Illiana Expressway Awakes After A Short Hiatus

Feds Don’t Know How Much E85 They’re Using
2008-06-23 01:05:00 The Federal Government doesn’t know how much E85 it is using in its flex-fuel vehicles, reports the Federal Times. Government credit cards don’t always properly record E85 purchases. “We can’t tell for the bulk of these vehicles which fuels we’re purchasing,” said Marc McConahy, owner of Vista Consultants, who studied the problem for two years for the Energy Department. Why does the Herald Times Online cling to subscription model?
2008-06-22 08:37:00 Does anyone know why the Bloomington Herald Times Online is still password protected? It’s not like news is going to be kept locked inside the city limits of Bloomington. Maybe the thousands of Hoosiers fans willing to pay for access keep the subscription model worthwhile despite the fact that it keeps many people out of the Herald Times Online website? Why not move beyond the confines of the limited subscriber base and open up the newspaper to the world? More web traffic would mean higher advertising rates for online advertising and expanding readership beyond just Monroe County, Indiana. More web traffic usually translates into higher revenue! Is the Herald Times Online the last newspaper in America locked away behind a subscriber-only iron curtain? The New York Times opened its doors in an effort to increase advertising revenue. And, there was some talk about the Wall Street Journal doing the same — although most of the news and opinion is freely available on ... More About: Model
Kim Kardashian - fame by association
2008-06-21 10:13:00 Video: Kim Kardashian buys paparazzi a playset AskMen.com writes that Kim Kardashian came to be famous “by association” — she’s the daughter of one of O.J. Simpson’s “dream team” attorneys, the late Robert Kardashian. Like anyone who gains their fame by association, it is easy to assume they have nothing going on except keeping up with their social calendar and spending money at the trendiest nightspots. I have to admit that I enjoy watching Kim Kardashian and her family on Keeping Up With The Kardashians — if I’m hanging around the house, I’ll check On Demand to see if there’s a new episode. While the show is focused on Kim Kardashian, her sisters and her mom, the added bonus is seeing how Bruce Jenner is handling life with his family. Keeping Up With The Kardashians has done a good job at showing Kim Kardashian in a positive light. It would be easy to view Kim Kardashian as a one-dimensional character who just fl... I didn’t realize Esther Ku was controversial
2008-06-20 07:35:00 Esther Ku I got caught up in the moment when watching Last Comic Standing and didn’t realize that comedian Esther Ku was so controversial. I was persuaded to root for cutie Esther Ku after seeing her move up in the competition to Las Vegas. There was a scene of Esther Ku bouncing up and down on her hotel room bed that showed her to be energetic and fun. Plus, she’s from Chicago — I’m a sucker when it comes to anyone local who has a shot at making it big. (Northwest Indiana is just an extension of Chicago when it comes down to it). After writing a pro- Esther Ku post, I discover there’s a bunch of anti- Esther Ku blog posts: Blogger Angry Asian Man writes that Esther Ku’s comedy is stereotypical and self-hating. Not only is her act painfully unfunny, it’s completely reliant on the same old tired Asian stereotypes. And I’m not talking about taking on the stereotypes with a creative, subversive spin—it’s just the same old tired... More About: Controversial , Esther

Fun in Fort Wayne: Old No. 3 Firehouse Cafe
2008-06-06 04:55:00 I was in Fort Wayne today for a convention and was looking for a place to grab a bite to eat. I’ve been to the Dash In and Loaf N Ladle on Calhoun before — both great places — but I was looking for someplace new and local that I hadn’t tried on a visit to downtown Fort Wayne. Luckily for me, right across the street from the Grand Wayne Convention Center on Washington Boulevard is the Old No. 3 Firehouse Cafe located right above the Fort Wayne Firefighters’ Museum. I entered the museum and let the staff member on duty know I was looking for the Old No. 3 Firehouse Cafe. I took the steps up to the second floor where the cafe is located and took a seat right next to the old fashioned pole that the firefighters used to slide down to their equipment from their upstairs quarters. The hole was covered with wood and there was a trunk of dalmatians keeping watch over the area so that nobody would pretend like he or she was a fireman and take a slide down the p...

A Deadly Year For Tornadoes Predicted
2008-06-03 17:00:00 Tornadoes have already killed 100 people this year. It’s severe weather season and it’s always good to be alert to tornadoes and other deadly weather events that can strike anywhere tornadoes can form. This year could be a deadly year for tornadoes with already 100 people killed by the violent storms, according to CBS 4 Denver. There have already been 1200 tornadoes this year, reports the AP. The fearsome nature of tornadoes has been caught on tape many times this year. A recent tornado ripping through a bank was caught by security cameras. Watching the video shows the devastating power of tornadoes and underscores the need to always seek shelter when tornado warnings and watches are issued. Nobody wants to be caught in the deadly winds of a tornado while it is ripping through a house or business. Gina Gershon and Bill Clinton?
2008-06-03 13:42:00 Bill Clinton lashed out at a Vanity Fair reporter yesterday after the magazine published an article detailing concerns about the former president’s behavior since leaving the White House. Here’s an example from Todd S. Purdum’s report that has gotten Bill Clinton so steamed — an unsourced rumor that Bill Clinton has been friendly with Gina Gershon and other women: Over the last few years, aides have winced at repeated tabloid reports about Clinton’s episodic friendship and occasional dinners out with Belinda Stronach, a twice-divorced billionaire auto-parts heiress and member of the Canadian Parliament 20 years his junior, or at more recent high-end Hollywood dinner-party gossip that Clinton has been seen visiting with the actress Gina Gershon in California. There has been talk of a female friend in Chappaqua, a woman in a bar at a meeting of the Aspen Institute, and a public sighting of Clinton, Bing, and a ravishing entourage in a New York elevator th... Hillary’s Supporters & Thoughts On KY
2008-06-03 06:04:00 Nick Wallace at the Sample Gates finds a news video showing Hillary Clinton supporters in Kentucky saying that they can’t vote for Barack Obama. While I still believe you can’t judge the quality of a candidate by the opinions of her supporters, Senator Clinton’s supporters are certainly a group of Americans we don’t often consider in this age of technology and education. It’s sometimes easy for me to forget that there are people out there who would not vote for someone based on race — the point comes through even though Hillary’s supporters are smart enough to not say it out loud. They say they’ll vote for Hillary Clinton, but will never vote for Barack Obama. It doesn’t make sense to me. While we have problems in Northwest Indiana, it’s nothing compared to what it is like further south in the poverty stricken areas of eastern Kentucky and other places that time and economic prosperity has left behind. Many of my relatives live in Ke... More About: Thoughts , Supporters
Exciting Times in Indy: Paulista Attacks and AG Fights?
2008-06-02 20:09:00 Will there be a Ron Paul revolt in Indianapolis today? Who will win the battle to be the GOP’s nominee for attorney general this fall? Hoosier bloggers are about what’s happening at the GOP convention this afternoon. Hoosier Access’ Mike Jezierski is keeping an eye on things at the state GOP convention in Indianapolis. And, local Northwest Indiana bloggers Steve Dalton from Porter County Politics and Dan O’Day from Prayeramedic are also on the convention floor keeping an eye on the action. Hoosier Access has had a lot of pro Greg Zoeller posts and Steve Dalton’s Porter County Politics has been in favor of Jon Costas — the blogosphere is providing balance in the marketplace for ideas. Read both sides, get all the information you need, and make your decisions. Isn’t it great that the blogosphere works without a requirement for a “fairness doctrine” or other limits on free speech. Be Careful Where You Put Twitter In Your Template
2008-06-02 14:36:00 I’ve noticed that Twitter isn’t loading quickly — it’s probably because the system has been bogged down with too many people trying to up with the A-listers who have thousands of followers and those people who are following hundreds of thousands of fellow twitterers. I’ve also noticed that items sent via Tweetburner this morning aren’t showing up in my sidebar. Watch for the service to improve as Twitter’s creators add in more capacity to handle all of the traffic that is slamming the growing service. However, while Twitter’s leaders are working on technical solutions, keep an eye out for what Twitter might be doing to your blog’s loading time. After noticing that my pages were hanging while waiting for Twitter to load, I moved my Twitter widget from the first column sidebar to the third column sidebar. I also moved anything that was critical above Twitter so that if it doesn’t load, most content on the page will display... More About: Template , Careful
Indiana AG Race Heats Up
2008-06-01 19:53:00 The race between Jon Costas and Greg Zoeller heats up as state GOP convention delegates prepare to make their selection for November’s general election. It’s a race that has been focused largely inside of the party — I don’t think I’ve heard anyone outside of the Indiana blogosphere discuss who should be the GOP’s choice for their candidate for attorney general. Local blogger Steve Dalton is heading downstate to attend the state convention — he might do some live blogging as well as Tweeting from Indy tomorrow. Writes Steve Dalton about the Costas vs. Zoeller battle for the nomination to be the GOP’s attorney general candidate: Two experienced candidates face off on Monday for the Republican nomination for Attorney General in Indiana. I’m sure most delegates have made up their minds, now we wait until Monday afternoon to hear the vote totals. I’ll try to live blog tomorrow afternoon. Costas brings basically statewide endo... Phoenix Lander Tweets From Mars
2008-05-31 17:26:00 Spotting the power of Twitter to keep people up-to-date in a concise format, scientists at NASA have programmed the Phoenix Mars lander to send Tweets with updates from the red planet. The New York Times’ Kenneth Chang writes about the Phoenix Mars lander using Tweeter: Whoever thought a NASA spacecraft could be so adept at social networking and Web 2.0? For users of Twitter, a Web microblogging service, the Phoenix Mars lander has been sending pithy news “tweets” to the cellphones and computers of interested “followers.” Excellent use for this new technology. Thoughts on Liberalism
2008-05-30 14:13:00 This was originally a reply to a comment by Kevin Tracy to an earlier post about the new Professorship of Conservative Thought at the University of Colorado Boulder, but I didn’t want it to get lost in the comments, so I’ll share it here. I assume that most liberals are liberal for all of the right reasons. They are seeking justice, equality, freedom and a better life. Unfortunately, liberalism can’t provide this if the lessons from history are to be remembered. I probably wouldn’t be somewhat conservative today if I hadn’t been exposed to liberal thinking in college. (I’m never “full-on anything” because nothing in life is perfect). Some of the attractiveness of liberalism to youth comes from being uncertain about ones future. The thought of a “safety net” is always a great thing when the future is uncertain and when someone is just starting off on their journey through life. The same is true during tough economic ti... Professor of Conservative Thought
2008-05-30 01:31:00 Jacob Levin over at The Sample Gates writes about a new professorship at the University of Colorado Boulder — a “professor of conservative thought.” Having heard this, any jokes I could make about UC Boulder suddenly seem inadequate. So great is the political bent on their campus that they are thinking about hiring a Professor of Conservative Thought . This is not someone in perhaps their Economics or political science department who teaches a subject and is in fact conservative, but rather someone whose job it is to think conservatively. It will be very important for the professor of conservative thought to be granted immunity from the various university speech codes and other academic restraints designed to limit thought and debate since it is likely that every weapon available in the arsenal to silence dissent will be used against this professor. While conservatism on campus is a rare thing, students can still learn to be conservative by virtue of exposure to the...

According to Indiana State Police Cpl. Chad Woody, a passsenger car collided with a semitrailer at 4:31 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the Borman Expressway just east of Cline Avenue. Chicago Area E-85 Overpriced?
2008-05-29 09:00:00 An E-85 gas pump in Northwest Indiana. A local news station investigates high E-85 prices in the Chicago area. CBS 2 News Chicago reports that motorists filling up with E-85 in the Chicago area might not be saving much money because stations are charging so much for the alternative fuel that it doesn’t make economic sense to use. Reports CBS’ Mike Flannery in “Ethanol is cleaner than gas, but is it cheaper?“: Ethanol producers collect billions of dollars in subsidies from American taxpayers each year, promising in exchange a home-grown, cleaner and cheaper fuel. CBS 2 Political Editor Mike Flannery, though, finds that promise to be false, at least here in the Chicago area. In Wednesday night’s Truth in Politics, he reports on prices in the city and suburbs that cheat consumers who buy E-85 ethanol fuel. I have to commend Family Express for charging $2.99 / gallon for E-85 over the Memorial Day weekend since it saves consumers money while still letting ... More About: Area
Chitika Offers CPM Graphic Ads
2008-05-28 21:18:00 I received an email from Chitika that makes me excited: We have seen that on some sites, CPM Graphic ads (which pay you for impressions) perform much better than CPC ads (which pay you for clicks). Based on your current account activity, and the recent merchant-side smart pricing on CPC’s, we believe that you will generate more revenue by using these CPM Graphic ads. Starting tomorrow, we are incorporating these new CPM Graphic ads into your eMiniMalls, MPUs, and RPUs, and we will be showing these CPM ads when we cannot use our new behavioral targeting to show Chitika|Premium ads. The results of our new behavioral targeting have been fantastic, with many publishers seeing huge jumps in eCPM. I’ve noticed a difference in my Chitika earnings since I added the premium ads — they only display when Chitika determines someone might be inclined to click on the ads — as opposed to the classic mini-mall units which I haven’t been displaying because they weren&... Denise Richards Isn’t That Complicated
2008-05-27 10:00:00 I watched Denise Richards ‘ new E! show — It’s Complicated — last night. Denise Richards wants us to know that she’s just a woman from Illinois who keeps a bunch of dogs and three pigs in her house — all while living with her dad and talking about how she loves getting hooked up with the bad boys of Hollywood and the recording industry. Remember that Denise Richards was married to Charlie Sheen — just in case we forgot about that Hollywood bad boy, there was a scene in It’s Complicated with our protagonist in the courthouse trying to get the clerks to change the court order to allow her to change her name because it evidently wasn’t included in the original dissolution order. The clerks told Denise Richards that she’d have to go see the judge about getting her name changed. Of course she was mad that it wasn’t going to happen that second. I almost wish that I hadn’t watched Denise Richards‘ new show bec...

It’ll be nice to keep the blog somewhat updated via the Twitter widget when I’m on the “dark side of the moon” and away from an internet connection. Why Do They Run From The Police?

It makes one wonder why people even try to flee when all it does is cause them more problems than if they would have just yielded to police at the beginning of the traffic stop. Never flee from the police — especially in South Carolina where dash board videos show police cars slamming into chase subjects during pursuits.
