Nightly Ramble: Big Airliner Edition
2009-04-28 22:02:00
Welcome, one and all to the most intense nightly read on the sphere: The BitsBlog Nightly Ramble . This is the “Big Airliner” Edition AF One flies over NYC, Obama crashes: Rumors about the BitsBlog jet being the one circling Southern Manhattan aside, we’re told that Air Force One was being flown over NYC for a photo op. Just taking their word for this, for the moment, (Always a dangerous proposition) I can’t wait to see what the photos get used to promote, can you? I mean, can you imagine how successful those photos will be for  promoting anything? And forgive me that I find annoying the FAA was hiding behind it’s regulations… supposedly wouldn’t tell us what was what on a cloud of secrecy. There’s something about this that smells of arrogance of the first order.  In other words, Obama. Can’t wait to see his approval numbers in NYC now… What about photoshop? OK, look, I can fully understand why Obama would want foota...

Arlen Specter Bolts for the ‘rats
2009-04-28 19:03:00
Senator Arlen Specter , (U - Scotland) has made if official.  He will caucus with the Democrats and seek re-electiion as a Democrat. Chris Cillizza, Washington Post: Specter To Switch Parties Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter will switch his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat and announced today that he will run in 2010 as a Democrat, according to a statement he released this morning. Specter’s decision would give Democrats a 60 seat filibuster proof majority in the Senate assuming Democrat Al Franken is eventually sworn in as the next senator from Minnesota. (Former senator Norm Coleman is appealing Franken’s victory in the state Supreme Court.) For the record, we second Michelle: Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Now Senator Scottish Law is Dirty Harry Reid’s problem.    Good luck Harry. Update:(Eric) Well, look, he was never far off being a Democrat in any event, as has been widely observed.  In the end, this was the ultimate act of p...

Obama Intent on Bankrupting Economy to Fix Imaginary Problem
2009-04-28 13:42:00
Doctor Tim Ball, Canada Free Press: The Issue The US Congress is currently discussing the Obama climate change strategy and Cap and Trade. One part of the plan says, “Implement an economy-wide cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050.” The term “greenhouse gas emissions” is either deliberately misleading or indicates complete ignorance of the science, or both. Given the disaster that has been the one first hundred days, and the shear incompetence of Obama’s cabinet officials, like Tim Geitner, Hillary Clinton, Eric Holder and Jannet “Bitch” Napolitano, it is almost possible to believe that the Obama administration is so stupid to actually believe in anthropogenic global warming, but even the one is  not quite that stupid. Rather as Doctor Krauthammer has suggested, the Obama administration is pushing the failed theory of anthropogenic global warming to finance the Obama social engineering objective,  stat...

Welcome, one and all to the most intense nightly read anywhere on the sphere… The BitsBlog Nightly Ramble This is the LightHouse Edition Mother’s day alert:  First of all, let’s take time out for this important message: You do know Mother’s day is this coming Sunday, right? Yeah. You’re welcome. Fur Flying: Lots of fur flying from my Pajamas Media piece posted earlier today, and that’s pretty much as I expected. I suspect I may have snarked the comment stream into silence, though, earlier today. We’ll see. Better than you: But there’s more in the way of indirect linkage to the points I made in that bit than I ever imagined. Take for example Mark Steyn, who points up in a post at The Corner today: My old editor, Charles Moore, has a piece in the London Telegraph on the 30th anniversary of Mrs Thatcher’s arrival in Downing Street. Very pertinent, as Britain regresses to the basket-case Seventies. But this passage, I think, ha...

The White House: Obamanomics has Failed
2009-04-27 14:05:00
The Barack Obama economic plan, Obamanomics, has failed.  So says  the White House , April 26 (Bloomberg) — The U.S. economy will continue to contract “for some time to come,” said Lawrence Summers, director of the White House National Economic Council. “I expect the economy will continue to decline,” with “sharp declines in employment for quite some time this year,” Summers said today on “Fox News Sunday.” Before Barack Obama enacted his massive intergenerational debt plan,  his so-called Stimulus, we had a weak economy.    Now we both a weak economy and a over a trillion dollars of debt.      We have change but where is the hope. The GOP Rebellion is Already Here
2009-04-27 13:22:00
Ben Smith, and Jon Martin at Politico: There was Sen. John McCain’s daughter and his campaign manager who last week demanded that their fellow Republicans embrace same-sex marriage. Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman – the most devoted modernizer among the party’s 2012 hopefuls – won approving words from New York Times columnist Frank Rich for his call to downplay divisive values issues. The party’s top elected leaders in Congress, meanwhile, spooked by being attacked as the “party of no,” were recasting themselves as a constructive, respectful opposition to a popular president. But outside Washington, the reality is very different. Rank-and-file Republicans remain, by all indications, staunchly conservative, and they appear to have no desire to moderate their views. GOP activists and operatives say they hear intense anger at the White House and at the party’s own leaders on familiar issues – taxes, homosexuality, and immigration. Within the party, conservative group...

Liz Cheney - 1: Norah O’Donnell - 0
2009-04-27 00:57:00
One, I am taking the liberty of editing Patterico , just a wee bit: Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State (and Dick and Lynn Cheney daughter) Liz Cheney rips Norah O’Donnell a new. Two, I second Bill Kristol, Weekly Standard: Of course, everyone’s first choice for president in 2012 is Dick Cheney. But Liz Cheney’s boffo performance yesterday in the lefties’ den, MSNBC, defending sensible interrogation policies in the war on terror, surely puts her in contention for the runner-up position. Three, as to the McCain father and daughter tag team:  One is dumb and the other one is well a  blond. O’Donnell should not feel too bad.  I recall that Lynn ripped Wolf Blitzer a new one as well. Snark of the Day: Sarah Baracuda
2009-04-26 23:05:00
It’s not just the tactic of using Republicans for bipartisan photo-ops, and then cutting them loose before partisan decisions, that irks Obama’s opponents. The new president wasted no time rushing forward with policies and legislation guaranteed to drive Republicans nuts. The first bill he signed into law was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act — a partisan hot-button that drew all of eight Republican supporters in the entire Congress. Then there was the swift reversal of Bush policies on abortion and embryonic-stem-cell research — issues dear to the Republican base Sarah Palin, via Ben Smith, Politico. No tags for this post. US Didn’t Know About Swine Flu Until a Week After Canada Did…
2009-04-26 21:28:00
From the Washington Post: U.S. public health officials did not know about a growing outbreak of swine flu in Mexico until nearly a week after that country started invoking protective measures, and didn’t learn that the deaths were caused by a rare strain of the influenza until after Canadian officials did. The delayed communication occurred as epidemiologists in Southern California were investigating milder cases of the illness that turned out to be caused by the same strain of swine flu as the one in Mexico. In the wake of the 2001 terrorist attacks, the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2003 and the more recent emergence of H5N1 bird flu in Asia, national and local health authorities have done extensive planning for disease outbreaks that could lead to global epidemics, or pandemics. Open and frequent communication between countries and agencies has been a hallmark of that work. Whether delayed communication among the countries has had a practical conse...

Do We Need More of a Reason to Kick the UN Out of the US?
2009-04-26 00:58:00
James at OTB: Manfred Nowak, the U.N.’s special rapporteur on torture, proclaimed yesterday that the United States must prosecute the lawyers who drew up the torture memos and that if we fail to do so it is the duty of other states to step in and bring charges. In my New Atlanticist piece, “UN: United States Must Prosecute Torture Lawyers,” I wonder how the lawyers can be responsible but not President Bush and Attorney General Gonzales. Well, worse, we’re now going to prosecute legal opinion? But look, people, let’s get right down to it. We need to tell these morons to get it out of the sunshine. I mean, the UN? Com’on, people. Ah, yes… the UN. The group that was so instrumental in making so many of its members rich under the table by way of the oil for food program. The organization that was the provider of so many young bodies for U.N. diplomats with a sexual taste for children. People who, by the way, are still being protected by the U.N. instead ...

Censored By CNN, Founding Bloggers Sues
2009-04-25 21:19:00
Founding Bloggers : Yesterday, we officially filed our DMCA counter-notice in the matter of CNN’s censorship of Founding Bloggers’ coverage of the Chicago Tax Day Tea Party. A copy of the counter-notice is available at Ben Sheffner’s blog Copyrights & Campaigns, where he’s been devoting much of his valuable energy toward documenting and publicizing what CNN has tried to do in this case. In his current post on the story, Ben makes the following interesting point: Founding Bloggers could also sue CNN. Section 512(f) of the DMCA allows the target of a takedown notice to seek damages, including costs and attorneys’ fees, against the sender for “knowingly materially misrepresent[ing] … that material or activity is infringing.” While such cases are difficult to win, one court has held that the sender must take into account fair use when deciding whether to issue a takedown notice. Founding Bloggers can also sue for a declaratory judgment, asking a court to issue an ord...
Small World
2009-04-25 16:09:00
Sometimes, the world is a smaller place than we ever imagine it could be. A few years ago, used to work at a bank as an information technology person. (Hence the nickname, ‘BitHead’. I’m a tech, by trade, usually working in some type of computer/technology position.)  Unfortunately the department that I was attached to, closed, and my job was eliminated and I ended up moving on to other things. To this day however, I consider it the best job I ever had. At least, outside of my first love, which was always radio. Still, that’s been 20 years, now since I did that, so…(sigh) Anyway,  in working at that job I discovered how small the world really is.  On a particular Saturday afternoon we had a situation in we were working out where all of the computers in the place needed to be touched for the purpose of installing a new piece of software that could not be installed remotely. Keep in mind; this was the early days of Windows NT with the new user inter...

Gotta love the leftard logic.  It somehow lowers our standing in the world to get Khalid Shaykh Muhammed’s hair wet, but having half a million children die in an acceptable price, from May 12, 1996: Lesley Stahl on U.S. sanctions against Iraq: We have heard that a half million children have died. I mean, that’s more children than died in Hiroshima. And, you know, is the price worth it? Secretary of State Madeleine Albright: I think this is a very hard choice, but the price–we think the price is worth it. Mary Norman, president of Auburn Heritage Association, said she was at her family’s burial plot in Pine Hill Cemetery when Councilman Arthur Dowdell removed the small Confederate flag from her great-grandfather’s grave Thursday afternoon. “He pulled up the flag, snapped it in two and put it in his car,” said Norman, who is white. Obama’s Cheney Or the Tiger
2009-04-25 01:23:00
As Bit rambled: Ignored his advisors: About everyone, including his current CIA director begged Obama not to release those interrogation memos. Guess Soros trumps all that. From R. Jeffrey Smith, Michael D. Shear and Walter Pincus Washington Post: The aides also said they hope the memos’ release will focus public attention on the coldness and sterility of the legal justifications for abusive techniques, with Obama telling reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday that the documents demonstrate that the nation lost its “moral bearings” in the Bush years. A source familiar with White House views said Obama’s advisers are further convinced that letting the public know exactly what the past administration sanctioned will undermine what they see as former vice president Richard B. Cheney ’s effort to “box Obama in” by claiming that the executive order heightened the risk of a terrorist attack. In other words, the debate inside the Obama administrati...

Pataki Sends Solid Conservative Message
2009-04-24 20:39:00
Editor’s note: this is cross posted from The Conservative Reader, where good buddy Art Smith holds court. I asked him to report back to us, and this was the result, posted at his place on the 22nd. George Pataki is a former NY govenor and spurred some interest on the national news with this appearence. I thought I’d pass on Art’s comments since he was there. -E   I attended the event this evening and while George did not make any comments that sounded like “Hey, I want to be your next President”, this was definitely seemed like a pre-exploratory event. He had some great comments about the current state of affairs, and took questions which I also think he answered well. Some in New York (see comments on this post) have speculated about him running for other posts in that state, others have suggested he could be a possible contender for President in 2012. Even if he does not run for anything, he certainly provides a strong sense of some of the things the GOP ne...

Morality? No…
2009-04-24 19:34:00
Clarice Feldman at Pajamas Media nails it cleanly: As the president released the memos, C.I.A. Director Leon Panetta sent a letter to his agents: In releasing these memos, the men and women of the CIA have assurances from both myself, and from Attorney General Holder, that we will protect all who acted reasonably [emphasis supplied] and relied upon legal advice from the Department of Justice that their actions were lawful. The attorney General has assured me that these individuals will not be prosecuted and that the government will stand by them. This can hardly be of much comfort to those agents who realize that the government is now in the hands of those who’d sacrifice whole cities for some naïve notion of a moral high ground, which will make our enemies love us and cease their aggression. Such men are not likely to feel the need to worry much about the lives and safety of those who were tasked to save us and did so honorably and within the bounds of the law when the threat a...

NOW, Germany Gets Concerned

Dave Schuler at OTB: Germany is concerned about the Taliban fighters nearing Pakistan’s Islamabad capital: BERLIN, April 24 (Reuters) - Germany expressed concern on Friday at the advance of Taliban fighters towards Pakistan’s capital and urged the government in Islamabad to take decisive action to ensure the security situation did not deteriorate. Taliban militants have pushed closer to the capital in recent days, vowing to impose their strict version of Islam across the nuclear-armed Muslim state. Earlier this month, Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari signed a regulation imposing Islamic law in the northwestern Swat valley as part of a deal to end Taliban violence. “We are following developments in Pakistan very closely and believe like our partners, that the advance of the Taliban … is worrying,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Andreas Peschke told reporters. How Much Will Cap And Trade Cost You?

A lot, David Freddoso, National Review: But now, John McCormack writes, the MIT profesor admits that he wasn’t counting as a “cost” the higher energy taxes that Obama’s cap-n-trade will make consumers pay. On average, those higher taxes, based on the MIT study, will come to . . . $3,128 per American household.
