E85 For $2.99?
2008-05-26 02:59:00
Altfuelprices.com is showing Family Express is selling E85 for $2.99 / gallon.  My wife saw the Family Express price on Friday — after I had filled up for about 50 cents more at Meijer — otherwise I would have cruised over to Winfield to fill up before the start of the holiday weekend at this excellent price. If Family Express is still selling E85 for $2.99 at its Northwest Indiana stations, let me know.  They have E85 pumps in Valparaiso, WInfield, Portage and Hobart, so keep an eye out if you’re driving by one of their stations. Also, if Meijer and Gas City have lowered their E85 prices, let me know as well — and make sure to update the prices on AltFuelPrices.com. Post from: Christopher Hedges E85 For $2.99?
Google Adwords Offers TV Ads
2008-05-25 23:45:00
Thought television advertising was out of the reach of small business owners? Think again. Google is offering television advertising through its Adwords program — some of the ad rates seem relatively inexpensive. Need to advertise electronics? Spend $150 and you’ll get 820,000 impressions on 8 television networks, according to Google Adwords .  Not too bad.  There are many other demographics and categories available so that reaching a target audience is made easier. If you don’t have an ad, Adwords even has a program where they’ll reimburse some of the cost of producing a television ad. Simply log in to the Ad Creation Marketplace, select a specialist, and create an ad to use in your TV campaign. We’ll reimburse the cost of creating your ad through our Ad Creation Marketplace, up to $2,000. You’ll receive a credit in your Google TV Ads advertising account after it airs. You’ll need to drop about $8,000 — Google is requiring a minimum...

Stealth Layoffs Latest Trend
2008-05-25 04:26:00
We keep hearing the news about the economy being bad. For certain sectors, the news isn’t very good for certain professionals connected to the banking, housing and mortgage industries.  You know things aren’t good when the term “stealth layoff” starts coming into usage after regular layoffs have become part of the industry’s daily news. From the ABA Journal: One strategy is the stealth layoff, the columnist known as “The Snark” writes for the Daily Report in an article reprinted by the New York Lawyer. “With a stealth layoff, the firm doesn’t necessarily fire you,” Snark writes. “Rather, they essentially let you know that they plan to can you in the next three months-but as a ‘professional courtesy,’ they will give you a few months to find ‘other career alternatives.’ “ The columnist also details that the traditional method of culling the herd is still in play these days: Or law firms may e...

A Few Simple Requests
2008-05-25 03:11:00
The presidential campaign is going to be heating up as we get closer to the general election.  The presidential aspirants have already been gearing up for the election by moving away from the fringes so that they can attract more people in the center. A part of the presidential “strategery” is to make all sorts of promises to the voters. Here are a few examples: Voters in Ohio get all of the buckeyes they ever want.  People in Florida will get government sponsored shuffleboard games and free rides to bingo parlors.  Everyone in California gets a free soy latte on the taxpayers’ dime.  Everyone in the gun-totin’ and Bible thumping states get a free gun, NRA membership and Bible in the translation of their choice.  Things like that always seem to get people all excited that the man or woman in the White House will make an impact on their lives by giving out all sorts of “free” things. While the candidates are in the mood to give things away, h...

Hillary Owes IU $55K
2008-05-24 17:07:00
Photo by kmakice Hillary Clinton’s visit to Indiana University might mean that Indiana taxpayers are left paying for the Democratic presidential candidate’s visit to Bloomington if she decides to stiff the state-run institution. Hillary Clinton still owes IU about $55,000, reports WTHR in Indianapolis. Barack Obama also visited IU Bloomington, but he has already paid his bill. Reports WTHR’s Richard Essex: Indiana University says it may have to tap into reserve funds to cover a campaign visit by Hillary Clinton. The New York senator and Democratic presidential candidate owes IU $55,000 from a stop at Assembly Hall. Her opponent, Senator Barack Obama, held a similar rally there, but his campaign paid up their nearly $100,000 bill. Post from: Christopher Hedges Hillary Owes IU $55K
Back to 1979 — Crisis of Confidence
2008-05-23 04:30:00
Just in case we all forgot how fun it was back in the late 1970s, here is a trip back down memory lane back to July 15, 1979. Video: Crisis of Confidence Jimmy Carter’s “Crisis of Confidence” transcript from the Miller Center of Public Public Affairs Good evening. This is a special night for me. Exactly 3 years ago, on July 15, 1976, I accepted the nomination of my party to run for President of the United States. I promised you a President who is not isolated from the people, who feels your pain, and who shares your dreams and who draws his strength and his wisdom from you. During the past 3 years I’ve spoken to you on many occasions about national concerns, the energy crisis, reorganizing the Government, our Nation’s economy, and issues of war and especially peace. But over those years the subjects of the speeches, the talks, and the press conferences have become increasingly narrow, focused more and more on what the isolated world of Washington think...

Hillary Clinton For Supreme Court?
2008-05-23 01:12:00
How does Supreme Court justice Hillary Clinton sound? James Andrew Miller writes in the Washington Post that Barack Obama should select Hillary Clinton to be a Supreme Court justice, if he is elected in November. But there is another way to foster party unity without forcing a political marriage. It’s likely that the next president will face at least one Supreme Court vacancy. Obama should promise Hillary Clinton, now, that if he wins in November, the vacancy will be hers, making her first on a list of one. Paying off Hillary Clinton for getting out of the way could put her into a position of power over American life for decades to come. Personally, I don’t see Barack Obama nominating Hillary Clinton to the Supreme Court just to get her to stop her tireless campaign. But, this has been a never-say-never year where anything can happen. Post from: Christopher Hedges Hillary Clinton For Supreme Court?
Bicycle Jets — Top Speed in 7 Seconds
2008-05-22 19:44:00
Want to ride your bike, but need to get someplace quicker than pedal power can? Why not fire up your bike jet? Why ride at 10-15 MPH when you can cruise along on your bicycle at 75 MPH? Pure insanity — but it looks like a lot of fun. Video: Bob Maddox’s pulse jet bike Wired’s Chuck Squatriglia writes about jet biker Bob Maddox’s creations in a Wired.com report: The thought of bolting a jet engine to an old Schwinn cruiser came to him about six months ago when “I wanted to throw the engine onto something that would get me around.” The bike engines provide 50 pounds of thrust. They weigh 13 pounds apiece, but Maddox says you hardly notice it when you’re on the bike. Get it going, though, and things get interesting. “It accelerates pretty quickly,” he says. “It’ll hit top speed in about 7 seconds. But even at high speed, it feels very stable. You’re just being pushed along on a column of air.” While pulse ...

Are E85 Prices Fixed Artificially High?
2008-05-19 01:20:00
Has anyone else wondered why E85 prices always seem to track the price of regular unleaded gasoline? I’ve noticed that there aren’t that many good deals for E85 — unlike in other states (and we’re in a major corn growing state) — our E85 prices are consistently staying a certain number of cents below the price of regular unleaded. One blogger suggests that E85 dealers could be making a significant profit by marking up E85 a lot more than what it really costs them to purchase. I don’t know enough to know if this calculation is right, but it would be interesting to keep an eye on the Chicago Board of Trade ethanol figures and what is being charged at the pump. From Non-FFV Running E85: In response to my post regarding E85 price fixing, one anonymous person shed more light on the price to produce and transfer E85, in order to better determine if gas stations are price gouging on E85. Here is the new equation: (Current Ethanol Price - $0.51 Blender ...

Northwest Indiana’s blogging community keeps on developing and one of the signs of progress in the blogging world is the addition of a review blog focusing on Northwest Indiana places and things. NWIReviews provides a much needed service for Northwest Indiana — a perfect niche blog because I don’t think there are any other bloggers out there providing similar services at this time in this area. It’s an excellent idea and the perfect time to develop! Go check it out (and not because I’m mentioned in a post or two) because it is your duty to go out and support fellow NWI bloggers and blogging in general. Remembering SSG Chad Caldwell
2008-05-16 04:00:00
It’s easy to forget that our troops are still overseas in Iraq. We get caught up in daily trivia and routine problems. The high cost of gas or job stress can keep us from remembering the greater world. We should always take time to say a prayer for our troops overseas, as well as one for our political leaders as well as our enemies, as Jesus would want us to do. A video by photojournalists who were embedded with Staff Sgt. Chad Caldwell’s unit shows them recalling their time with him in Mosul, Iraq. Other included videos show segments featuring SSG Caldwell serving his nation along with others in his unit. SSG Chad Caldwell was killed April 30 in Mosul, Iraq — just a few weeks before he was scheduled to come home. My prayers are with his family. Video: Photojournalists remember Staff Sgt. Radical Bikers Take Over Freeway
2008-05-15 17:00:00
The Crimanimalz take over a LA Freeway during a recent commute. Reports Chuck Squatriglia for Wired in “Radical Cyclists Take To LA Freeways To Say Bikes Are Better“: For the second time in two months, a bunch of Los Angeles bike advocates calling themselves Crimanimalz took to one of the busiest freeways in the world to make the case that, when your freeways are gridlocked, bikes are better. About 30 cyclists rode onto the Santa Monica Freeway (I-10) at the height of Friday’s rush-hour commute and went east to the San Diego Freeway (I-405), where they rode north to the Santa Monica Boulevard exit, moving easily through traffic. In all, they rode more than two miles. “There’s thousands of cars and you’re just flying by,” said one of the group, called RichToTheIE, by phone on Wednesday. “It’s an amazing feeling.” I’m planning to ride my bike to work to get into better shape and to save on some energy expenses, but I d...
Save The Polar Bears
2008-05-15 16:01:00
The United States moves to list polar bears on the endangered species list saying that they are in danger of extinction. Without getting into the politics of the situation, there is something fun about polar bears. I wonder if it is because of the Coke commercials that play during Christmas time showing polar bears enjoying a soft drink while playing in the snow? I remember seeing a documentary about a town in Canada where polar bears roam freely. While polar bears are beautiful creatures, one must always remember that they are dangerous animals, as well. The town had bars over every window and an alert system to let people know if polar bears were getting ready to over run the village in search of food. The video clips that come with the news stories announcing the addition of polar bears to the endangered species list show the majesty of the polar bears. There’s something that we always appreciate in animals that are powerful, yet also beautiful. Video: Polar Bears to be...

Syesha Mercado Is Out

Nationwide E85 / Alt Fuel Reporting
2008-05-15 03:43:00
AltFuel Prices.com needs you to report alternative fuel prices. Looking for a way to keep track of alternative fuel prices in the area and across the nation?  Want to help others find the lowest prices for E85 and other alternatives to regular unleaded?  Don’t want to drive out to the local filling station and wonder if another nearby outlet has a better price on alternative fuels? Altfuelprices.com lets users of E85 and other alternative fuels — such as LPG, hydrogen and CNG — report prices in their area as a service to users of alternative and flex fuel vehicles. If you drive by an E85 or other alternative fuel outlet, take a moment to note the price and report it to the forum so that you can help others find the lowest prices for alternative fuels. Writes the creator of AltFuelPrices: AltFuelPrices.com was originally started as CNGPrices.com when I purchased a CNG powered vehicle. There were plenty of sites out there that would tell you how much it costs to buy...
Mitch’s Endorsement of Costas Big NWI News
2008-05-14 21:55:00
The news that Jon Costas is getting Indiana governor Mitch Daniels’ endorsement in the attorney general’s race is huge news for Northwest Indiana. Here’s the announcement letter that was sent out to Indiana Republican Committee members (via Hoosier Access): May 11, 2008 State Committee Members, With the primary election behind us, I wanted to write to you regarding the upcoming 2008 Indiana Republican State Convention where we will nominate our candidates for Lt. Governor, Superintendent of Public Instruction and Attorney General. I once again look forward to running and continue serving with our Lt. Governor Becky Skillman. Becky is a trusted and valued partner in our administration. She has done as much as any Hoosier to put Indiana back on track. It is simply not possible to believe we would have accomplished as much as we have these last three and a half years without Becky as our legislative quarterback. As you know Dr. Suellen Reed has chosen not to seek re-e...

Laywers Using Twitter
2008-05-14 14:15:00
I have to admit that I haven’t had much experience with Twitter . The extent of my knowledge of Twitter is that I know that prolific blogger Steve Dalton uses Twitter as a part of his blogging efforts, including his Hoosiers for McCain blog. The latest trend to watch for is lawyers using Twitter. Law Firm Web Strategy’s Steve Matthews writes about how lawyers (and others) can use Twitter to gain a professional edge. Have you heard of Twitter yet? Perhaps not. And hopefully not, as this post is intended to explain one of the latest web-tools on our collective horizon. What you should know is this: Politicians in the current US election are levering it, news outlets like CNN & Canada’s CBC are offering headlines that can be mixed into your reading stream, and companies like Southwest airlines are using it to interact with customers & take feedback. It’s widely considered the fastest growing tool of web influence, and will at some point have a trickle down effec...

Hybrids Aren’t Cost Effective?
2008-05-14 13:32:00
With gasoline prices entering the $4 per gallon price point in Northwest Indiana with the alternative fuel E85 racing to catch up and keep within 10% or so of the regular unleaded price point, is it the time to run out and buy a hybrid car? With the higher cost for a hybrid, some suggest that they might not be an economical choice because it could take many years of driving the car before recapturing the high sticker price paid. Car buyers might be better off just buying a less expensive but high mileage gasoline vehicle. Video: Are Hybrids Cost Effective ? The calculation that it will take 300 years to gain an advantage by driving a hybrid Lexus as compared to its regular gasoline model shows that hybrid technology and pricing at this time won’t make a difference. David Cook | I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing
2008-05-14 03:01:00
David Cook seals his ticket into the American Idol finals with Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing .” David Cook sang last, he has violins playing in the backgroud, has the smoky voice and is going to get a lot of votes because he’s kicking it into higher rock gear toward the end of the song. Paula is giving David Cook a standing ovation. Randy says he loved the song, but it was just okay.  Very predictable. Paula says “See ya in the finals.  That’s what I predict.” Simon says “One of the great songs of all time.  … David Cook wins the night.” Post from: Christopher Hedges David Cook | I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing

Syesha Mercado gets great song to showcase her talent in Gia Ferrell’s “Hit Me Up.” Will Syesha Mercado win over the hearts of the American Idol voters enough so that they keep her on for another week? Randy says he can see Syesha Mercado sing a song like that.  It was just okay, Randy says. Paula points out that the song is from “Happy Feet.”  “You did the song very well. … I don’t know if it is the type of song that defines you as an artist.”  Paula isn’t sure if she’s going to make it into the finals. Simon says that Syesha Mercado had her best moment last week with her Sam Cooke song. Post from: Christopher Hedges Syesha Mercado | Hit Me Up
David Archuleta | Longer
2008-05-14 02:47:00
David Archuleta is singing Dan Fogelberg’s “Longer” and I’m flashing back to the 1970s because he’s doing a good job bringing back the memories of the good old days of when I was in elementary school and most music was listened to on the hi-fi using vinyl records. The crowd is going crazy for David Archuleta. Randy says “You could sing the phone book … hot, hot, hot.” Paula says “very lovely.” Simon says he thinks David Archuleta sang that song very well but says the song is too “gooey” and “something you choose for a 90-year-old.”  But, Simon predicts David Archuleta will make it to the finals. David Cook is back to his rock roots with Switchfoot’s “Dare You To Move .” I’m thinking David Cook will end up being number one on American Idol. Randy says great song choice. “It wasn’t you best tonight. It was a little pitchy.” Paula says “I feel like you just got to the beginning when you got to the end of the song.” Simon says it was pretty much what he would have expected. It was okay. While I want Syesha Mercado to stay, I think the guys have an advantage, especially David Cook because he is cooler than David Archuleta. Post from: Christopher Hedges David Cook | Dare You To Move
