Gibbon Experience - huay xai, Lao Peoples Dem Rep
2009-04-04 15:29:00
Jump to the full entry & travel map huay xai, Lao Peoples Dem RepSo we just got back from the Gibbon Experience .  It was amazing and crazy all at once.  We left at about 9 in the morning rode for about 2 hours in the back of a crowded truck to a small store, we got out used the bathroom and then got back in the truck.  We were all kind of wondering at this point where we were headed.  We soon found out that we were going to drive across a small river and into the forest.  It was crazy, it had rained the night before and the muddy roads were pretty slick and we were going up and down hill.  Thank goodness I had taken some Dramamine or else I am sure that I would have been sick.  After an hour of this bumpy off roading, we arrived at a very small village.  From here a guide lead us to the kitchen.  What we were unaware of at the time was that this walk was about an hour and a half and it i...
Spring Educator's Conference starts - Cairo, Egypt

Jump to the full entry & travel map Cairo , Egypt 8:30am was the beginning of the NESA conference at the Conrad Hotel in Cairo.  Vacation over!  Breakfast was the buffet again but this time I ate outside.  The weather was beautiful!  Some were cold but I was in heaven. :-)  After the keynote, we had a coffee break with in the vendor area and then we were off to our first institute that were to be 2 2 hour sections.  I picked the one on "Promoting International Mindedness".  The discussions were interesting as the group discussed how to take that idea of internationalism past the basics of food days and such as a way to celebrate the international body of students we serve.  I enjoyed the discussions as the teachers are from all over the area and had interesting perspectives to offer from personal experience and about their students.Next up was lunch.  We met up with Julie Cox-the former elementary principal at ACS and now in...

Road trip to Belgium - Brugge, West Flanders, Belgium
2009-04-04 15:26:00
Jump to the full entry & travel map Brugge, West Flanders, Belgium Visiting Belgium has been on our list of things to do since we arrived in France. I did a little research on the best things to see, do, and eat and Kyle rented a car. Here's what went down: We left the rainy, foggy valley of the Seine and literally took the highway toward the direction of sunshine. Cruising North toward Etretat (France), we had the darkest of clouds over our shoulders and sun in our eyes. After about an hour or so we arrived at the beach front town of Etretat. A slow-paced town nudged between sun-bleached cliffs and arches that extend into the sea.  The beach is made up of the most eye catching, smooth, sun baked pebbles. I pocketed a handful of my very favorite. We listened as the waves were sucked back to the ocean, a low whistle as the water rushed past the rattling stones.  Back on the road headed to Belgium, we passed by acres of lush farmland. The fie...

Update from Amsterdam - Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands
2009-04-04 15:24:00
Jump to the full entry & travel map Amsterdam , Noord-Holland , Netherlands Hi Everyone!I feel like I have been traveling for so long already. I made it safely and easily to Abby's flat in Islington, London on Thursday night, and the next day we romped around London. First to Abby's favorite area, Portobello Market - kind of like a daily large flea market on a small street - they had everything there including a lot of vintage trinkets and clothes. We bought a bread pudding-cake thing from a street vendor, and made our way to Regents Park. The sun came out and we walked around the immaculate gardens, spring flowers and their smells were everywhere. We rested on a park bench in the sun and we both got a little tan - in London, who would have thought! We were a little nervous about our travel to Amsterdam, so we went back to her flat and got ready and packed and left early for our trip. We had to take the tube to Liverpool station, then a train to Harwich, which is righ...

Suzhou - finally the China of our imagination - Suzhou, Jiangsu, China
2009-04-04 15:22:00
Jump to the full entry & travel map Suzhou , Jiangsu, China Suzhou is the first city in China which we genuinely liked and found magical. Well, of course that's after a very interesting morning we had and is worth relating in detail. To begin with, our ride here from Hangzhou was supposed to be a brief 2 hour bus snoozer, but which turned into a 5 hour circus of confusion. Somewhere along the way, on an off-ramp, the bus came to a halt and we could see a comotion outside. Several of the passengers and the bus driver came out of the bus and started a fist-fight with the driver of a car which was stopped quite close to the bus. We don't know why it happened (maybe someone cut someone else off?), but it lasted several rounds, with the car driver shaking his fist and yelling, and with several people coming and punching and kicking him on at least 3 separate occasions that we could see, before the police came. The bus eventually lumbered on to a closed-off road and there ...

Down below a heavy cocktail of farang high testosterone and hormone levels rule the veins and arteries inside white fleshy bodies dressed in colorfull Hawaii shorts, mostly belonging to middle-aged western men whose ruddy faces carry a constant grin of happiness due no doubt to the petite hard-bodied local ladyfriends holding their huge hairy hands, often not even half their age.Indian tailors stop them in sthe street offering exclusive business suits at ridiculous low prices, s*xy bar girls giggling and secretly hoping it was them holding that fat farang hand. Russian tourists with a big thirst for wodka mingle with Saudies dressed in their long white djelebas. Hawkers constantly on the move from the police offer sticky rice with lemon, roasted chick...

Pre-Valentines trip to Paris - Paris, Île-de-France, France
2009-04-04 15:12:00
Jump to the full entry & travel map Paris , Île-de-France , FranceWe decided to book a mini-break in Paris for the week before Valentine's Day. The prices for hotels and flights are very reasonable in winter and we heard the queues would be short for all the best attractions. We arrived on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. and took the metro from the airport into the city and up to Montmarte. This is an amazing neighbourhood - so perfectly Paris. It is everything I imagined Paris would be - all the cafes and baguette shops and people walking their little dogs. Ahhhh. We found our hotel which was perfectly situated - good access to the metro, Sacre Coeur and lots of cafes, restaurants and nightlife. We didn't waste any time getting out to explore the city. First stop Eifel Tower!

Heading to Nikko - Nikko, Kanto, Japan

Jump to the full entry & travel map Nikko, Kanto , Japan We woke at 4:30, packed our bags, were mutually raped by the 'marksman' like water jet toilets and limped towards Asakusa Tobu Station. After sitting on the platform for 15 minutes and collecting curious stares from equally curious and bemasked commuters (everyone looks like a surgeon playing truant), we realised that the previously irrelavant destination marked upon the carriages in front of us differed from those of three carriages down. Quickly shaking off our blonde moment, we realised that this might be an opportunity to 'get the fuck on the cars marked for Nikko' and get to where we were supposed to be.  The journey to Nikko from Asakusa station only took 2 hours (train ticket costs 1320 Yen in each way and are not covered by the JR Pass). We arrived in Nikko at around 9:...

It features a gigantic ravine, in total about 100 miles long, up to 17 miles wide and in places almost 1,800 feet deep. The Fish River is the longest interior river in Namibia, but its flow in the present is a puny trickle compared with the immense volume of water that poured down its length in ages past. It cuts deep into the plateau which is today dry, stony and sparsely covered with hardy drought resistant plants. We were there at the middle of the day, so the sun was to high for any good pictures.

Hangzhou - Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China
2009-04-04 14:59:00
Jump to the full entry & travel map Hangzhou , Zhejiang, China Hangzhou is one of the oldest tourist sites in China, as much for the Chinese, as for Europeans. Indeed, one of my personal favourites, Marco Polo, visited this city 8 centuries ago and thought it was the most beautiful city he had ever seen. Some Chinese writers thought Hangzhou was Heaven on Earth. Nowadays that city is mostly gone: the historical city torn down, as in the rest of China, by centuries of war and by the Chinese disregard for their own architectural heritage. The city fulfills for the most part the characterless Chinese vision of an American city, plus the obligatory pollution and concentrated high-rise apartment buildings. Fortunately, a special place has escaped  the onslaught of modernity: the West Lake. This is a man-made lake surrounded by gardens and parks amongst which one can f...
