Syesha Mercado | Fever
2008-05-14 02:39:00
Syesha Mercado is smart to use her sex appeal as an advantage in the American Idol competition. Of course, the voting population in American Idol’s competition is young girls, so being sexy could be a turnoff to AI voters who could be looking for a safe choice like David Archuleta.  But, it might get votes from guys who wouldn’t mind seeing Syesha Mercado sing in the Top 2 show.  Syesha Mercado is taking a risk depending on who is voting tonight — are lots of young guys or gals watching tonight?  We’ll have to see what happens tomorrow.  I hope it pays off for Syesha Mercado. Randy says “You sang it amazingly well.” Paula says Syesha looks lovely tonight.  She’s surprised by the song choice but says it doesn’t show Paula who Syesha Mercado is as an artist. Simon says Syesha Mercado might regret choosing “Fever ” because it was a “lame cabaret performance.” Post from: Christopher Hedges Syesha Mercado | Fever
David Archuleta | With You
2008-05-14 02:27:00
David Archuleta hits the American Idol stage singing Chris Brown’s “With You.” I’m going to go against conventional wisdom and say that while the young girls are going to love David Archuleta, this performance isn’t going to get high marks from the judges. I could be wrong, but it’s not doing anything for me. Randy says he likes the idea that David Archuleta took a chance in singing something younger, but it wasn’t David Archuleta’s song because it is disconcerting to hear David Archuleta sing about his “boo.” Paula like it as always. Simon says “It was a little like a chihuahua trying to be a tiger.”  It wasn’t David Archuleta. Post from: Christopher Hedges David Archuleta | With You

David Cook | The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
2008-05-14 02:22:00
Simon decides to give David Cook a challenge with Roberta Flack’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face .” David Cook is doing a great job.  My wife gives David Cook two thumbs up on his performance.  The crowd seems to enjoy it also — they break out into a loud ovation. Will David Cook be the next American Idol?  If he keeps it up, he’ll be the number one Idol. Randy says wouldn’t have picked something as predictable as “this older song” so that David Cook could have rocked. Paula says “That is one of my favorite songs and you’re my second favorite person who sings it.” Simon says it was one of David Cook’s best performances.  Simon likes that David Cook takes risks and is original. Syesha Mercado | If I Ain’t Got You
2008-05-14 02:17:00
Syesha Mercado is looking beautiful again on tonight’s Top Three show singing Alicia Keyes‘ “If I Ain’t Got You.” I want her to be in next week, so make sure to vote a couple of hundred times for Syesha Mercado.  You know you’d rather see her singing again, rather than one of the guys. Randy says he is happy Syesha is peaking at the right time. Paula says she is proud that Syesha Mercado is the last woman in the competition and says she is “absolutely stunning.” Simon says Syesha Mercado looks gorgeous and overall it was a good performance, although he questions Randy’s song choice. David Archuleta | And So It Goes
2008-05-14 02:09:00
David Archuleta sings Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes.” My wife likes the way David Archuleta sings, so it must be a good performance. Randy says David Archuleta is in the zone. Paula says it was a “pure and stunning performance.” Simon says “It was very good.  No surprises.  A bit predictable.” Post from: Christopher Hedges David Archuleta | And So It Goes

Going Green
2008-05-13 20:11:00
John McCain goes green saying that the US needs to do something about global warming and proposes “cap and trade” as a way of managing carbon dioxide emissions. Maybe it’s time to start up a micro carbon trading marketplace. Anyone want to give me some money to offset their environmental atrocities? We’re getting ready to put in some trees in the yard. If you want to feel better about yourself, feel free to buy a tree or two and I’ll plant them in my yard. I also have some environmental sanctuaries (empty lots filled with carbon consumption units i.e. trees). Want to offset some carbon? Feel free to chip in some money to help with the property taxes and you’ll get that great carbon offset feeling. Video: John McCain goes all Kyoto Protocol If we’re going to go green, maybe this is the way to do it — the BMW hydrogen luxury car. It’s a beautiful new technology that I’m hoping American car makers decide to adopt as well...

The Face That Launched SDSU Raids
2008-05-13 13:50:00
Jenny Poliakoff The overdose death of a beautiful college student — Jenny Poliakoff — led to the recent police raids at San Diego State University that uncovered a vast student run drug dealing ring based in fraternity houses. Students never thought they’d be caught operating on the college campus. They might have been justified in thinking that the confines of the university would give them protection from authorities. Law enforcement officials who infiltrated the college campus drug rings had to keep the university officials out of the loop because they feared that the administrators would try to derail the drug investigations, reports Newsweek. Reports Newsweek’s Jamie Reno and Dirk Johnson in Inside the San Diego State University Drug Bust: The raid, which included crackdowns on several fraternities, came a year to the day after the overdose death of Jenny Poliakoff, a 19-year-old student at San Diego State. It was the tragedy that triggered the underco...

Ride Bikes to Beat High Gas Prices
2008-05-13 02:06:00
I’ve been thinking about ways to save money on fuel costs. I’ve been trying to fill up with E85 as much as I can — I have a flex fuel van — but the savings might not be adding up as the difference between E85 and regular unleaded isn’t really that great and is less than 15% in this area because ethanol prices rise along with gasoline prices. Add the small price differential and the reduction in miles per gallon obtained from E85 and it might not really be the best choice. So, I’ve been thinking about the alternative to driving as summer approaches and the weather turns from rainy spring time to sunny summer — riding my bike to work if I don’t have to go anywhere away from the office. When I was young, riding my bike wouldn’t have been a problem. My brother and my friends rode anywhere and everywhere. Now, I live not too far from work — I’m about 5 miles or so away from my office — not too far away while ridin...

Las Vegas Suffers as Spending Drops
2008-05-12 14:03:00
Las Vegas is feeling the effects of the softening economy — people aren’t spending as much as they used to back in the days when everything was cheaper. But, when the economy is slow, if you have a little extra money, it might signal an opportunity to find some bargains. Sanya Richards Talks About Beijing 2008 Games

Keep an eye on Olympic gold medalist and 400-meter record holder Sanya Richards at the Beijing Games this August 2008 . Sanya Richards says she has more experience so she should run a lot better than she did in Athens — considering that she did well in 2004, if Sanya does what she says, she should be spectacular. Hillary Clinton’s Message Via SNL
2008-05-12 03:07:00
The local newspaper says the afterglow of the Indiana primary has already faded and the candidates running for the Democratic Party’s nomination for president have forgotten where Northwest Indiana is located. Since we’re all in withdrawal having become fly-over country once again and are missing the love of the Democratic presidential candidates who romanced us during a short whirlwind of a month only to leave in the middle of the night never to return or even call, here’s a video message from Hillary Clinton via Saturday Night Live to cheer you up on this dreary Mother’s Day. It makes me feel like she’s back in Lake County hanging out at the local pub enjoying a jalapeño pizza with a boilermaker. The Good Old Days Weren’t Necessarily Better
2008-05-10 22:02:00
While we’re thinking back to the good old days — it seems like we could be blasting back to the 1970s economically if we aren’t careful — lets take a ride back in time to see what it was like for people living in the 1950s when the world was dominated not by random violence perpetrated by individuals and shadowy cells bent on wiping out the infidels but by nation states armed with nuclear weapons ready to launch at a seconds’ notice. Despite all of the complaining we all like to do, we’re a lot better off today than we were even 20 years ago. The Credit Crisis Explained
2008-05-10 21:55:00
This American Life explains why the credit crunch happened on this week’s radio show. I listened to it this afternoon over the air and I’m glad I did.  It is well worth making a point to check it out when it becomes available as a MP3 next week.  Download it because it explains why we could be entering into a repeat of the 1970s — especially if American policy makers aren’t careful. The Giant Pool of Money explains why everyone who touches the credit industry — almost everyone in America — is feeling the pinch as banks have tightened their lending requirements after the rise and fall of easy mortgages. A Better Story John Grisham Couldn’t Write
2008-05-09 13:24:00
Does life imitate art or does art imitate life? A recent disciplinary case against an attorney in the state of Massachusetts involves facts that could have been ripped out of a John Grisham legal thriller. An attorney hoping to get information about a judge sets up a fake job interview with the judge’s law clerk, secretly records the “job interview”, then tries to blackmail the clerk into saying bad things about the judge. The clerk — wisely — goes to the FBI who busts the attorney. In The Matter of Gary C. Crossen, 880 N.E.2d 352 (Mass.2008), reads like a legal thriller. (Here’s another link to the Crossen case in case the first doesn’t work.) The facts of the case read like any great legal novel — except in this case they are true: On July 24, Reid made reservations for “Peter O’Hara” at the Four Seasons Hotel in Boston for an August 2 meeting with the law clerk. On August 1, Crossen, Curry, Donahue, Arthur T., Ru...

Nation Witnesses Lake Co. Style Election
2008-05-08 14:16:00
Doesn’t everyone living in Lake County feel proud that the whole country witnessed a Lake County, Indiana style election night on CNN and other national media outlets? After all, we voted year after year to keep the folks in place who are running our county government and they displayed their mad political and media skills not just for us, but for everyone watching and waiting for the vote results in Indiana. It all came down to absentee ballots and decisions to not release preliminary totals to the media. Absentee ballot counts in Lake County always raise suspicions given past election problems. The Northwest Indiana Times writes about the delays in releasing Lake County, Indiana’s vote totals: The nation watched Tuesday night as Lake County election officials held the fate of the Democratic presidential primary in their hands — and held it, and held it and held it. The delay provoked a broadside of allegations from national, state and local pundits of election t...

American Idol’s Top 3 | Syesha Mercado Is In!
2008-05-08 03:22:00
The Top 4 results show is on and the American Idol contestants have opened with their rendition of Steely Dan’s Reeling in the Years. David Archuleta is declared safe — there’s no surprise there since he probably got a significant portion of the 51 million votes that were cast last night — and is offered a safe seat on the couch. The AI “Fab 4″ — David Archuleta, David Cook, Syesha Mercado , and Jason Castro take a VIP trip on a private jet to visit Las Vegas’ Mirage hotel and attend the Cirque du Soleil — The Beatles Love Show. David Cook takes the stage to learn if he has made it through to the Top 3. We know he’ll make it through. And, Ryan Seacrest gives the official word — David Cook is in the American Idol Top 3. There’s a commercial for Ford Mustang with the American Idol contestants singing Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire. Syesha Mercado is looking extremely hot in her matador outfit. Video: Hottie ...
David Archuleta | Love Me Tender
2008-05-07 03:02:00
There’s no way that David Archuleta isn’t making it into the Top 3, especially singing Elvis’ “Love Me Tender .” He’s melting the hearts of young women all over America right now. Good song selection, David Archuleta . Randy says another great performance for David Archuleta — the hot vocals of the night. Paula felt David Archuleta’s heart in his performance. Video: David Archuleta sings Elvis’ “Love Me Tender.” Simon pays David Archuleta the ultimate compliment saying that he has crushed the competition tonight. I predict the Top 3 are David Archuleta, David Cook and I hope Syesha Mercado. Post from: Christopher Hedges David Archuleta | Love Me Tender
Jason Castro Throws The Competition

Jason Castro misses some words while singing Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man” and possibly throws the competition for Syesha Mercado. Thanks Jason. Video: Jason Castro sings “Mr. Tambourine Man” The judges don’t like Jason Castro’s performance — expect for Paula who loves everyone. We love you too, Paula. Bye, bye Jason. Syesha Mercado | A Change Is Gonna Come
2008-05-07 02:50:00
I do believe that Syesha Mercado has transformed right before our eyes. Syesha’s looking extremely hot and sounding great as she sings Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come.” Video: Syesha Mercado sings “A Change Is Gonna Come” Keep Syesha Mercado in for another week everyone who intends on voting in American Idol’s competition this week. Randy doesn’t love the song as much this week. He doesn’t like Syesha Mercado’s arrangement of the Sam Cooke classic. Paula says says “beautiful.” “You are magnificent.” Syesha’s crying now. Simon says that he agrees with Paula and says that he thinks that Randy got it wrong. You’ve got to love Syesha Mercado. David Cook | Baba O’Reily
2008-05-07 02:43:00
David Cook has got to be the coolest guy in the American Idol Top 4. He picks “Baba O’Reily” by The Who. I’m digging his song and fully predict that he’s going to be singing next week. Video: David Cook sings The Who’s “Baba O’Reily” I just hope sexy and beautiful Syesha Mercado is singing in the Top 3 as well. Vote for Syesha! David Cook’s getting into Baba O’Reily at the end of the song — I almost thought for a second David Cook might smash his guitar. That would have been a pretty cool Pete Townshend move. Randy says “That’s more like the David Cook I know there. … Just be you, but you were great.” Paula wants more David Cook. “Paula, Paula, Paula,” is all I have to say to her. Simon says “Welcome back David Cook.” Post from: Christopher Hedges David Cook | Baba O’Reily

David Archuleta | Stand By Me

David Achuleta is singing “Stand By Me.” Video: David Archuleta sings Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me.” I predict David Archuleta makes it through to the Top 3. The crowd goes wild for David Archuleta. I missed Randy’s and Paula’s reviews of David Archuleta’s performance because my older and young son started play wrestling right in front of me and the little one is yelling. But, I assume the gave good reviews of David Archuleta’s singing. Simon says David Archuleta could have whistled the song and he would have done well — good song selection and positioning. Simon says David Archuleta has the best performance of the night so far. Post from: Christopher Hedges David Archuleta | Stand By Me

Jason Castro | I Shot The Sheriff
2008-05-07 02:27:00
Jason Castro sings Bob Marley’s “I Shot The Sheriff .” Jason Castro is singing okay, but someone is going to have to go tonight so that we can see Syesha Mercado sing next week and we all know that David Cook and David Archueta are the vote getters. Video: Jason Castro sings “I Shot The Sheriff” Randy says it was a karaoke version of Bob Marley. Paula says she has never seen Jason Castro perform as well for the audience. However, Paula isn’t crazy about Jason Castro’s song selection tonight. Simon says “that was utterly atrocious. That is a song you do not touch. … That was a like a first round audition massacre. … I don’t know what you were thinking!” Maybe Jason Castro will keep Syesha Mercado safe for the Top 3. Syesha Mercado Syesha Mercado is looking hot — as always. Syesha is going to sing Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary .” Syesha Mercado’s looking sexy as she sways to the music. I’m hoping she makes it through to the Top 3 of American Idol along with David Cook. Video: Syesha Mercado sings Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary ” The crowd gives Syesha Mercado a huge round of applause. Randy says what a difference a couple of weeks makes. Paula says Syesha Mercado is a star. Simon apologizes for putting a damper on things and says Syesha’s song sounds like a bad impression of Tina Turner. American Idol voters — make sure to keep Syesha Mercado in for the Top 3 contest so that we have a beautiful woman to look at and listen to next week. 2008-05-07 02:06:00
David Cook is sounding good as he leads off American Idol tonight with Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like The Wolf .” Video: David Cook sings Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like The Wolf” Randy doesn’t get it, but Paula is salivating like a wolf at the thought of David Cook’s version. Doesn’t Paula Abdul always look like she’s hungry like the wolf? Simon thought the version was good but says that David Cook didn’t change it up like he has with other songs. Simon predicts David Cook will make it through this week’s episode of American Idol and into the Top 3. Post from: Christopher Hedges David Cook | Hungry Like The Wolf

Don’t Forget The Other Races
2008-05-06 03:29:00
All of the excitement and attention being paid to the race between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in Indiana could affect the outcomes of other important local races. The New York Times’ Monica Davey reports: For the first time since 1968, all eyes have turned to Indiana’s Democratic presidential primary on Tuesday. About 200,000 new voters have registered, and the presidential candidates seem to turn up on every corner. But eclipsed by all the excitement over The Race are the many others across the state: for county treasurers, coroners, surveyors, school board members, judges, state senators, members of Congress and, in Ms. Long Thompson’s case, governor. While the presidency is an important race, we must not forget that the outcomes of several local elections could determine whether Lake County ends up with an income tax or not.  Also, there is an election to decide who will be judge in County Division, Room Three. On Our Do Nothing Congress
2008-05-04 16:37:00
I wrote this as a reply to Steve Dalton’s comment on my post “Our Dysfunctional Politics Are Ruining Our Economy” and thought it would make a nifty post, instead of just a reply to a comment.  (Thanks to Steve for sparking this new post!) I’m all in favor of the Constitution’s system of checks and balances and the idea of incremental changes as a protection against tyranny. Having a do-nothing Congress and government is often more beneficial to the country as a whole than an activist government that is unified and ready to move quickly. However, I was thinking about how the Congress hasn’t done much lately — except maybe investigate baseball players for steroid usage. At times, doing nothing is a great thing. However, having a demagogic Congress that does nothing except blame business for political gain puts our country at a disadvantage in a world where a company could easily move its headquarters from the United States to London for more favorable tre...
