An Oldie But Goodie For A Romantic Sunday
2007-10-14 06:01:00 Here's one of the sweetest love songs ever written...Singer/songwriter Richard Marx wrote this tune for the love of his life, his wife Cynthia Rhodes.NOW AND FOREVER (by Richard Marx)Whenever I'm weary from the battles that rage in my headYou make sense of madness when my sanity hangs by a threadI lose my way but still you seem to understandNow and forever I will be your man.Sometimes I just hold youToo caught up in me to seeI'm holding a fortune that heaven has given to meI'll try to show you each and every way I canNow and forever I will be your manNow I can rest my worries and always be sureThat I won't be alone anymoreIf I'd only known you were there all the timeAll this timeUntil the day the ocean doesn't touch the sandNow and forever I will be your manNow and forever I will be your man More About: Videos , Music , Romantic , Nostalgia , Sunday
WRITERS: Riddle Me This
2007-10-10 07:50:00 It's the ugliest child. So ugly, many of us hide it where it won't ever see the light of day. Dust bunnies are its closest friends....I'm talking about your first book/story. The one you had the nerve to write. The piece of crap that's not even fit to use as toilet paper. Mine was a vampire romance that was about two hundred pages too long. The pacing sucked, the characters were paper thin. My voice was non-existent. The sentences were all the same length. It had no inherent beauty or uniqueness about it, just tooth-grindingly bad writing.BUT GUESS WHAT? My fondest memories come from the time I spent working on that book! The sheer joy of learning and discovery kept my 'baby' muse happy. I wasn't worried about agents or publishers or slush piles or any of that stuff. I just wanted to write. And I did. Badly, but darn it, the journey was sooooo much fun. I had no idea what I was doing and I didn't care!Do you have a book beneath your bed? An ugly child that wo... Online Contests
2007-10-08 07:53:00 The Good, The Bad and The Ugly...I've entered my share of writing contests, so I'm an obvious fan. But for me, the jury is still out regarding online contests. These are the ones where the Internet community votes on a winner. The prize is usually a publishing contract with one of the sponsors. There's First Chapters, The Next Great Crime Novelist, Amazon's Breakthrough Novel Award and Project Publish to name a few. Victoria Strauss at Writer Beware brought the topic up recently in a post titled, The New Fad In Publishing. Here's an excerpt: "...I have general problems with the methodology of people's choice-style awards applied to books, where voting is conducted based only on excerpts."Poddy Mouth also weighed in with some great observations as well. Some writers on Writers.net had their say too.To Strauss' point, it could be argued that all contests are a type of 'people's choice award,' with the traditional ones limiting that 'choice' to three or four preselect... The police report says 40-year-old Johnna Briggs pointed the gun at other students getting off the bus and said, "Does anyone have something to say?" As for the front, we've shown him where the property line is. I think he's doing it just to peeve us. Either that, or he's got memory problems. Perhaps he needs a tiny reminder. WRITERS & READERS: If you could pick?
2007-10-01 07:22:00 Is there a fiction trend you'd like to see hit the publishing radar? IOW, what genres do you wish would become popular again? Also, what are you absolutely sick of reading?...If I had my way I'd see more hip romantic YA books that are primarily from a male POV. The fact that I'm writing one is moot. I just think the world has enough self-absorbed teenage girl books. What about the guys? Aren't they just as interesting and self-absorbed? Aren't they just as capable of falling head over heels in like ... or even love? Look, I know there are male POV YA books out there, but with a romantic plot? Let's just say the pickin's are rather slim. The vast majority--and I mean VAST--are female centered. Don't tell me girls just want to read about girls. That's nonsense. They said the same thing back in the '80s when female POV was the standard for romance. Now you can't keep women away from the hero's head. Ooops. That didn't come out right, did it? ROFLMAO! I mean, women (AND GI... More About: Rants , Books , Readers , Publishing , Romance
BRITNEY SPEARS: The Saga Continues
2007-10-01 07:00:00 I am seriously concerned that she's headed down the same road as Anna Nicole.LOS ANGELES - Britney Spears was ordered Monday to surrender custody of her children to ex-husband Kevin Federline....Last month, [Superior Court Judge Scott M. Gordon] said Spears engaged in "habitual, frequent and continuous use of controlled substances and alcohol." He ordered the pop star to undergo random drug and alcohol testing twice a week as part of her ongoing custody dispute with Federline....Since Spears became single, her troubles have played out in the tabloids. First she was photographed at various Hollywood hotspots partying with Paris Hilton. Some photos captured Spears without panties. Then Spears shaved her head, beat a car with an umbrella and ended up spending a month in rehab. An MTV Video Music Awards performance last month meant to herald her comeback was universally panned. The following week, Spears' management firm dropped her and her divorce lawyer resigned. She then was char... More About: Celebrities , Scandals , Showbiz

WRITERS: Book covers ... again
2007-09-28 07:22:00 This time let's do something different...If you were allowed to design it, what would the book cover in your current opus look like?Mine would be a field of marigolds, the sun blazing above a luminous pond that's just off to the side. The center piece is an old, gnarled, yet beautiful oak tree. The kind that shelters. My hero and heroine would be standing (facing each other) beneath it in silhouette, holding each other's hands. The color scheme would include tans, greens, golds, blues and browns. What about you? Can you describe your book cover? More About: Books , Writing , Book , Writers , Covers
Jury Duty
2007-09-28 06:50:00 NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...I got the notice today. They said if I fail to appear they could charge me with a thousand dollar fine and/or up to six months in jail. But guess what? I don't wanna do jury duty. I just don't! Standing in judgement of a total stranger is not my idea of fun. What if he's a psycho who butchered his family and their dog with a chainsaw and the evidence is so overwhleming that we vote to convict him? But---horror of horrors---he escapes from prison all the while plotting revenge against all the jurors? Then I'll be forced to go into the witness protection program, along with DH and the kids. 2007-09-25 07:43:00 Ooooookay. Any thoughts?...Here's the thing. Yeah, I know it's erotica so they want it to look sexy. Nothing wrong with that. Sexy is good. And no doubt both these books are probably page turners. But I read a lot when I'm out. Oftentimes I'm waiting for my son in the car rider's line after school. Waiting at the doctor's office with a room full of nosy patients. Waiting in the check out line. Waiting in the food court at the mall while seated at a table that's surrounded by a sea of people. Long story short, there's no way in hell that I could whip these books out in front of strangers, much less people I know. I mean, I'm still weird about clinch covers with the heaving bosoms and muscle-bound half-naked heroes. What if somebody from the PTA caught me reading it? Or hell, my mother in law. All I'm saying is that I don't think marketing people think about these things when they do their covers. And don't get me started on the title of the first one. O... More About: Books
The Best Rejection EVER

But then, an outrageously astute CP told me it was actually a great rejection. I thought she was just trying to make me feel better, but once I got over myself, I eventually began to see she was right.Dear Tanya,Thank you for submitting XYXYXYXYX. Unfortunately, it's not quite right for us. This decision has nothing to do with the quality of your writing. This is a well written, well thought out story - and you're obviously very talented and professional. The tone was just a little too gritty and the language a little too strong to fit any of our lines. We thought for a moment about asking if you would consider revising this manuscript, but felt if you did, you would be compromising your voice and what makes this story unique. We are sure XYXYXYXYX will find a home elsewhere.Should you finish another manuscript t... More About: Writing , Rejection
