?School?s out for summer?
2008-06-06 14:12:00
In 1972, Alice Cooper effectively captured emotions shared by many American children as the public school schedule gives way to the freedom of summer. Decades later, it still serves as a sort of anthem for students looking forward to summer plans. In fact, while looking for the lyrics, I had to sift through ...

WebMD comments on homeschooling
2008-06-05 18:06:00
According to the brief bio at the top, Dr. Steven Parker “shares information and advice on how to keep your children happy and healthy all year round.” Apparently that includes stricter oversight over homeschooling. In response to the court decision in California, Dr. Parker writes: I think we all can agree that teaching is ...

What? No Principled Discovery?
2008-06-05 16:41:00
A peek at what took out our internet connection last night. Maybe we should invest in some sandbags. Marcy’s Musings and Tammy of Just Enough and Nothing More both found some positive articles about homeschooling. And I’m working on a post and should hopefully have that up in a little bit….Scratch that.  Here it is:  WebMD ...

Public opinion of homeschooling slipping?
2008-06-04 08:38:00
HarrisInteractive released the results of its May 2008 survey of over 2000 adults regarding the status of American education on Monday. Public schools, it seems, are not doing well in the eye of the public. Public schools fall to the bottom of the list when it comes to the quality of ...

Should homeschooling be illegal?
2008-06-03 09:55:00
Sunday’s Parade Magazine included a brief article on homeschooling to accompany their normal celebrity and general entertainment fare. In good homeschooling fashion, it has already made the rounds in forums and blogs, with all 16 blogs technorati shows commenting on it in favor of the homeschoolers. A few thoughts of my own. First, the ...

Economic woes and homeschooling
2008-06-02 07:55:00
Way back when gas hit $2.00 per gallon and some farsighted fools began predicting three, I remember hearing a story on the radio about why the rising prices had not seemed to effect the economy any. Mr. Guest Expert answered that the rise still fell into what most Americans considered their discretionary spending. ...

Homeschooling without credentials leads to educational anarchy
2008-05-31 16:38:00
It isn’t just that we’re “well meaning amateurs.” The National Education Association (well, at least the California Chapter) has real concerns about what homeschooling will do to the entire educational system. As reported by the Pacific Justice Institute, the organization representing Sunland Christian School: For instance, the California Teachers Association claims in its brief ...

Subway Protesters: Please call off the dogs
2008-05-30 06:43:00
Apparently, emotions run high over sandwich shops and their contests. After Subway issued their apology, I thought the matter would be dropped. But I guess the apology wasn’t quite good enough. In my email box sits a message, instructing me to cut, paste and edit it for use with my local Subway ...

College and the homeschool advantage
2008-05-29 08:27:00
The two most popular items to have made their rounds while my blog was moving servers seem to be the Subway boycott and Dr. Laura?s entry about homeschoolers and socialization. Most of the commentary I?ve seen regarding Dr. Laura?s entry, however, has included only a link with little discussion. So I thought I?d share ...

The Great Subway Contest Crisis of 2008
2008-05-28 08:30:00
While most Americans were enjoying barbecues and the Hanley family was watching 70 mph winds blow a stream of water up the hill in front of our house, homeschoolers were busy organizing a boycott against Subway and possibly even Scholastic. My email box had more messages related to the boycott than spam, and the ...

My site really is working now!
2008-05-28 00:17:00
And it is good to be back.  Today’s problem was a simple one.  Just as I gave up, I switched the permalink structure to the default and suddenly the site worked.  It continued to work when I switched it back. No clue why, but that is of little consequence.  I am happy. Hello, world!

Site (almost) back
2008-05-27 07:01:00
Well, my site is up after over 24 hours of being down.  Sort of.  It doesn’t recognize the urls of specific posts, but I’m hoping that will just take care of itself through the night. It is nice to see my actual content after it being blank all day. I am (mostly) moved to a new server, ...

Identity and power in the homeschool ?movement?
2008-05-23 08:36:00
Thanks to JJRoss and a post I’m planning for next week, I have been chasing down some more thoughts regarding whether or not homeschoolers are ready to be accepted. It seems that the concern is coming down to one of identity and power. Tammy originally asked: Is mainstreaming and bringing homeschooling into the public consciousness as ...

A clean house is a sign of?
2008-05-22 19:47:00
I picked this up from Po Moyemu: My father gave me a button a few years back that said “A clean house is a sign of a wasted life.” He knows I am not a great housekeeper. So I was just thinking to myself, after reading this post from the Carnival of Homeschooling, what else ...

Homeschool graduate running for CT legislature
2008-05-22 05:15:00
And that graduate would be none other than Judy Aron’s son, David. David Aron doesn?t let the stats get in his way. Such as he?s one of about 4,000 registered Republicans in Hamden versus about 14,000 Democrats. Such as he just moved to town about 18 months ago and is not very well known. Such as ...

Are homeschoolers ready to be ?normal??
2008-05-21 08:27:00
After reading an update on re Rachel L which stated that the amicus brief filed jointly by California’s three homeschool organizations had been accepted, I poked around Just Enough and Nothing More’s site a bit, knowing she would have more information.  I have avoided most of the news recently about the case in California because ...

Moving servers this weekend
2008-05-20 15:04:00
Currently, Principled Discovery is sharing a server with a number of other fine blogs, but we have appeared to outgrown our shared home.  So a few of us will be moving. At the moment, it looks like I’ll be moving this weekend, so the site will be down for several hours.  In the meantime, please be ...

Announcing a new homeschool talk show
2008-05-19 09:10:00
Coming soon… In July, I shall be beginning a new venture which I am looking forward to with great anticipation…and a good deal of fear and trepidation as well. I have been invited by a sort of network of conservative bloggers to host a talk show. Kind of like Rush or Larry King, except ...

A message to the parents of future graduates
2008-05-18 16:17:00
Well, it is graduation season again as evidenced by the messages on balloons sold at the mall.  And the number of calls to graduates to appreciate their education and strive to bigger and better things.  I wanted to share some thoughts, too, but this is perhaps directed more at parents, particularly those with children who ...

The Education Industrial Complex
2008-05-16 10:56:00
Paul Peterson, director of Harvard?s Program on Education Policy and Governance, seems to have a coined a new descriptive term for American education although the concept will not be unfamiliar to those who have read John Taylor Gatto: the education industrial complex. Before the education-industrial complex was erected, America led the world in its commitment ...

Marketing our youth
2008-05-15 08:07:00
I am really not sure what to think about this story other than “What is this world coming to?” And is there anyway to slow it down? Russh Australia, a lifestyle and fashion magazine, hired Zippora Seven for a provocative 18-page editorial fashion spread alongside 16-year-old male model Levi Clarke. news.com.au Seven also is but ...

Comment Feed Question
2008-05-14 17:59:00
I spent entirely too much time this past week trying to figure this out. But those of you who subscribe to my comment feed may have noticed that it is empty. My comments, on the other hand, are not. I cannot figure out what is going on. I’ve tried everything I ...

Promoting positive discussion
2008-05-13 00:51:00
I knew the day would finally come when I would feel the need to develop a comment policy.  Perhaps rather than being frustrated that common sense cannot be expected to prevail among intelligent adults, I should look at it as a blogging milestone.   Since I strive to maintain my blog as a place where all ...

Connecting on the internet via social bookmarking
2008-05-10 07:23:00
I must admit that I don’t quite get social bookmarking. I think it is because I have never really invested enough time in any one of the services out there to really see what it can do. At one time or another, I have signed up for a variety of social bookmarking sites ...

Structure and learning in the homeschool environment
2008-05-09 09:26:00
I have been thinking a lot about this recently as I prepare to include my son in more formal learning. My daughter thrives on being given as much independence as possible. My son thrives on structure. I am trying to find some sense of balance, a happy medium. Then I found ...

Heart of the Matter is posted/Homeschool analogies
2008-05-08 17:48:00
The May edition of the Heart of the Matter is posted!  And you can take some time to read my article for this month on Common Misuses of Analogy in Homeschool Criticism: When reading essays and opinions criticizing homeschooling, it does not take very long to be confronted by a number of analogies. Begging, er, requesting your support
2008-05-08 05:30:00
So, yeah. I’m asking for money. Except that we won’t actually ever see or touch any of it. It all just goes directly to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, a private organization supporting research and education dedicated to helping those suffering from Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis to lead healthier, fuller ...

Mom signed my diploma and?
2008-05-07 08:44:00
Addressing homeschool stereotypes tends to be about as effective as explaining to a child why the sky isn’t really blue.  It is a matter of perception rather than fact, and our own perceptions about the world rarely allow themselves to be challenged by anything as annoying as actual reality.  I understand this is parody.  And ...
