2009-02-01 16:30:00
31. Januar ? 10.
Hysteria: Past yet present
2009-02-01 15:56:00
Hysteria: Past yet presentFebruary 5 ? April 9, 2009Hysteria is an elusive, psychosomatic, even mythical disorder, impinging on our physical, cultural, and moral concerns. It is often characterized as a mercurial state of disturbance that can be manifested in both a psychological and physical sense. The word ?hysteria? comes from the Greek work hystera, a term applied to disturbances of the uterus. Addressing this topic, a number of contemporary artists have dealt directly with the work of European medical professionals Sigmund Freud and Jean-Martin Charcot by creating artwork that mirrors aspects of their studies. This exhibition will explore hysteria in relation to gender construction, feminine identity and pathologization, and sheer physical form given to the condition in the imagination of artists.Works by: Cortney Andrews, Beth B, Zoe Beloff, Mary Billyou, Tammy Rae Carland, Jennifer Dudley, Carson fox, Guerilla Girls, Lynne Heller, Ruth Hutchinson, Georgette Maniatis, Jenni...

Exhibits from Macao, China?.Art works to be featured in the 53rd Venice Biennale exhibition shall be themed on the subject of ?Divergence?. The concept ?Divergence? embodies diversity, controversial characteristics and self-contradiction. The world in which we find ourselves is complicated, diversified, compressed as well as expanded, from which all sorts of propositions emerge and influence our daily lives without our knowledge, such as those to do with free markets, globalisation, environmental protection, development, science, and marginalisation, among others, which we encounter everyday. After The Net
2009-01-31 20:42:00
After The Net is a deliberately ambiguous title: implying that somehow the Net is over in terms of its utopian promises and also making a reference to the documentary film The Net by Lutz Dammbeck (2003). Like the film, the exhibition explores systems of technological control and presents works that draw attention to historical shifts of network power: from cybernetics to free and open source software, and in turn to social networking platforms.Featuring: Caen Botto (Universomente), Wayne Clements, Geoff Cox (project.arnolfini), Lutz Dammbeck, Jeff Gompertz, Rui Guerra, Linda Hilfling, Chun Lee, Aymeric Mansoux, Marloes de Valk (GOTO10), José Antonio Orts. The exhibition also includes openKURATOR, an online platform developed by KURATOR for Observatori 2008, presenting a selection of works from an open call by: Burak Arikan, Bestiario, Carlos Katastrofsky, Abe Linkoln, Jimpunk, Mrtamale, Joseph Nechvatal, Cyril de Vroom & Jos Wabek. Futurismo a Milano
2009-01-31 13:12:00

Bill Viola
2009-01-31 12:48:00
Haunch of Venison Berlin will this winter present a series of works from the internationally renowned US artist Bill Viola , in his first solo exhibition in Berlin in six years. The exhibition includes the large-scale video/sound installation 'The Messenger' (1996) originally commissioned for Durham Cathedral by the Chaplaincy to the Arts and Recreation, North East England. It depicts the continual rising and sinking of a male figure as he slowly journeys between a blue-black underwater realm and the bright daylight of the world above its surface.New works will also be presented from the 'Transfigurations' series - a cyclical progression of images that describe a series of encounters at the intersection between life and death. The first in this series was the three channel installation 'Ocean Without a Shore' (2007) created for the 52nd Venice Biennale. In Berlin the works shown will be single and multiple channel pieces, with one piece, 'Small Saints' (2008), using six tiny O...

Nothere
2009-01-30 22:18:00
White Cube Mason?s Yard is pleased to present a new exhibition of works by Polish artist Miroslaw Balka. For this exhibition Balka will present two large-scale sculptural works and two video works that deal with recent Polish history, and in particular, with notions of displacement, journeys and memory. The title for the exhibition, Nothere, is purposefully enigmatic and can offer up several possible readings ? both ?no there? or, equally, ?not here? ? suggesting a sense of emptiness and isolation.White Cube

LA CONNOTAZIONE DEL FERRO
2009-01-30 21:43:00
Tutte rigorosamente in ferro. Intesa ch...

Strike a Pose
2009-01-30 21:07:00
Strike a Pose 30 January ? 28 February 2009Stephen Friedman Gallery is pleased to present ?Strike a Pose? ? a group exhibition of emerging and established international artists. A diverse selection of two and three dimensional works, both figurative and abstract, explores the physical, psychological and conceptual implications of the ?pose?.The exhibition asks us to consider questions of identity, performance, artifice, appropriation and intent. The formal concerns explored by these artists such as figuration, gesture, abstract assertions and physical interconnections, encourage an awareness of the body in time and space. Classical modes of representation as well as more complex propositions reveal the pose as an ambiguous, self-conscious form.Bringing together a playful and inquisitive selection of work, the exhibition offers an opportunity to consider the implications of the 'pose' across formal and conceptual territory.Participating artists include: Colby Bird, Gillian Carnegie...
