Anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric diagnosis or mental illness in which a person has an intense fear of gaining weight and have a distorted view about their weight and body shape. Anorexia sufferers, anorexics, either refuse to eat or eat in such small amounts that they become malnourished. Anorexics will use all kinds of methods to lose weight such as starvation, vomiting, purging, excessive dieting and strenuous exercise regimes. They believe themselves to be fat even though their weight is so low that their health or even lives are in danger.Anorexics are obsessed with food, and they will go to extreme lengths to avoid gaining weight. Many are so focused on their outward appearance that they have little awareness of the internal sensations such as hunger or fullness.Ironically, some anorexics become excellent cooks and will serve exquisite dinners that they themselves refuse to touch. They will take over food shopping or preparation for the family. At meals, they may cut their fo...

Relative reinforcing value of exercise in inpatients with anorexia nervosa:
2007-05-14 12:05:00
This study sought to quantify, among patients hospitalized for the treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN), the reinforcing value of exercise, defined as the amount of work a patient would expend for the opportunity to exercise.Sixteen inpatients with AN performed a computerized progressive ratio (PR) task for the opportunity to exercise for either 15 or 30 min, or a monetary voucher. Exercise “breakpoint” was calculated and compared with clinical measures.Patients performed an average of 1134.4 (–í¬Ī751.2) button presses for exercise. Exercise breakpoint was significantly correlated with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI; r = .728, p = .001), and there was a trend toward a correlation with the Commitment to Exercise Scale (CES; Davis, 1993; r = .490, p = .054).Results support the feasibility and potential utility of this novel application of the PR task to quantify the reinforcing value of exercise in AN. The association between exercise and depression is consistent with so...

Is Anorexia Nervosa a Delusional Disorder? An Assessment of Eating Beliefs
2007-04-06 15:29:00
Abstract: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious mental illness, characterized in part by intense and irrational beliefs about shape and weight, including fear of gaining weight. Although these beliefs are considered to be a diagnostic criterion for the illness, they have not been systematically characterized. This study used the Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale (BABS) to identify the dominant belief that interfered with eating in a sample of underweight patients with AN (N = 25). The degree of insight was assessed quantitatively. The majority of participants (68%) spontaneously reported a dominant belief consistent with fear of gaining weight or becoming fat. Twenty percent of patients were categorized as delusional. The total score on the BABS was significantly correlated with the drive-for-thinness subscale of the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI) (r = 0.41, p = 0.04), but did not correlate with overall measures of AN severity (body mass index [BMI], duration of illness, lowest BMI, ...

The trigger for Anorexia Nervosa may lie in our genes!
2007-02-21 16:15:00
ABC News: A researcher at a Tulsa clinic says a decade-long study into anorexia nervosa is beginning to reveal that those who suffer from the disease might have a genetic predisposition toward it. The study, known as the Genetics of Anorexia Nervosa collaboration, is being done in eight cities in North America, including Tulsa, and two European cities. It is funded by the National Institutes of Health. Researcher Craig Johnson said that if a person has a family member who has had anorexia nervosa, she or he is 12 times more at risk of developing the illness. "Genetics loads the gun. Environment pulls the trigger," said Johnson, the director of the eating disorders unit at Laureate Psychiatric Hospital in Tulsa and one of the study's principal researchers.Tulsa, other North American cities involved in the study are Pittsburgh, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Toronto and Fargo, N.D. In Europe, London and Munich, Germany, are a part of the study. Johnson said researche...

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that is characterized by low body weight and body image distortion. Individuals suffering from this disease control body weight by voluntary starvation, purging vomiting, excessive exercise, or other weight control measures, such as diet pills or diuretic drugs. This disease primarily affects young adolescent girls in the western world and has one of the highest mortality rates of any psychiatric condition, with approximately 10% of people diagnosed with the condition eventually dying due to related factors. This video is made with an intention to create awareness on this disease and to show how this disease could ruin one?s lifestyle.
Anorexia Nervosa Associated Features and Disorders
2006-11-20 08:18:03
Associated descriptive features and mental disorders. When seriously underweight, many individuals with Anorexia Nervosa manifest depressive symptoms such as depressed mood, social withdrawal, irritability, insomnia, and diminished interest in sex. Such individuals may have symptomatic presentations that meet criteria for Major Depressive Disorder. Because these features are also observed in individuals without Anorexia Nervosa who are undergoing starvation, many of the depressive features may be secondary to the physiological sequelae of semistarvation. Symptoms of mood disturbance must therefore be reassessed after partial or complete weight restoration. Obsessive-compulsive features, both related and unrelated to food, are often prominent. Most individuals with Anorexia Nervosa are preoccupied with thoughts of food. Some collect recipes or hoard food. Observations of behaviors associated with other forms of starvation suggest that obsessions and compulsions related to food may ...
Anorexia Nervosa Prevalence
2006-11-20 08:18:03
The lifetime prevalence of Anorexia Nervosa among females is approximately 0.5%. Individuals who are subthreshold for the disorder (i.e., with Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified) are more commonly encountered. The prevalence of Anorexia Nervosa among males is approximately one-tenth that among females. The incidence of Anorexia Nervosa appears to have increased in recent decades.
Anorexia Nervosa Differential Diagnosis
2006-11-20 08:18:03
Other possible causes of significant weight loss should be considered in the differential diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa, especially when the presenting features are atypical (such as an onset of illness after age 40 years). In general medical conditions (e.g., gastrointestinal disease, brain tumors, occult malignancies, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome [AIDS]), serious weight loss may occur, but individuals with such disorders usually do not have a distorted body image and a desire for further weight loss. The superior mesenteric artery syndrome (characterized by postprandial vomiting secondary to intermittent gastric outlet obstruction) should be distinguished from Anorexia Nervosa, although this syndrome may sometimes develop in individuals with Anorexia Nervosa because of their emaciation. In Major Depressive Disorder, severe weight loss may occur, but most individuals with Major Depressive Disorder do not have a desire for excessive weight loss or excessive fear of gaining...
