Seabulk energy at Gaveston anchorage
2008-12-20 13:46:00
Things are looking up today. The sun has come out and the fog seems to be dissipating. I can now actually see the mast and funnel of “Seabulk Energy” a mile off as the sun works on this fog from the top down. As I came down from the bridge, the pilots were opening up the Houston Ship channel and taking in the ships in.   I would be lying if I said that we weren’t enjoying the anchorage. But the problem with anchorages is that you can’t make fresh water and your provisions start running out. So it will be great if things start moving up in the channel and we can get some fresh veggies on our plates.
2008-2009 Winter Activities in Anchorage
2008-09-25 10:00:00
I frequently get emails from people planning trips to Anchorage asking what kinds of things there are to do--here's a list to answer that question. Hope you don't mind the cold! Unless otherwise stated these activities are free.1. Go ice fishing. The 21st Annual Ice Fishing Jamboree out at Jewel Lake is free with poles, warm-up tents and all equipment provided--perfect for kids and adults alike. My own children love it. The event is usually held in the middle of December though last winter it was pushed back to January from lack of ice. As of yet no 2008 date has been set, check this page for more details closer to December.2. Go snow tubing at Alyeska Resort. The Glacier Tubing Park offers sledding on Mt. Alyeska, $15 for adults and $10 for kids, in 1 1/2 hour sessions starting at 10:00am. Beware that children must be 42" to ride. Inner tubes are provided.3. Ice skate at Westchester Lagoon. Once the ice is declared thick enough it will be maintained for skating all winter...

This is the post where I play tour guide, taking you on a virtual tour of Anchorage and some of the things you could expect to see here. The only thing missing in the pictures are the bears. Did you hear? We've been overrun lately, with four attacks in the city this summer and last week someone hit a 700 pound grizzly with their car. On a four lane street downtown in front of Cal Worthington Ford. Crazy.1. Cuddy Park is in midtown Anchorage and here in the picture you can see a few of the buildings in the area--one of them is where Andrew used to work before he started his new job a year or so ago. Gosh I make it sound like he's working for the CIA or something. "There's an unnamed building which I can't point out where he used to work for an undisclosed corporation before transferring to another more discreet and unrevealed company." You'll never find him, never. Anyway, I love this new park that has gone in behind the Loussac library, there are trails and a bridge and d...

Anchorage by Air
2008-07-22 10:01:00
I flew into Anchorage at midnight on Sunday and took this picture as we came over Fire Island on the final approach. The night was a little darker than it should be with all those clouds--you can't even see the mountains because of them--but it gives you an idea of how bright it can be at midnight. The flight was uncommonly comfortable and relaxing and as a bonus I watched a DVD that I'd recommend you see. Flawless, starring Demi Moore and Michael Caine, is a 60s-tribute heist movie with class and suspense. It's not a typical action movie like The Italian Job but the lighting, set design and acting all create a terrific sense of "what's going to happen next?"I don't know how it got a PG-13 rating unless it's because Demi smokes in nearly every scene because it's clean enough to be rated G. I'd give it an "A"--but considering how I love Michael Caine that's no surprise.Sponsored by The Fine Art of Family--Beautiful jewelry by designer Monica Rich KosannIf you liked this p...

Winterizing in Anchorage
2007-09-27 16:00:00
Before I get into this week's list, which may or may not be exciting depending on how you feel about compost, I have to point out that I haven't done ANY of the items on this list. Why not? Well Lillian decided it was a good time to get sick and when she does sick, she does it good. Apparently the doctor believes she has viral meningitis, as opposed to bacterial meningitis which is the especially nasty kind, and she's been laid up for going on a week now. High fever, low spirits, highly contagious which means I've been stuck in the sick room nursing my baby and worrying until she shows signs of improvement--what are the chances she'll get better in time for me to go to Bouchercon this week? Two years I've waited to go to that conference and that's the week she decides to get sick.In an unrelated news item, and to the disillusionment of anyone who might have thought I had any kind of cool going on, here's a story for you: I was getting ready for bed two nights ago and wa...

What many people do not know is that successful foreclosure investing requires the use of Anchorage foreclosure listings. Here are the basic reasons for this.
Ship Creek in Anchorage, Alaska
2007-09-03 16:00:00
It's been a habit for Andrew and I to occasionally reward our children with special individual activity nights. It happens once about every six or seven months and part of the fun is that the child gets to decide what we'll do during our few hours together. We've gone to movies (I think that was how Andrew was trapped into seeing The Princess Diaries), to dinner, bowling, swimming, Discovery Zone and Tastee Freeze. Have I ever mentioned our theme song for Tastee Freeze? We made up this song that's just brilliant and one of these days the Tastee Freeze people are going to get wind of it and we'll be famous, the next spokesperson or spokes-family or something like that. But where was I?Oh yes, Date Nights. So with four children it can be a month-long affair, with one child every Friday night but it's fun to spend some one-on-one time with each of them. Whenever we get one of our kids alone they're always well-behaved. Always. What is it about having siblings or other adul...

Norfolk Anchorage
2007-08-29 19:49:00
GPS : 39 06 N, 076 14W Norfolk anchorage is not really a very busy place. If you come from the major shipping lanes like the Malacca Straits and the English Channel, you would actually think it a bit deserted. The only things other then a few Container ships that keepmoving to & fro are the Naval Ships from The Norfolk Naval Base. Yesterday I had shown you the Princess I riding to her anchor. On the other side were rows of Aircraft carriers (I counted six!) being refitted. I even spotted the aircraft carrier thathad interfered with the movements of ships the other day. All it sported was a solitary & sad looking plane with no one for company. In the other picture, you see the Warship 67 coming in the channel being escorted by her Tugs. I chose this picture because you see the Aircraft carrier in the background, & you can even see the sailors lined up on the deck. I'm not sure why all thesailors are required to line up on deck whenever a Naval vessel comes to port, ...
Art in Anchorage, Alaska
2007-08-16 16:00:00
Because Anchorage is a stopping spot between Asia and North America there's a larger arts and cultural element than you would normally find in a city this size. Here's a tour of my favorite pieces of outdoor art around town--things that beautify the city and make us look a little classier than we actually are. You can click on any photo to see it enlarged.1. Fishing poles. Located on the overpass on 15th Avenue downtown these fishing poles become hanging baskets each summer. Form following function--I love it!2. Wyland mural. Painted on the side of J.C. Penneys downtown it was created by Wyland who's chosen to do what has worked for Michaelangelo, Raphael and Cher and go by only his first name. He came to town as the first stop on his "Whaling Wall Tour" in 1994 (you can see the other murals here) so I'm including it for old time's sake. It's not really my style of art but my boys love the whales. For 500 bonus points, can you name the kind of whale? I'm the mother...

No Running of the Jew in Anchorage
2007-06-20 09:54:00
Since Jews in sports seem to be a popular topic in the blogosphere this week, I figured I would put one more story out there. This year's Anchorage regional cross country meet is currently schedule to take place on Yom Kippur. It's the third straight year the meet has been on a major Jewish holiday and people are not happy about it. A debate is currently going on about whether or not the meet should be moved. On one side is the school superintendent, who says she would have stopped the meet from being scheduled on Yom Kippur---if she'd known about it. In the past she advised that events not be held on important Christian, Jewish, Russian Orthodox, Muslim and other faiths' holidays, and she wants the cross country meet moved. On the other side is Gary Matthews, the Alaska School Activities Association Executive Director. Matthews believes the meet shouldn't be moved for religious holidays because if they move it for one religion they would have to accommodate many other relig...
Alaska Fishing Charter - Seward in Anchorage
2007-06-11 12:23:00
My Ice Fishing Secrets. Earn 40% people download it and pay. Anchorage holds the title as the largest city in Alaska, perhaps the most frequently-visited tourist destination. Just 126 miles south of Anchorage, you can discover the cultural and historical mines of the city enriched with scenic landscapes of Seward. The winter season opens for unique activities such as dog sledding and alpine skiing while during the summer, it is most popular for hunting in the wild, sightseeing, arctic biking, and of course, sports fishing. World’s best sport fishers come to Seward in high spirits of catching the biggest salmon or the halibut as their preys while they take pride as the predators of the sea. More so, tourists are enticed with the mild and soothing aura of the town that is almost captivating and also fitting for fishing trips. Boat charters are familiar sights often bobbing from most waters of the land. It is home to some of the biggest salmon or halibut in the world. Th...
Need Some Help in Anchorage? Here Are My Picks
2007-05-31 16:00:00
Anchorage is a nice size, big enough to find what you need, small enough to be familiar with what's available. For those who may find yourself in Anchorage someday (we get our share of tourists each summer) here is a list of some great goods and services I'd recommend:1. Need a sandwich shop? I'd recommend The Perfect Cup at the Dimond Center, I dream about their avocado/bacon sandwich--if ethnic food is your thing you should consider Milano's on Arctic and 36th, they have terrific gyros and steak and cheese sandwiches.2. Need a photographer? Stanton Photography, definitely the best. All of his pictures are beautiful.3. Need a restaurant? South Side Bistro on Huffman. I'd recommend the cream of sundried tomato soup with the chevre salad and the raspberry creme brulee for dessert and you could always order more and take it home . . .4. Need a dentist? James Nichols, D.D.S or Russell Morrell, D.D.S. I know over a dozen good dentists, but these two I'd highly recommend...

Chicks at the Imaginarium in Anchorage
2007-05-08 16:00:00
What is it about babies that is so appealing? I'm not much of an animal person, they make me a little nervous, but even I'll admit that anything in baby form is adorable. Crocodiles, armadillos, rats, they're all cute when they're tiny.Lillian's been bugging me for a while to take her downtown to the Imaginarium so she could see the annual chick exhibit where children can hold the newly hatched chickens, learn about the wonders of nature and then bug their parents about letting them have a chicken for a pet.Not being Supermom, I put off the trip until one morning I realized that the exhibit might be gone because--I have it on good authority--chicks eventually grow up and become chickens. I was afraid we'd missed the chicks. But luck was with me and the minute we were through the doors Lillian pointed to the display you see pictured above and said, "MOM! LOOK! There's a mommy laying her eggs right now!" I hated to burst her bubble by telling her that no, that mommy loon ...

You've come to appreciate the smell of break-up season and that lovely rotting-putrid smell that means spring is coming.7. You have at least one neighbor who owns more than three dogs.8. You think formal wear includes, but is not limited to, denim and flannel.9. Democrat or Republican, you'd open ANWR with your own backhoe if they'd just give you a chance.10. You're praying for global warming.11. Fall cleaning means changing the aluminum foil out of the windows.12. You can id...
