensive player of the month in December and a huge, huge playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks. Pro Bowl is n...
Packer paintball
2008-06-19 06:11:00
The Green Bay Packers took off from their regularly scheduled minicamp practice on Wednesday in place of a team building exercise. Paintball. The team went to nearby Commando Paintball in Abrams where they conducted an eight team tournament."The winning team consisted of running backs coach Edgar Bennett, defensive end Aaron Kampman, safety Tyrone Culver, fullback Korey Hall, running back Vernand Morency, receiver Brett Swain, and Ricky Brumfield, a minority coaching intern from Fairmont State," reports Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.It's not uncommon for a team to take off a scheduled practice every once in a blue moon to do some sort of activity. In the past, the Packers have gone bowling or golfing as well.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Eat up.
Ex-Packer found unconscious in Las Vegas
2008-06-17 07:36:00
Former Green Bay Packer wide receiver Javon Walker was found unconscious on a Las Vegas street, the victim of a possible robbery.Walker was taken to a hospital and has what's been described as "significant injuries" including a fractured orbital bone. It's been mostly downhill for Walker ever since leaving the Packers after threatening to hold out prior to the 2005 season. He enjoyed one good season with the Denver Broncos since, but has been injury-plagued for the most part. He's now a member of the Oakland Raiders, and his status is unclear until more reports begin to trickle in regarding his incident in Las Vegas.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Bill Schroeder retires as a Green Bay Packer.
2008-05-31 11:14:00
The wide receiver and former player of the Green Bay Packers Bill Schroeder has informed the Packers of his decision to retire from the game as a Packer. Schroeder had his longest NFL spell with the Packers from 1997-2001 and made 20 touchdowns and 225 catches for 3,435 yards in his 74 game stint with ...
The newest Packer
2008-05-23 13:00:00
The Green Bay Packers have signed rookie tight end Evan Moore.Moore (pictured) was an undrafted free agent out of Stanford. He had 103 catches for 1,555 yards and 12 touchdowns in his four year career with the Cardinal.Moore was originally signed by the New Orleans Saints right after the draft but has since been cut. It's curious that Moore had been cut so quickly. This roster addition gives the Packers plenty of competition at the tight end position.Tom Pelissero of the Green Bay Press-Gazette reports, "The move gives the Packers six tight ends, including four rookies -- third-round draft pick Jermichael Finley and undrafted rookies Moore, Joey Haynos and Mike Peterson."The Packers have assigned No. 8 to Moore. “When A Man Loves A Packer…”
2008-03-08 05:31:00
“…can’t keep his mind on nothing else.” It’s been a rough week folks. Newjoe’s lost a best friend, “the greatest quarterback to play the game.” I believe that and I truly respect the joy Favre brought to his job. Plus, his birthday’s the same as mine (which NJ says is one of the reasons he has an unholy man-love for Brett)! But poor guy, all these years, Favre made the game a priority in his life. “I won’t have to watch football live anymore,” were magic tragic words uttered on Black Tuesday, the day Favre announced his resignation. I’m real sad for NJ, yes I mean it, real sad.
Did you know? A "Packer" is an axe wielding maniac. A "Brown

Don't say I never taught you anything. While Mr. Irrelevant no doubt owns the vintage commercial market, also found at The Bog and Fanhouse, my wayback machine works even better. First enjoy the Oscar worthy acting performance of Art Monk, Gary Clark, and Darrell Green (is he in the locker or isn't he? I'm riveted!) There is nothing preempting another meeting of minds such as the one above in the 21st century. Gary Clark, D. Green, and The Monk are all alive and well and should they awake tomorrow with the urge to shill for Pizza Hut, you'd be talking yourself into a delicious anchove pizza at this moment. Hogs Haven is a champion for those that can't defend themselves, though, and those three behemoths of football need no blog to defend their right to sell products. I support the little guy, the honest, small business tobacco conglomerate who, per the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act, haven't been allowed to legally advertise their wears on the talking picture box sin...
Future Packer Adam Spieker?
2008-02-02 15:51:00
The Texas vs. The Nation Challenge is today (4 p.m. CST on CSTV), and the Green Bay Packers will likely have their eyes on Missouri center Adam Spieker.Spieker was one reason the resurgent Tigers had such a good season including being ranked No. 1 in the nation at one point and winning a New Year's Day game in the historic Cotton Bowl. He was a first team all-conference center on a lot of people's lists. And the Packers have a need for a backup center. This has been mentioned before, but the current backup is current starting right guard Jason Spitz. It would be nice if the Packers didn't have to rely on a backup that is a starter to begin with. At the very least, they'll be signing a center as an undrafted free agent. Although it's possible that they may select a center with second day draft pick.Spieker is kind of an unknown quantity at this point. WalterFootball.com has Spieker ranked as the third best center prospect in this year's draft and as high as a third round draft c...
Packer cornerbacks report card
2008-02-02 01:24:00
We finish off the secondary, and the defense for that matter, with our cornerback report card. We're almost done. Check back tomorrow for our special teams analysis that will wrap things up.Charles Woodson (A): I'm not sure why Woodson has been so underappreciated lately. His game changing touchdowns against Washington and Kansas City this year were unbelievable plays that probably should have landed him in the Pro Bowl. His turnover production diminished as the season wore on, but he was still a beast in coverage. The fact that he didn't play against Dallas or Detroit due to injury didn't help his cause.Al Harris (B+): Frankly, Harris has had better seasons. His berth in the Pro Bowl was more of a lifetime achievement award more than anything. But it's not as if Harris had a poor year, not by any stretch of the imagination. It's just that he was probably more deserving of the Pro Bowl in either of the previous two years than in 2008. He consistently lined up against the every...
Packer safeties report card
2008-02-01 13:09:00
We're breaking up our report card on the secondary today. Right now you'll get the safety evaluations with the cornerback report card coming later in the day. And don't forget to check back tomorrow as we finish things up with the specialists. Remember to scroll down anytime to check out our previous positional report cards.Atari Bigby (B+): The Packers finally found a replacement at safety for the years of futility that they put in with Mark Roman and Marquand Manuel. Bigby stepped up big-time for the Packers in 2008, and he was part of the reason the team saw an improved defense this year. He was NFC Defensive Player of the Month for December when he had four interceptions. His coverage has come a long way from the beginning of the year when he was criticized for not being able to cover tight ends. Is he perfect yet? No. But he will improve in coverage even more with time. He also has started to get a reputation as one of the game's hardest hitters as he put some good licks on...
Future Packer Nehemiah Warrick?
2008-02-01 00:12:00
The final collegiate all-star game happens this weekend with the Texas vs. the Nation Challenge being held on Saturday while televised on CSTV.Texas vs. the Nation isn't quite as prestigious as the Senior Bowl or the Shrine Bowl or even the Hula Bowl for that matter. But there are definitely some future draft picks auditioning for future jobs this week.It is this game where a lot of those late round draft picks and many undrafted rookies that fill training camp rosters are found. And with a good showing at practice this week and hopefully a good game as well, a couple of these guys could even slip into the first day.One player that has pro potential is Michigan State safety Nehmiah Warrick. The NFL Draft Guys continued their tireless player evaluations in El Paso this week, and say Warrick is one of the players to watch in their Texas vs. the Nation outlook. The NFL Draft Guys write, "Warrick is a solid sleeper that needs to bulk up somewhat. At 6’1”, 208 lbs., Warrick possesses...
Packer linebackers report card
2008-01-31 01:18:00
We're getting close to done with our report cards on the 2007 Green Bay Packers. Today we present to you our ratings for the linebackers. Make sure to check back tomorrow to take a look at the defensive backs, and scroll down below for our past positional analyses.Nick Barnett (A-): The 2007 season was Barnett's best season as a pro without a doubt. It's a shame he didn't make the Pro Bowl because he deserved it. He was a tackling machine making plays from sideline to sideline and in the backfield. For the first time, Barnett was really making plays on a consistent basis. His 3.5 sacks and 2 interceptions aren't bad for a middle linebacker either. Fans will be hoping that Barnett plays at this same high level for years to come.A.J. Hawk (B-): Fans are waiting patiently for that breakthrough season for Hawk. Unfortunately it wasn't 2007. That's not to say that Hawk wasn't solid, though. He was definitely solid and reliable, just not spectacular. I personally wonder how he get...
Packer defensive line report card
2008-01-30 14:52:00
We're done with the offense, and it's on to the defense in our annual report card. We start by taking a look at the defensive line. Come back tomorrow for our linebacker report card.Aaron Kampman (A-): Some people have called Kampman's production similar to that of Reggie White. If that's not a compliment, I don't know what is. He'll be making his first start in the Pro Bowl in February, although it is his second straight appearance. He can play the run and the pass equally well. He led the Packers in sacks for the second year in a row and was among the NFL's leaders as well. There's peace of mind in knowing that due to his work ethic, there will be no letdown for years to come.Cullen Jenkins (C+): Jenkins had a disappointing year from the standpoint that he received a hefty pay raise after a very productive 2006. Most glaring was that his sack count was down despite playing more often. Team definitely keyed on him moreso in 2007, but he definitely didn't live up to the hyp...

Murdoch Junior to buy into Packer media empire
2008-01-21 11:09:00
Lachlan Murdoch, the elder son of media baron Rupert Murdoch who had resigned as an executive with his father’s News Corporation in 2005, is all set to make a return to the media industry today by signing a two billion-dollar-plus deal to privatise James Packer's "Consolidated Media Holdings" (CMH). An announcement on the deal is likely to be made to the Australian Securities Exchange later in the day. It is believed Murdoch, who set up a private investment fund after resigning from News Corporation, will become the newly-privatised vehicle’s Executive Chairman. He has raised the capital to fund the deal outside News Corp, which owns the company that publishes national daily The Australian. As part of the deal, Murdoch and CMH’s current deputy chairman James Packer are expected to each take a 50 per cent stake in a joint venture vehicle to run the company. The deal marks yet another step by Packer away from the media empire that was long the hallmar...

James Packer: Not Australia?s Richest Man anymore.
2007-12-28 11:37:00
I regret not having reporting on James Packer before. Of all the richest men of a specific country, Australia?s former Richest Man used to be one of my favourites. Just look at this guy: If you see him, you would think he?s the bodyguard to a billionaire, not one himself.James Packer inherited his roughly $5 Billion fortune from his father, Kerry Packer who passed away in 2005. In Aussie Billionaire-style, the Packer empire comprises of a media and entertainment empire. James took over from his father and become one of the youngest billionaires in the world. He recently made headlines with allegations of acts fraud in his company, but direct links to him and his management was never proven.Today James Packer has his sights squared on Las Vegas and Macau (China?s Las Vegas). He was reported to looking at buying a $1.8 Billion stake in one of the Vegas Strip?s most popular Casinos. But? today the news came that Andrew Forrest (left), billionaire founder of Fortesque Metals Group Ltd ha...

Relive the Packer pain: Defense
2007-10-15 22:24:00
Not an accurate title given that our defense was actually quite brilliant. One way of putting it was that Brett Favre had an "off day". Or else you could just own up and say we had an outstanding day, defensively. By the numbers: Green Bay managed just 13 first downs and was 3/12 on 3rd for 23%. Only the San Fransisco 49ers approach that level of inept on 3rd down for the season. Green Bay was way below average against our defense, now at a 41% conversion rate for the season. When I said yesterday that we squandered some great defense, I wasn't kidding; we out played the Packers by nearly 80 yards. We won the time of possession and weren't decimated in turnovers, losing just 3-2. They gained less than 4 yards per offensive play, which is pathetic. Predictably they couldn't run the ball (56 net yards) but surprisingly they couldn't pass either (150 net yards). Despite dropping more passes than he caught, I'd just as soon reward Sean Taylor for being in great position on the oppo...
