WRITERS: Techniques You Admire
2007-11-01 06:32:00
I just finished reading another awesome book...Requiem for The Devil by Jeri Smith-Ready was a classic tearjerker for sure, and it kept me engaged, which was surprising because I usually prefer more narrative in my fiction. However, her characters were so darned interesting and the dialogue was SO damned good that I couldn't put the book down. I'm not exaggerating when I say this author has one of the BEST ears for dialogue I've ever read. Is there an author whose particular technique you love? Maybe they shine in description, or perhaps their pacing is always dead-on. Or maybe you wish you could write characters as well as they do? What writer do you admire and why? What technique do they shine in?

Caught in the act

This is just too funny for words...This looks like one of those 1970s sex education thingies.First off, how did these two actors do this with a straight face? AND what parent would allow their child to do a gig like this? My daughter did some modeling and photo shoots when she was younger, but I would have NEVER allowed her to do something as silly and embarrassing as this. What the heck were his parents thinking? And that woman playing the mother. Didn't she look creepy as all get out? That boy may never be right in the head again. LOL!

WRITERS & READERS: May/December Romances
2007-10-30 06:21:00
I just finished reading a fabulous book, but...Yeah, there's always a but. Before I begin, I want to stress that the fault lies with ME, not the author. The Object of Love is a TERRIFIC character-driven love/ghost/personal growth story. The protagonists were flesh and bone, the conflict was thick, the ghost story scared the #&$@ out of me, the romance sizzled and the writing was superb. So what's the problem? Like I said, the fault is MINE completely. Here's the thing. The heroine was in her early 40's and the hero was 22. He was also her dead son's best friend. Needless to say, the dead son is none too happy about the romance. ;-)Some of you are saying, so what? Men go for younger women all the time. And I agree, but society has nurtured this disgusting bias inside of me. I have to admit it was a challenge to lock that bias up into the little dark space in my mind where it deserved to be. I had to force myself to open up, to trust the hero and heroine's love. Ag...

Character-Driven vs. Plot-Driven
2007-10-26 07:28:00
It's said you should always write what you like to read...Well, I have a tendency to write character-driven books because I like to delve deep into my protagonist's heads. I notice I also buy character-driven books too, though lately the pickings have been slim. What do you read and write? If you're not a writer, what do you prefer to read? Are you more jazzed by a plot-driven story? Or do you like to get all Freudian with your fiction?

I can't believe the weekend I had...Told in order of occurrence.1. FRIDAY: The thousand dollar TV DH bought last year up and died.2. FRIDAY: A tree branch stabbed--YES, STABBED--into our house during a storm. It's still sticking out of the wall. Now we're going to need a roofer, a drywall guy, and a painter. Now the gas guy is here saying the regulator on the gas meter is broken, which is why we've got gas fumes wafting outside on the left side of the house. Now he's got to call a team in because the entire gas unit may have to ...
