Bollywood living in 3-day weekend era
2008-05-20 07:47:00
It is official now. Bollywood now lives in the era of three-day weekends. Only a few films collect anything to talk about beyond the initial three-day period. The million rupee question is, “Picture ki opening kitni lagi?” And when Yash Raj Films’ (YRF) Tashan failed even to garner a decent opening both on domestic as well as foreign shores, people inside and outside YRF were a worried lot. Budgeted at Rs 40 crore, the movie opened with an initial of 52% in the first week, with collections dropping to 35% in the second week. The failure to reach an agreement with the multiplexes only added to the woes. It is a failure, even Director and CEO, Yash Raj Films, Sanjeev Kohli accepts. “Tashan has been a disappointment commercially, as much was expected from it. But we believe, the audience is the best judge and we accept their verdict,”

From Hollywood to Bollywood and back
2008-05-20 07:45:00
U.S. investors are flooding into India’s entertainment industry even as Indian moguls send money over to Hollywood .   While the credit crunch has stalled private investment in Hollywood films, U.S. financial firms are looking to tap into the 17 percent annual growth enjoyed by the Indian media industry.   India’s Economic Times reported investors including Blackstone, Goldman Sachs and Lehman Brothers have flocked to the Indian industry, while media titans like Viacom, Disney and BBC have partnered up with entertainment companies in a trend that’s expected to continue.   Smaller investors are getting into the game too. Already 34 mutual funds have been set up to take advantage of India’s growing entertainment industry. Two Indian investment funds, Pyramid Saimira and Vistaar Entertainment Ventures, are each launching a fund that invests solely in India’s film industry, also called Bollywood , the Economic Times reported.

Big stars and the small screen
2008-05-20 07:39:00
In the mid-80s Shah Rukh Khan started on the small screen before graduating to Bollywood to become a big star. Now with the advent of satellite television, top stars are cashing in, making a lot more here than in movies and for much less effort. BELIEVE it or not, India’s number one star, Shah Rukh Khan, makes more money from television than from films. He reportedly earned Rs 75 crores (RM57mil) last year from endorsements of various products and services in television ads. This was more than what he made in fees as a Bollywood hero. From endorsing cellular phones to cellular phone service providers, King Khan can be seen marketing cars and cola drinks. And in between those ads, he appears on the small screen anchoring a much-hyped show for which he is paid a humungous amount. The actor who began his career on the small screen back in the mid-80s and successfully graduated to Bollywood to become a household name is now seen more in television commercials than on the big screen.

Blogging slogging Bollywood's newest fad
2008-05-20 07:38:00
Move over, size-zero bimbettes. A new fad has hit B-town. It’s called blogging slogging. A dialogue from some kitschy Bollywood movie comes to mind as I sit to write this article. It says: “kalam(pen) mein talvaar se zyada taakat hoti hai.” Since we are living in technologically advanced times and keyboard has pushed all the kalams into cupboard, this dialogue calls for some updating. And updating themselves to the modern times are Bollywood stars who, after staying away from the most popular Internet fad, have finally given in to the idea of blogging. Not just blogging, they are mixing it with some slogging as well. Many a fan of Aamir Khan were delighted when the otherwise reclusive superstar decided to correspond directly with his fans through his blog on which he shared many personal facts from his struggle to quit smoking to his recovery from hamstring injury. All was well until Aamir unleashed a bombshell with his last blog entry in which he describes a smell...

People still talk about our romantic Kiss
2008-05-20 07:27:00
Now it can be told. The reason Maddy and Vidya look so much in love is Maddy's 2-year old son Vedant. The child bonded so beautifully with Vidya on the sets of Guru that she became a part of Madhavan and his wife Sarita's inner circle. All said and done, it's just an ad. But the chemistry that Vidya Balan and Madhavan share in the ad for a mobile company has spurred movie makers to plan at least a couple of movies with them together. In fact the cellphone company has now decided to put out a series of ads featuring Madhavan and Vidya as a couple connecting emotionally on the phone. Madhavan has been running in and out of Mumbai to complete these ads. Says the busy Southern star, "Initially I was only the brand ambassador for Airtel's southern market. But now they've signed me on for the whole country. And we've shot a series of ads with Vidya and me. For the last one week I've been running in and out Mumbai and Chennai. During the day-time I'm in Chennai shooting for ...

Salman Khan shows 10 Ka Dum
2008-05-20 07:26:00
Watch the barometer rise this summer, as it gets hotter with Salman hitting the tube and getting closer to his fans. For starters, the viewers will get the first glimpse of Salman the superstar as he sizzles and shakes a leg to a specially composed hip hop number… not for his film but an exclusive music video for 10 Ka Dum which marks his debut on television only on Sony Entertainment Television. Rajeev Surti is the choreographer of the music album and musical duo Sajid Wajid has composed the foot-tapping music. It seems like they are keeping their best numbers for their 'Salmanbhai'. The lyrics are written by Jalees Sherwani and Wajid has his voice lent to it, which is not only making Salman dance to the tune but will have the entire nation shaking a leg to this hip hop number. Salman's trademark dancing style to the hip-hop number is going to have his female fans go weak in their knees for sure. Said Sajid of the music director duo, "Salman has been so excited ab...

Ekta Kapoor- Gharwali Baharwali
2008-05-20 07:25:00
Now the reality can be revealed. Even as Ekta Kapoor enters the cluttured realm of reality shows with Kissko Milega Ticket To Bollywood on the fledgling channel 9 X, she's already working on her second reality show, this one on Sony. According to a source, television czarina is now working on a reality show called Gharwali Baharwali. "It'll feature tv stars dancing with their reel and real partners. For example Ronit Roy will be seen waltzing with his wife Neelam and with his screen wife Tulsi (Smriti Irani) from Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Tthi. The idea is to bring the lives of tv stars to the audience in a way that takes them away and brings them closer to the soaps that they are famous for," says a source. In the meanwhile preparations for Kissko Milega Ticket To Bollywood are on full swiing. It's finally been decided that the two wannabes superstars selected from this reality show will work in Ekta-Balajee's 70-crore rupee project directed by Apoorva Lakhia. Say...
Bebo-Saif:Khullam Khulla love
2008-05-17 07:46:00
The Chote Nawab might allege that the media has a deliberate agenda against him and his arm candy Kareena, but you cannot blame them because Saif and Bebo seem to be the flavour of the season. If the onlookers of Zee Cine Awards are to be believed, both Saif and Kareena were all over each other in London. So much so, that there was no dearth of PDA. They could barely keep their hands off each other. They even went as far as requesting the organizers to book them a hotel which was far away from the hotel where the rest of the guests were putting up. Although their Tashan might have failed to sizzle on screen, but surely the off screen chemistry is piping hot and creating a lot of ripples.

Panchvi fail and other Bollywood blog tales
2008-05-17 07:41:00
It's no longer about cold wars. The starry world of Bollywood is busy with caustic combats instead. So Aamir Khan writes a cheeky blog entry describing his smelly dog named Shahrukh while Amitabh Bachchan rates Shah Rukh Khan's new reality show as "Panchvi Fail". Bachchan goes on to compare Panchvi Pass's ratings with his own high-ranking KBC show. Salman Khan is brattish as usual, checking on Akshay Kumar's fee before naming his price. The gloves are off in Bollywood. While yesteryear stars Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor and other antagonists kept their mutual dislike private, today the bitching is out in the open. The change has perhaps to do with Bollywood's changing dynamics. Bachchan has reportedly been paid over Rs 100 crore for his blog, so dishing out controversy is part of the domain, quips an industry watcher. Aamir probably felt that Bachchan was stealing the limelight, so he posted a mischievous comment. Two months ago, Aamir had demoted SRK, calling him the ...

Dog fight: SRK answers Aamir
2008-05-17 07:38:00
The battle of the blogs has just intensified, what with the Taare Zameen Par self-crowned genius and the universally acknowledged clutter-breaker Aamir Khan proclaiming that he has named a dog Shah Rukh Khan. The shocking display of insolent humour has sent shock waves in the otherwise-insulated and unconcerned film industry. Says a very popular character-actor who has worked with both the actors, "I guess the freedom provided by a blog tends to loosen tongues. Amitji has never been known to be as undiplomatic as he's on his blog. Aamir must have thought it's time to increase the odds, what if Amitji's blog gets more eyeballs! Also, his nephew's film is around the corner. During the release of Taare Zameen Par Aamir created a controversy by taking on Amitji and Black. Now for the nephew it's Shah Rukh being called a dog. All I can say is, life's a bitch." Shah Rukh remains characteristically unfazed and humorous in the face of his colleague's uncharitable and tast...

2008-05-17 07:36:00
Post Om Shanti Om (OSO) how has your life changed? All this is very new for me. My father (bandmintom champ Prakash Padukone) was also a celebrity. But we were never exposed to much media coverage. Before I went into the modeling profession I did go into my dad's profession it was the expected thing. I played bandminton at the national level. But I realized my heart was set on modeling. Movies weren't even in my range of vision. But after two years of modeling I started getting film offers I was only 18 then. I didn't want to jump into anything. What took you down south? You mean my Kannada film Aishwarya? I am from Karnataka and it was directed by a young and talented man Indrajit Lankesh. And I was paired with a huge Kannada star Upendra. Did you speak your own lines? Yes I did. I learnt Kannada in school. Farah Khan had already offered me OSO. But we were to shoot a year later. So I did the Kannada film. You remind me of Aishwarya Rai. I'd take that as a compliment. I grew up...

‘Colors', the Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC) of Viacom 18, is preparing for a July debut. It may be the 11th channel in the genre, but Rajesh Kamat, CEO, Colors, the JV between Viacom Inc and Network 18, is confident that his "differentiated" and "disruptive" programming will win viewers. Kamat, 34, should know since he steered Endemol India, the Indian arm of the international television program format major for two years prior to joining Viacom 18. He's also worked for Coca Cola India and Star India. He spoke to Shuchi Bansal on Colors' plans and trends in the GEC segment. Why did you enter the overcrowded Hindi GEC segment, especially since entry costs in the category are prohibitive? Viacom Inc, with MTV, VH1, Nick and Paramount is a $13. 2 billion setup. Between Network 18 and Viacom, we have nine channels. Besides, we are present in print and the online space with websites like jobstreet.com, yatra.com and moneycontrol.com. So we have ...

The merchants of Bollywood!
2008-05-16 08:07:00
Well, the 1973 Rishi-Dimple starrer has a distinction to its credit. It was perhaps the first film to start merchandising its products the hair clips and pins worn by Dimple Kapadia could be bought by fans. The concept of Bollywood merchandising has come a long way since then. The latest film to have marketed its products is Ashutosh Gowariker’s magnum opus Jodhaa Akbar whose main characters would be reproduced as toys by a leading toy maker. Besides toys, other merchandise includes jewellery, coffee mugs, sports items, stationery, curios, mobile ring tones, vehicles, food, beauty products, toiletries, bath items and apparel. The movie credited with popularising merchandising is Sooraj Barjatya’s Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) - the ‘Friend’ cap featured in it sold like hot pancakes. Another Barjatya blockbuster, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun also did brisk business, with Madhuri Dixit’s purple sari becoming a craze. Films that have merchandised successfully of late inc...

Bollywood director plans film on murdered UK girl
2008-05-16 08:05:00
A Bollywood filmmaker plans to make a film about a British teenager murdered at one of Goa’s famed beaches, but a lawyer said the family was afraid the script could deviate from the truth. Scarlett Keeling, a 15-year-old British girl, was raped and murdered at Goa’s Anjuna beach in February, triggering criticism of the police and highlighting the lack of safety for tourists in India. The new film, Rave Party, will have song and dance sequences on Goa’s pristine beaches, and will include a scene depicting the last few minutes of Keeling’s life when police say she was raped and left to die in the shallow waters. “It will be a Bollywood film with a tinge of reality as I want people to come to the theatres and learn from the film,” Prabhakar Shukla, the film’s director told Reuters from Mumbai. Two people have been arrested in the case. One has been released on bail, prompting Fiona MacKeown, mother of the dead teenager, to push for a federal p...

Aamir loves his dog Shahrukh
2008-05-16 08:02:00
In his latest blog, actor Aamir Khan talks about a certain Shahrukh licking his feet. The perfectionist star is in Panchgani, with family and kids. Aamir writes: "I’m sitting under a tree, on the edge of a valley, approximately 5000 feet above sea level. The river Krishna flows far below us snaking its way among the Sahyadri mountains. A cool breeze is blowing, jannat ki hawa (breeze from the heavens), as my mother calls it. Ammi, Ira and Junaid are by my side and we are in the middle of one of our favourite board games ‘Settlers Of Catan’. Shahrukh is licking my feet and I am feeding him biscuits every now and then. What more can I ask for? Now, before you jump to any conclusions let me add that Shahrukh is the name of our dog. And before you jump to any further conclusions let me add that I had nothing to do with naming him. In fact Shahrukh is the dog of the caretakers of our house. When I bought this house it came with the caretakers and their dog! A...

Aishwarya Rai returns to Cannes
2008-05-15 07:57:00
What will Aishwarya Rai wear down the red carpet at this year's Cannes Film Festival? Ever since she arrived by horse drawn carriage, dressed in a stunning yellow dress for the premiere of her film Devdas in 2002, Rai’s annual presence at the festival has added a unique Bollywood hue to the red carpet proceedings. Last year, my heart skipped a beat when Rai arrived decked in a white gown with her new husband Abhishek Bachchan on display. Her choice of apparel has always created waves. In 2003, the Armani-clad Rai was the first Indian actor to sit on the prestigious judges’ panel and the following year, decked in Chopard and a Neeta Lulla skimpy white dress, she made spectators gasp in awe. Black was her colour of choice in 2005 and she arrived hand in hand with fellow L’Oreal brand ambassador Andie MacDowell in 2006. This year Rai will be there again: she is contractually bound by L’Oreal to appear. Rai, hubby Abhishek and father in law, Amitabh Bachchan w...
Nurturing Bollywood's next generation
2008-05-15 07:55:00
When a Mumbai film school asks potential students to prove their tax status, you can be sure that its courses are expensive. But applicants for the Whistling Woods Intl. school, which charges $30,000 for a two-year diploma course in directing, comfortably outnumber the 150 available places. On that count, the school, the $15 million brainchild of Bollywood director-producer Subhash Ghai, is already a success -- even before the first graduation next month. Ghai wanted to build the institute partly as a means of giving back to the industry, partly as a means of grooming talent for his own Mukta Arts production shingle, but mostly because he felt the alternatives were inadequate. "The Film and Television Institute of India (in Pune) taught us about European cinema. But how many of its graduates are names in the industry today?" Ghai asks. "Our USP is that our faculty are active industry professionals." Industry stars who have already taught there include veteran ac...

“Spiderman and Superman and the one with the big ape have eaten into our market; Indian cinema needs to compete,” Amitabh Bachchan has said. Will this rare kiddie film kick-start a new genre in Bollywood? Middle-class couple, Aditya (Shah Rukh Khan) and Anjali (Juhi Chawla) Sharma move into Nath Villa, a Goan mansion with their brattish young son Banku (Aman Siddiqui). Aditya’s job as chief engineer on a cruise ship means that Anjali and Banku are left home alone in what the locals regard as a haunted house. Indeed, it is inhabited by the spirit of Kailash Nath (Amitabh Bachchan) whose attempts to scare the new inhabitants are in vain.

Sophie Choudhury, once VJ and acclaimed singer, has even proved her mettle in acting with a juicy role in Pyar Ke Side Effects. After all, it’s not possible to forget the impact of ‘coffee treat’ episode in that feel-fresh film. The talented damsel is back, again, with a haplessly hyped movie Alibuag. Here is an insight and much more from the actress herself… Q. You are in Sanjay Gupta’s Alibaug. How was it working with Sanjay? A. I know Sanjay Gupta for long. He always used to ask me about what kind of film to cast me in. One day he called me to his office and surprised me offering the character of Nisha in his upcoming film Alibaug. The story, he described me, was astounding and I couldn’t help accepting it. For three hours we had a group narration with other actors. Deepika denies breakup news
2008-05-15 07:34:00
Deepika Padukone has denied rumours of a break-up with actor Ranbir Kapoor. She said they were still very much an item, and were currently "happy" with the relationship. "Yes I have a boyfriend and we are happy," she said during a visit to Dubai as the brand ambassador of a real estate company. Asked about her love life, the 22-year-old actor who has earlier been linked to Indian cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, said as a public figure you had to learn to deal with rumours. "There is always a lot of speculation but that is something you have to deal with. We are together and I refer to him as my boyfriend," she was quoted as saying. Padukone, who made a hugely successful Bollywood debut with director Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om opposite Shah Rukh Khan in 2007, is currently working on Nikhil Advani's Chandni Chowk to China, also starring Akshay Kumar.

Gloss, style and fluff fail Tashan
2008-05-14 09:26:00
Bollywood is smarting under two box-office disasters - Yash Raj Films' star-studded Tashan and Filmkraft's Krazzy 4. Their failure has proved that gloss, style and fluff cannot be a mantra for success without a convincing script. Though still running in cinemas, the poor show of the two films has already caused a combined loss of approximately Rs 400 million to the industry. The loss includes the money forfeited by Yash Raj Films after multiplexes refused to show Tashan for the entire first week of its release following disputes over the percentage of their revenue share of box-office earnings. With recovery from multiplexes amounting to almost more than 50 percent of the total box-office collections of a movie, Tashan bore the brunt most during the crucial week after its release. Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, Tashan had Bollywood's most saleable actor Akshay Kumar along with most sought after pair Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, but still failed to lure the audiences.

Madhuri: Padma Shri is my hard work
2008-05-14 09:00:00
Madhuri Dixit received Padma Shri for her contribution to Indian cinema and the former Bollywood diva says the honour is a result of her hard work and honesty. "It's always a wonderful feeling to have your work honoured. One has worked so hard for so many years. The Padma Shri is a culmination of all my hard work and honesty. I think I'm being honoured for doing my work sincerely," Madhuri said. Madhuri's children are in the US with her in-laws and her parents. "They're all there. I guess my kids are lucky to have three sets of parents. My husband was here with me to share this moment. He left on Sunday," she said. Did Madhuri's children share her excitement about the award? "Not the younger one. He's only three. Too young to understand, but my five-year-old son kept asking me why I was getting this award. I told him it was because I did movies in India for many years. 'You did movies. Why? Why do people call you Dixit?' he asked me.

Bollywood stars tune in to television
2008-05-12 08:13:00
Bollywood is descending on the small screen. Television channels, in their quest to grab eyeballs are forking out big money to attract the top names of the Indian film industry. And it seems to be working, with Bollywood stars realising that they can earn big bucks from the idiot box, sometimes more than what they get from movies. It all began when the magic of Amitabh Bachchan as host for Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) on Star Plus mesmerised audiences across the country. The programme continued with Shah Rukh Khan replacing Bachchan. But now more stars are making a beeline to appear as hosts on TV shows. Salman Khan will hit the tube in June with the game show Dus Ka Dum on Sony Entertainment Television (SET). According to industry experts, Khan is charging Rs 80 lakh for 30 episodes or a cool Rs 24 crore from the programme. That is much more than what he usually charges for a movie around Rs 6 crore to Rs 8 crore per film, and which will take him anywhere from four to six months ...
