Earmarks for the bailout?

Gov. Palin Requested Almost $1 BILLION in Earmarks: AP - No Kidding
2008-09-09 07:56:00
Folks, the lies and tall tales told by Alaska Governor and GOP VP Candidate Sarah Palin have grown bigger and bigger.  But this one's huge.  And I mean to the tune of nearly one billion dollars. According to the Associated Press, Palin has requested $750 million in earmarks during her short terms as Alaska's Governor.  For just 670,000 people in that state, that comes to $1,119 for each Alaska Resident. Earlier, I looked at this from a "per-day" perspective and came to the number of $853,623 per day.  But that was with just $576 million in requests.  This AP-estimate brings that number to $1,875,000 per day. That's almost $2 million per day.  In addition to this news, the Washington Post charges that Palin used state money simply for nights spent at home.  I suspect that money went to the care and feeding of her four kids and I don't write that to be funny at all.  The question is, is a $125,000 salary enough for a family of that size...

Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) has requested nearly $2.3 billion in federal earmarks for 2009, almost three times the largest amount received by a single senator this year. The Democratic presidential candidate?s staggering request comes at a time when Congress remains engaged in a heated debate over spending federal dollars on parochial projects. It also has gained traction on the campaign trail. Presumptive GOP nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), a longtime foe of earmarks, has called for eliminating what he dubs ?wasteful Washington spending.? Democratic front-runner Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) has spurned earmarks, seeking no funds for pet projects in the upcoming fiscal year. John McCain Lying About "Earmarks" - He's Got Several Of Them
2008-02-14 21:03:00
Today on Fox News -- I was watching while writing about Kofi Bonner -- John McCain attacked Senator Barack Obama for taking earmarks, even though Obama has reported his earmarks. But in the process, McCain claimed that he has never asked for one and has stated "And I?m proud to tell you, Chris, in 24 years as a member of Congress, I have never asked for nor received a single earmark or pork barrel project for my state and I guarantee you I?ll veto those bills. I?ll ask for the line item veto and I?ll veto them and I?ll make the authors of them famous."Well, McCain should start by making himself famous. According to Think Progress.org , McCain asked for and got them twice. Think Progress writes that..."McCain?s claim is false. Richard Viguerie on Bush and Earmarks: Whoop-De-Doo
2008-01-30 02:02:00
Received Via EmailRichard Viguerie on Bush and Earmarks: Whoop-De-Doo (Manassas, Virginia) Richard A. Viguerie, issued the following statement regarding President Bush’s policy announced in the State of the Union address regarding earmarks in appropriations bills: Instead of killing the earmarks in last year’s huge omnibus appropriations bill, President Bush will leave in place all of the 11,735 earmarks, totaling $16.9 billion. And instead of saying that he would veto any bill containing earmarks, Bush said he would veto legislation that did not reduce the earmarks by 50 percent. Whoop-de-doo. President Reagan vetoed the Highway Bill in 1987 because it contained 121 earmarks. But President Bush has given the go-ahead to 5,867 earmarks--half the current number. Obviously, the Republican team in the White House and Congress has abandoned all pretense of governing as fiscal conservatives. “President Bush came into office sounding like a conservative Republican. He is leaving sound...

It?s all about the earmarks
2008-01-23 21:18:00
For months now, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) has been at the forefront of a campaign to crack down on earmarks. He has used the issue to keep fiscal conservatives happy and keep himself in the national dialogue. “It’s time to change the culture of corruption in Washington and it begins by eliminating earmarks,” he recently wrote in a guest post on the popular blog Captain’s Quarters. “But I can’t do it alone. It’s time to take the fight to the ground.” The success of DeMint’s call to action reverberated with Rep. Gresham Barrett (R-S.C.), who this week began his own crusade against wasteful spending. ?The economy is the number one issue and how we deal with the budget process has been a concern of mine since going to Washington,? Barrett told the Anderson Independent Mail Tuesday. ?I do not believe all earmarks are bad, I do believe that the system as it exists is broken and out of control.? And now it appears the state legislatu...
Murtha's Earmarks: Reason Enough To Vote for LtCol. Russell
2008-01-16 17:24:00
Although a couple days old, it's worth bringing up as it didn't seem to get much coverage. Especially at a time when exorbitant spending is rampant. But that hasn't stopped some politicians from running wild with their "earmarks."Case in point, John Murtha. Mister "our soldiers are mass murderers," even though those in question had been exonerated. Murtha looks to be in the lead at the moment with the most money earmarked for his district. $162 million so far, to be exact.NewsMax had a little bit about this in their article on Jan. 14th, 2008 titled "Murtha Led Congress in Earmarks." I guess being in charge of the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee gives you permission to secure funds for a bunch of your contributors. 26 of them in all total.Definitely makes Lt. Col. William Russell look like the better choice. I tapped out an article about him a short while back. Looking at the Earmarks Found in the Omnibus Bill
2007-12-31 19:25:00
I mentioned the omnibus bill in my article today. Donald Lambro takes a look at the earmarks found in that monster: This is just a sampling of the 11,331 “earmarks” (a 426 percent increase over last year) that this Congress snuck into its annual appropriations bills and accompanying reports for fiscal year 2008 — nearly 10,000 of them in the omnibus bill alone. Want more? – $700,000 for a bike trail in Minnesota. – $200,000 for a post office museum in downtown Las Vegas. – $1 million for a river walk in Massachusetts. – $150,000 for the Louis Armstrong Museum in Queens, N.Y. – $200,000 for the Hunting and Fishing Museum in Pennsylvania. – $113,000 for rodent control in Alaska. – $4 million for a Beverly Hills veterans’ park. – $37,000 for the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. – $8.8 million for the Rural Domestic Preparedness Consortium at Eastern Kentucky University. – $2.4 million for renovat...

Hillary Clinton's Trading Of Money From Developers For Bill "Earmarks" Draw
2007-12-10 21:34:00
It's about time this matter was given the attention it so needed. YRACUSE, N.Y. ? It's a real estate developer's sugar-plum dream: a mega-shopping mall complete with 10 Broadway-style theaters, an indoor river, a Tuscan village and a 39-story luxury hotel sheathed in green solar panels shaped like giant blades of grass. Plus as much as $1 billion in government-backed financing, thanks in part to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. Not everyone thinks the plan, known as Destiny USA and still in the early bulldozer stage, is a good idea. Many on the Syracuse City Council consider its tax breaks a waste of public money. Others fear it could damage the struggling downtown area. Others question whether all its dazzling features will ever be built. One thing is clear, however: Destiny is a classic example of how New York's junior senator has embraced old-fashioned pork-barrel politics, first to build power in the state, then to extend it nationwide as she becomes a leading candidate for the De...
