And just when I thought we'd already hit bottom...There's a novel in here somewhere.Nebraska State Senator Sues GodBy NATE JENKINSThe Associated PressSeptember 18, 2007The defendant in a state senator's lawsuit is accused of causing untold death and horror and threatening to cause more still. He can be sued in Douglas County, the legislator claims, because He's everywhere. State Sen. Ernie Chambers sued God last week. Angered by another lawsuit he considers frivolous, Chambers says he's trying to make the point that anybody can file a lawsuit against anybody. Chambers says in his lawsuit that God has made terroristic threats against the senator and his constituents, inspired fear and caused 'widespread death, destruction and terrorization of millions upon millions of the Earth's inhabitants.' The Omaha senator, who skips morning prayers during the legislative session and often criticizes Christians, also says God has caused 'fearsome floods ... horrendous hurricanes, terri...

A double dose of romance and suspense as told by two talented voice actors....Play Dirty by Sandra BrownRead by Victor SlezakI loved this story. It was a true "page turner," but even if Brown's book wasn't a stinker, and even if the characters hadn't kept me interested, I could listen to Victor Slezak read the alphabet backwards and forwards. The man has got THE sexiest voice in audio books. I'm not exaggerating. He makes each character unique with just the slightest hint of vocal inflection. If Slezak is reading a book, it's an autobuy for me. I also like his work in Envy, Hello, Darkness and White Hot.Devil May Cry (A Dark-Hunter Novel, Book 11) by Sherrilyn Kenyon Read by Holter GrahamI've never read a Kenyon novel, but I was looking for new audio books to listen to in the car. Boy am I glad I stumbled across this one. The story was fresh as were the characters and the pacing was spot on. Not only did I find a new author that I like, I also found another great voice actor. ...

WRITERS: Liking and Loving
2007-09-12 07:40:00
I discovered something really fascinating about my writing these past few months....Falling in love with a character may not be for me. Liking and understanding works much better because 'love' makes you blind. You can't see the character's flaws or the flaws in the writing. Your eyes are so full of stars that you're blinded by the light. Objectivity comes by exercising a bit of distance. Not so much where you're not connecting with action or character, but enough that you're not wearing blinders. Not seeing improper motivations, not recognizing wrong plot turns--that kind of stuff. Letting my logical side drive the car while my dewy-eyed inner self (the one who drools over my hero) sits shotgun works best for me. When it was the other way around, I created page after page of nauseating twaddle. I had a tendency to stay too long in my hero's head, going way too deep at improper times. Now I have a better handle on when to move up close and when to pull back because ...

And here I thought the milking the goat story was strange, but this one runs a close second...Accused Mugger Licks Woman's Toes--Associated PressST. PAUL - Police said a man who robbed a woman of her keys and cell phone then took off her shoes and licked her toes. Commander Kevin Casper said the attack was "weird sexual behavior." The 24-year-old woman was leaving work around 1 a.m. Saturday when the 27-year-old man approached her and demanded her keys and phone. After that he removed her shoes. Police say the woman was not hurt. Police arrested the man a few minutes later about four blocks away. The woman identified the suspect and police were able to recover her keys and phone. The man is in custody and has not yet been formally charged.

Netflix vs. Blockbuster
2007-08-30 07:49:00
Anyone who's been reading this blog since I started it will think I've lost what's left of my mind...But here it is. The ugly truth. I have gone back to Netflix . Yes, I know I said I'd rather roast in hell, but that was before Blockbuster screwed me and thousands upon thousands of other customers with Total Access (TA). They gaveth it, and then they tooketh it away. Yes, it's still available, but it's MUCH more expensive. But that's not the worst part. They kepteth it with some, and snatcheth it from others. I know because I have two Blockbuster accounts. One for my kids and one for me. My account didn't get grandfathered in with the new change, but my kid's account did.I knew they were losing money. They only started TA so they could poke Netflix in the eye. The program netted a lot of new subscriptions, but with this new change (and it's extensive) people are bailing on them like it's the Titanic. Whoever did their business planning/marketing needs to be slapped in the...

READERS: It's Fiction ... Okay?

Are you the type of reader who turns into a psycho about a fictional character? You know, say the author of your favorite series takes the plot in a direction you don't agree with, do you become a raving maniac like Kathy Bates in Misery?...Case in point. I've been reading a wonderful YA series (Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse) by Stephanie Meyer. The books are great, so is the writing. Meyer really has a gift. Anyway, there are a number of friendly and not-so-friendly debates going on about Jacob and Edward (two heroes involved in a love triangle). The question is, which guy is better suited for Bella (the heroine)? I responded saying that if I'd been asked the question before Eclipse, I'd have said Edward, hands down. But now, I dunno. For me, I'd have to choose both. But this isn't about me. This is about Bella. :-)I like Jacob a lot and feel he deserves his own book. As for Edward, I sincerely don't believe Bella is mature enough for him. Quite frankly, she annoyed me thro...

WRITERS: The Cross-Genre Difference
2007-08-13 06:50:00
Lately, I've been trying to write romantic horror...Think Johnny Depp's From Hell, or the sci-fi classic, Time After Time with Malcolm McDowell. These days you can mix it up, creating all new sub-genres. Why? Because publishers and readers are tired of the same old same old. Everybody wants "Different." "Innovative." Something they've never seen before. What do you write? And why? Are your stories pure, with no additives (Straight Mystery), or are they sprinkled with just about everything? (Urban Historical Fantasy)
